Stodgy beginning but well worth perservering

Lorna Byrne's narrative style has a guileless quality that can be difficult to adjust to. The first half of the book focuses heavily on events of her childhood and early adulthood and her tendency to describe actions in detail can make it a bit heavy going (I rang my Da. He said Hello. I said Hello.) However, it is exactly this same simple narrative style that makes her descriptions of her interactions with angels so beautiful and haunting. Hers is a story of courage, faith, perseverance and inspiration. Well worth the listen and it will stay with you afterwards.

What did you like best about this story?

I am widely read regarding historical, scholastic, metaphysical and theological and scientific spirituality, and I dislike religion per se so am not prone to take things on faith and have never read things about angels (at least that wasn't scholastic). But this book has done more to fill me with faith and a personal sense of relationship with the invisible than anything I've ever read. I know that what Byrne writes is true, for her descriptions of angels parallels descriptions of plant devas (energies that help plants to grow) and a host of things too large to discuss here so I can't

Would you consider the audio edition of Angels in My Hair to be better than the print version?

I never read the print version, but I really enjoyed listening to the Audio version and I would highly recommend this to anyone. It kept my attention and the Narrator has a very relaxing and soothing voice. I thought it was great.

A touching story

It's a good thing the reader had such an engaging voice and Irish lilt. It carries the listener over some very slow spots where experiences are recounted in painful detail. Overall the story is a wonderful one and left me feeling very inspired. It does take a bit of patience to get through some of the spots though.

Engrossing book of one's person's account

I really enjoyed the book, it was told from Lorna's point of view and began right from when she was a child.

Just Plain FUNNYYYY!!!!!!!!!

I loved this audiobook! Just plain funny really! Chelsea Handler is comical. She is easily one of those comics of this generation that honestly just knows how to deliver a joke and deliver it well. The pace of the book itself never really died down and she kept landing joke and joke in a nice sequence. I really don't have much more to say about this book was just plain funny!

One notch below My Horizontal Life

I gave her first book 4 stars - it was really a fun listen.

This one gets lower marks because it's just not quite as funny. The stories drag just a little, in places. And you can't help but feel a little sad about a few of them.

Also, I preferred the other narrator to Chelsea herself, who narrates this. But one is no better than the other - I just liked the other girl's style.

Other than those minor things - this book was pretty enjoyable.

Hilarious!!

Anyone who knows Chelsea's comedy will be in stitches listening to this book. I made the mistake of listening while working out at the gym. Numerous times I busted out laughing forgetting not everyone was listening to "Are you there vodka" on my headphones with me. The rest of the time I had to pretend I had an illness that made me laugh out loud every 10 minutes. It was hard to keep up this charade and workout at the same time, but the book was worth the awkward glares and stares.

I laughed til it hurt

Had to be sure to listen to this one alone...not suitable for little ears. I laughed out loud all alone which doesn't happen often.

Loved It!

This was my very first audio book. I got it to give myself something to do while I sit out and get some sun. It made my sunbathing really entertaining. I'm not one to LOL much, but I did it a lot listening to the stories.

I would say that maybe some low reviews came from listening to the first chapter, which wasn't nearly as good as the rest. So if you get this audio book, and you're bored at first, just go to chapter 2.

I recommend this book for women. I don't think it's going to interest the men.

Painful Journey

I read David Sheffs book Beautiful Boy about living through his sons Meth addiction and throughout the read, I realized that it would be great to read the sons perspective, so I picked up a copy of Tweak by Nic Sheff.

Beautiful Boy was an incredible raw book of a parents journey through a childs addiction, but I wasnt at all prepared for the mental picture that accompanied the writings of the Nic Sheff. There is a raw, sort of, unedited perspective that is written with the mindset that the end result will be death, not life.

Tweak picks up about half way through Nics meth addiction after he finds himself cut off from his parents financially, turning tricks to make ends meet so that he can score his next round of blow. He talks about doing drugs that range from marijuana to meth (his drug of choice) to heroine. Not only does he have an addiction to drugs, he also has an addiction to alcohol and sex. This book is written from the perspective of an early 20-something that seems to only care about his needs.

Much like Beautiful Boy, he highlights parts of his life that uses a day format. He talks about his stints in sobriety, some lasting as long as 18 months before the pull and allure of the drugs drag him deeper and deeper into his addiction. He lies, cheats, steals and leaves one of his girlfriends at a market for four hours while he goes to steal something from his mothers house and then subsequently collapses in her garage.

The vividness of his account is extraordinary. When he goes into a building to score more drugs, you can feel the emotions he felt your heart rate increases when uncertainty surrounds. This book is much more raw and unfiltering of his experiences then Beautiful Boy. This book takes you deep inside his thoughts, his actions, the words that flow from his mouth in a series of explictives. His candor in sharing these experiences is inviting, but you should be prepared for the experience.

