    Title: Wasted
    Author: Marya Hornbacher
    Narrator: Marya Hornbacher
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-16-99
    Publisher: Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 435 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Marya's story gathers intensity with each passing year. By the time she is in college and working for a wire news service in Washington D.C., she is in the grip of a bout of anorexia so horrifying that it will forever put to rest the romance of wasting away. Down to 52 pounds and counting, Marya becomes a battlefield: her powerful death instinct at war with the will to live.
Why would a talented young girl go through the looking glass and slip into a netherworld where up is down, food is greed, and death is honor? Why enter into a love affair with hunger, drugs, sex, and death? Marya Hornbacher sustained both anorexia and bulimia through 5 lengthy hospitalizations, endless therapy, the loss of family, friends, jobs, and ultimately, any sense of what it means to be "normal." In this vivid, emotionally wrenching memoir, she recreates the experience and illuminates the tangle of personal, family, and cultural causes underlying eating disorders.

    abridged memoir
I love this book, so I jumped at the chance to hear the author read it. I do wish it was unabridged, however, as there are some really good, key parts that are missing--things I really wanted to hear her say.
    Glamorless...
In Wasted, Marya Hornbachers battle with her body is nothing short of epic, but unlike a true epic it is far from heroic. Hornbacher is the unlikely antagonist in her own life story, hating her body to the very brink of death. Wasted captures every dramatic, painful and often repulsive detail. If you can bear to look at it, you will glimpse in raw form the gruesome reality of eating disorders. There is no glamor here. There is hunger, vomit, blood and bones.
This abridged version of Wasted, read by Hornbacher herself, is so seamless that I did not even realize it was abridged until I discovered this fact in another listeners review. Hornbacher is the perfect narrator. No other reader could get this story so right.
If you are hoping for a happy ending, Hornbacher advises you to look elsewhere. She denies the existence of a happy ending to her story, claiming that the best one can hope for in the end is simply letting go.
But here is a secret many years have passed since this book was written. During those years Hornbacher continued to struggle with her eating disorder, and she came face to face with a terrible mental illness that left her grasping for sanity and hope (see Madness: A Bipolar Life). In the end, she managed to do better than just let go. She conquered and overcame. And, lucky for the rest of us, she lived to write about it.
Quick read, hard to put down
If you're like me and you find mental illness fascinating this is a really well written first person account of what it's like to struggle with Anorexia Nervosa. It's interesting to see how an eating disorder begins and spirals out of control.
I saw a documentary with this author recently where she stated that she was young when she wrote this book and it triggered her eating disorder. Perhaps that is why there are many people who consider this entire book a trigger and have mixed emotions about it. I'd be interested to read her take on the events now, many years later, as recovered as anyone could be.
    Awesome
I've read this book atleast 3 times. The book itself is written to not keep any part of bulimia or anorexia hidden. It explains all and every feeling imagined and felt.

    Title: 'Tis
    Author: Frank McCourt
    Narrator: Frank McCourt
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-12-99
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1524 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The same vulnerable but invincible spirit that captured our hearts in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes comes of age in 'Tis.
Listen as Frank tells in his own inimitable voice his story of how at the age of 19 he traveled from Limerick to New York in pursuit of the American dream. Despite the abundance of unsolicited advice he gets to "join the cops" and "stick to his own kind", Frank knows that he should educate himself and somehow rise above his circumstances.
And though he left school at 14, he talks his way into New York University, falls in love with the quintessential Yankee, long-legged and blond, and tries to live his dream. But it is not until he starts to teach - and to write - that Frank finds his place in the world. And for those of us who are lucky enough to come across his writings - and captivating readings - 'Tis a wonderful thing that he did.

    A second delightful helping
This is the continuation of the autobiography begun in ANGELA'S ASHES, watching the author return to America, navigating through his late adolescence and early adulthood.
Although every bit as delightfully drawn as the first volume, the voice changes into just what one might expect from a boy loose, on his own in New York City, drinking, whoring, surviving a stint in the military, and struggling to find a comfortable place teaching in the NYC public school system.
Be prepared for the change in tone from the one McCourt used in Angela's Ashes. He's raising himself now, from the street up, and his language is peppered with all the color (what my parents would call unnecesary cursing) you might expect from most any young lad his age. If you listen carefully, though, you'll hear the same sensitive heart beating in the story, again masterfully read by McCourt.
    Marvelous
I've been a books on tape junkie for a decade but this is my first review.
I like reading customer reviews and just wanted to say that this story totally rocks. I haven't laughed out loud this much with an audio book in years. He's a excellent story teller.
    'Tis one of my favorites
'Tis is the final chapter of a story begun with Angela's Ashes. In this book Frank McCourt, like many of us, struggled with much of the banality of life. This seemed so more evident in 'Tis than in Angela's Ashes. 'Tis lacks the vivid imagery, the depths of pathos and the unmitigated joy and anticipation of childhood dreams unfulfilled. But McCourt's lilting Irish voice is still there adding to 'Tis that same quality of intimacy and authenticity. By much of 'Tis, McCourt has overcome the real impediments in his life. It doesn't matter that not as much happens in 'Tis. He has made it back to America, after all. (In how many cases do our adult lives measure up to our childhood fantacies, anyway?) 'Tis is the needed punctuation to complete his story. McCourt's often inability to know what to do is only obvious to us because we are viewing from the outside with the benefit of his 20/20 hindsight.