Drugs - the most frustrating issue in our society

I read this after I read Nic's father's book Beautiful Boy by David Scheff. This book was a good accounting, from an addict's perspective of life as an addict. At times I wanted to reach through my headphones and strangle this young author and just yell STOP! Don't do that to your family. Having read his father's account of the agony the family went through and then to read the account of the relative lack of agony the addict went through (sorry, my perspective as a parent) totally by choice was very frustrating.

Schizophrenia Inside Out

This amazing memoir is an insider's fly-on-the-wall look at what it means to suffer from an alienating and incurable, progressive mental illness. Granted, the protagonist has access to plenty of resources, and thus is a very high-functioning individual with plenty of status and privilege. Not many schizophrenics are as lucky. Still, she somehow remains on her feet, white-knuckling it throughout all her breakdowns and especially through the wall of denial that so often accompanies this disease.

The book makes a highly cogent case for seeking and maintaining medication as well as talk therapy in order to carry on a productive independent life.

I read this book twice!

A Memoir of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenics are supposed to live in a world of their own, unable to function in society or to be understood. Not only does the author overcome her handicap and become a successful law professor, she reveals the inner workings of her mind and the demons that haunted her. Most likely this memoir was only made possible by reason of the enhanced drugs now used to control this horrible malady. In any event, I found the book fascinating from beginning to end.

As a mental health professional, I really appreciate the authors depth of knowledge and ability to communicate insights beyond the research and clinical references.

Strength, courage & hope

The author is a brilliant scholar who has schizophrenia. This account of her life gives an appreciation of how difficult it is to live with this illness, yet also an understanding that it is a mistake to underestimate what a person with this illness might accomplish. Also, I was left thinking that doctors do not always know what is best. Or even moderately good. I was unaware of the huge differences in the treatment of the mentally ill between Britain and the United States. The use of force and involuntary treatment are much more common in the US. Thank you Elyn for fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves, and for sharing your story with us!

Incredible

One of the best books I've read on mental illness. This woman is remarkable and has preformed a great service by articulating so well what happens internally, as well as how horribly our hospitals do in helping people.

Like a train wreck you can't turn away

This book tells the tale of a FLDS woman who lives her life in the polygamist sect located in Colorado City and thankfully escapes to a better life with her children. You may know this group from the recent news concerning the arrest and conviction of their leader, Warren Jeffs. Carolyn's story leads you from one harrowing, distasteful, unbeliveable tale (which are true!) that you can not stop listening to. I listened to this non stop - so much so that it drove my family crazy b/c I had my headphones on constantly. Not since the book The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls has a book based on reality made me cringe, angry and proud of the author/victim of the story. Worthwhile read and a lot of background to so many of those news reports we've all seen in the last year or so.

Questions answered - candid and informative.

If you are at all curious about the polygamist lifestyle - at least the most extremely negative version of it - then this book will answer your questions. The matter-of-fact delivery of the narrator seems to fit well with the stoic style of writer - I could see how an overly emotional rendition might have worn on my patience after awhile. However, I have to say that it could've been several hours shorter without losing much of the story, and at least some emotion would have been nice. I sympathize greatly with the plight of this woman and the tough choices she had to make to survive - she is a true survivor and someone to be admired for her courage and willingness to share her story.

Incredible Story of Guts and Grit

This is the story of a woman born into a fundamentalist cult. Her story of abuse and oppression is told with meticulous detail and stunning revelation. And the courage, perseverance and just sheer mettle that leaving the cult required was well documented. It's easy to say, "just leave" but for this woman, with eight children and limited resources, one child with serious medical issues, facing two impossible alternatives must have been daunting. Especially the entry into the civilized world as we know it, coming from such a sheltered and controlled environment.

Excellent... But tongue in cheek

You should be warned that this book is a cross between a documentary and a comedy... he does some pretty outlandish stuff. I would compare it to the "Super Size Me" movie, where there is a very real and relevant theme, but it is taken to the extreme for entertainment value.

This story was funny, endearing and had no problem keeping my interest. I felt the author/narrator is extremely well-spoken (compared to the other audio books I have heard). The story had a good flow... although I felt the ending was slightly weak. I could relate to his and his wife's feelings and difficulties throughout.

If you are looking for a very serious look at religion in contemporary society, this may not quite hit what you are looking for. If you are looking for an entertaining story about a secular guy who tries to learn about and incorporate select parts of the old testament into his life (often to the chagrin of his wife) and relate to its teachings, you'll like it. And if you are somebody like me who grew up secular and has tried to become more religious, you will definitely be able to relate.

Some of the other reviewers complained about it not containing enough on Christianity. The book is focused only on the old testament (this is stated in the books online summary), and the author is jewish, so much more weight is definately given to the jewish view of old testament laws. He does have some christian advisors and devotes some, but not a majority, of time to christian perspectives and values...

Refreshing!

What a great book! I began reading this book for educational purposes and wasn't expecting to be entertained. The humor is exceptional, but also gives insight on real life childhood differences. I listen to audio books in the car & must have looked pretty funny laughing so hard while driving alone! It's one of the best books I've read in a very long time!

Interesting autobiography; not autism-informative

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The author does not have any training in science, psychology, or logic; which is not a crime in itself, but he constantly uses "I'm autistic, so therefore I cannot help but think logically!" to explain away some very illogical lines of thought and fabricated narratives. As an autistic scientist myself, this drove me up the wall.

He comes up with a lot of mighty tempting narratives that sound pretty plausible, and states them as facts and logic (think: bad evolutionary psychology papers). Nobody is born with a solid grasp on logic or science, not even autistic people (although they might have a leg-up on the competition). This is why there is extensive coursework and schooling for these subjects.

I would have much preferred that the author frame this story as an interesting autobiography of somebody with a very weird and interesting life who happened to be autistic.

David Bellavia's memoir "House to House" describes the intense fighting and the sacifices made by our forces in Iraq in raw detail. If you are looking for a first-hand account of what is really going on in Iraq then this is the book you should download. David, thank you for your service to our country.

Wow, Best of this type!

Where does House to House rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Very near the top. Story is just amazing and author brings you along so well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of House to House?

when author fights by himself in the house near the end of the book. Also when he recounts his interactioins with his son it just tore me apart. Reminded me of my son and having to leave him and his mother when I travel.

Have not listened to one of his other performances but this was truely stellar.

You bet....but I forced myself to break it into little pieces to make it last.

I was thinking this would be similar to many other similar books I read but I was absolutely floored by the emotion, and the feeling that pours forth from this book. Only regret is not purchasing sooner. You will judge other books of this type by this book from now on.

This book gives a brilliant insight of what it was like to be in the US Army, in Iraq, post Saddam. The author is very funny, honest and doesn't spare the listener from any of the horrors of war. This is a book you must get.

excellent writing, story and narration

I think this is a great book. I've read or listened to many books about the wars in Iraq (including another that focused on Fallujah) and AFG. and think this is one of the best. Although I like almost all of the other books, this one really gives a sense of what the weeks, days and hours for Staff Sgt. Bellavia and his unit were like (unrelentingly brutal).

Great story

I enjoyed this book. It does a great job in reminding everyone just how strong the human spirit is and how able we are to cope with overwhelming emotional trauma brought on by another human being.

I loved it. the narrator did a great job and the book is a great book.

Incredible, Powerful, Heart wrenching

The first book was tough. It had a lot of moments that watered my eyes. But this book, just as heart wrenching but provided more of a perspective from the child's point of view regarding how it felt after he got out of his horrible situation. Sadly, I found myself relating to his feelings (though my circumstances were not as extreme at home but about the same at school)...none the less very inspirational and looking forward to the third book!

Freedom is Worth the Struggle

Ronald Reagan details the struggle of those who would take our Freedom away and those who intrust it to us. We must struggle to remain Free. Reagan believed in people, unlike those who tie us up with laws and regulations. Listen to him and follow his example.

entertaining

A good autobiography read by President Reagan, this brings back memories of this great and personable leader. I smiled and laughed and got misty during this brief look back at the Great Communicator.

Restored my hope that American can again be great!

Would you listen to An American Life again? Why?

I will likely listen to this one over and over when I need a need a renewed sense of hope and optimism.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ronald Reagan was much more of a true American patriot than what history gives him credit. I've recently studied several of the great leaders and presidents of our country and strongly believe that he would be listed among our Founding Fathers if he were born a hundred years earlier. Unfortunately, it's rare to find a history book or class in American History that accurately depicts the significant accomplishments of Ronald Reagan. From taking our economy out of the brink of failure and creating one of the longest and most properous times in our history, to restoring respect for our nation's military and making its men and women proud to wear a uniform, he loved his country and believed it's people were the reason for its greatness.

What about Ronald Reagans performance did you like?

It was great to hear about Ronald Reagan's life in his own words. Many of the stories he relayed were spoken with great humility and transparency. However, if you're interested in hearing the details of his accomplishments, I'd recommend one of the other books written by his closest advisors and friends, because he downplayed many of the historical events, including winning the 'Cold War.' But spoken clearly in this book was his proudest accomplishment from his eight years in office - his economic policies that transformed our nation.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

It's hard to pick a favorite portion of the book. Ronald Reagan seemed to have two things that today's Presidents rarely display together - Optimism and Servant Leadership.