    Title: Braving It
Subtitle: A Father, a Daughter, and an Unforgettable Journey into the Alaskan Wild
    Author: James Campbell
    Narrator: Roger Wayne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-30-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 93 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, home to only a handful of people, is a harsh and lonely place. So when James Campbell's cousin Heimo Korth asked him to spend a summer building a cabin in the rugged Interior, Campbell hesitated about inviting his 15-year-old daughter, Aidan, to join him. Would she be able to withstand clouds of mosquitoes, the threat of grizzlies, bathing in an ice-cold river, and hours of grueling labor peeling and hauling logs?
But once there, Aidan embraced the wild. She even agreed to return a few months later to help the Korths work their traplines and hunt for caribou and moose. Despite windchills of 50 degrees below zero, father and daughter ventured out daily to track, hunt, and trap.
Campbell knew that in traditional Eskimo cultures, some daughters earned a rite of passage usually reserved for young men. So he decided to take Aidan back to Alaska one final time before she left home. It would be their third and most ambitious trip. The journey would test them, and their relationship, in one of the planet's most remote places: a land of wolves, musk oxen, Dall sheep, golden eagles, and polar bears.
    Critic Reviews:
"Campbell expertly blends facts on the flora, fauna, and general life in the Alaskan bush with his reflections on being middle-aged, with many adventurous years behind him, as opposed to his daughter, whose quest for adventure has only just begun. Informative, humorous, and full of a love of nature." (

Very well written. Kept me engaged. A must read for those enamored by the Alaskan Wild. It takes you there.
    Must read
If you have a daughter this is a must read. A lot of situations in the book I could relate to. Very very good book I look forward to his daughters books.
    Loved it.
awesome story that keeps you wanting more. I listened to it twice. the narrator does a wonderful job.
    :)
Loved it! Fantastic adventure. I enjoyed living vicariously through them. I recommend it. Time to plan my next trip...
    impressive trips!
Wonderful story and the reader was easy to listen to. Only frustrating part was the mispronounciation of some of the words - Lodi is actually pronounced with a long I, not Lodee; slough is slew and I know the bird merganser as being pronounced with an emphasis on the second syllable. Just some Wisconsin oddities - at least he didn't have to pronounce Wausau or Chequamegon!

    Publisher's Summary:
A rare and fascinating portrait of the American presidency from the number-one New York Times best-selling author of Mrs. Kennedy and Me and Five Days in November.
Secret Service agent Clint Hill brings history intimately and vividly to life as he reflects on his 17 years protecting the most powerful office in the nation. Hill walked alongside Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, and Gerald R. Ford, seeing them through a long, tumultuous era - the Cold War; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy; the Vietnam War; Watergate; and the resignations of Spiro Agnew and Richard M. Nixon.
Some of his stunning, never-before-revealed anecdotes include:
With a unique insider's perspective, Hill sheds new light on the characters and personalities of these five presidents, revealing their humanity in the face of grave decisions.
    Members Reviews:
    Narration flawed by mispronunciation.
As one who was glued to the television during the Watergate hearings, I was distracted from the story by the narrator who didn't bother to find out the correct pronunciation of the names of people and places.
    Fascinating Journey
As a book that traces the history of the major political events of my lifetime, I found this to be a fascinating journal of one secret service agent's extraordinary eyewitness account of what went on to protect the president of the United States from the 1950's through the 1970's. For me it humanized each of the presidents and have me an even higher regard for the men and women whose jobs it is to protect our nation's leaders, even at the risk of their lives.
    True American Hero
With the previous excellent books by Clint Hill and Lisa McCubbin detailing his experiences with JFK it is interesting to hear about his service with the other presidents, as well as a more in depth look at his life after the Secret Service. The only negative is George Newbern's sometimes bland reading and occasional mispronunciations, though that does not diminish the impact of this true American hero's story.
A real drag of a book that should have been terrific
What an opportunity! Serving five of the most vivid Presidents in recent history. Watching them up close and personally.
Clint Hill, loyal and ever mum about anything interesting or new, writes like a Danny do-good fifth grader. The book is narrated by a voice that sounds right out of a high school public speaking class.
Hill's choice of travelogue adjectives on a 15 country tour with Ike is so cliche ridden I had stop the narration. You could go to sleep bored to tears by these squeaky clean, tell-nothing pair! What a shame. A chance of a lifetime drowned in cliches!
    Interesting, but....
There were some very interesting insights into the various presidents. And some rather entertaining/spellbinding incidents that occurred.

    Publisher's Summary:
A stunning look at World War II from the other side.... From the turret of a German tank, Colonel Hans von Luck commanded Rommel's 7th and then 21st Panzer Division. El Alamein, Kasserine Pass, Poland, Belgium, Normandy on D-Day, the disastrous Russian front - von Luck fought there with some of the best soldiers in the world. German soldiers. Awarded the German Cross in Gold and the Knight's Cross, von Luck writes as an officer and a gentleman. Told with the vivid detail of an impassioned eyewitness, his rare and moving memoir has become a classic in the literature of World War II, a first-person chronicle of the glory - and the inevitable tragedy - of a superb soldier fighting Hitler's war.
    Members Reviews:
A compelling look into WW2 from the "other" side
This is not a book I would have normally found on my own. But, a good friend recommended it and I am most grateful that he did. It is a recollection of World War II that everyone should read.
These are the memoirs of Colonel Hans von Luck and in it he shares his experiences of his life as an officer in the German army leading up to and through World War II. It also gives his account of the five years he spent after the war in a Soviet POW camp and his eventual return to life as a civilian.
This book is not a glorification or romanticization of war. It is not a defense of Hitler's Germany, nor an apology. It is an explanation of how men who were patriots of their country had that loyalty twisted and abused in Hitler's quest for world domination. It is a view "from the trenches" and gives great insight into both the details of the battles von Luck fought in, and the thoughts and feelings of him and his men through the various stages of the war.
While I did find the narrative bog down from time to time with the details of movements during some of the campaigns, what really makes this book a standout are von Luck's insights into how the German army viewed the war as well as the descriptions of encounters that he had with his enemies both as captor and prisoner. von Luck also brings into this collection additional stories from his companions who got separated from him over the course of the war - of people he befriended in Paris during the time Germany initially occupied it, of subordinates captured by the Americans in North Africa and the time they spent in POW camps in the American Midwest, of the woman who was for a time his fiance before his capture and five year internment.
In war, governments seek to make their citizens see the enemy as something not human. von Luck makes nots of the Nazi propaganda machines efforts to make the German citizens see the Soviets as "sub-humans" at the time that Hitler broke his non-agression pact with Stalin and started the disastrous invasion of the Russian homeland. This book shows that all of these peoples - Russians, Germans, French, Brits, even the Americans - weren't just "others" but were men doing their best to follow the orders of the civilian leaders under difficult circumstances.

    Publisher's Summary:
A beautiful, raw, and compassionate memoir about identity, love, and understanding.
The son of a Baptist pastor and deeply embedded in church life in small-town Arkansas, as a young man Garrard Conley was terrified and conflicted about his sexuality. When Garrard was a 19-year-old college student, he was outed to his parents and was forced to make a life-changing decision: either agree to attend a church-supported conversion therapy program that promised to "cure" him of homosexuality or risk losing family, friends, and the god he had prayed to every day of his life. Through an institutionalized twelve-step program heavy on Bible study, he was supposed to emerge heterosexual, ex-gay, cleansed of impure urges and stronger in his faith in God for his brush with sin. Instead, even when faced with a harrowing and brutal journey, Garrard found the strength and understanding to break out in search of his true self and forgiveness.
By confronting his buried past and the burden of a life lived in shadow, Garrard traces the complex relationships among family, faith, and community. At times heartbreaking, at times triumphant, this memoir is a testament to love that survives despite all odds.
    Members Reviews:
    Powerful memoir
This is a beautifully written memoir, powerfully moving, and ably narrated,. Conley's coming of age account has significance for anyone, regardless of sexual orientation. It is about the journey into adulthood, the struggle with religious authority that is based in fear and and rejection, but the quiet and ongoing "victory" that is possible even if painful.
    Finally!
a genuine review of ex gay brainwashing. Thank you for writing this. I can't wait for the film.
    amazing.
    Powerful and Important
This is such an important story and a testament to why we need to ban "conversion" therapy. Some parts will be hard to listen to, but power through because this memoir is a must read/listen.

    Publisher's Summary:
Citizen Soldiers opens on June 7, 1944, on the Normandy beaches, and ends on May 7, 1945. From the high command on down to the enlisted men, Stephen E. Ambrose draws on hundreds of interviews and oral histories from men on both sides who were there. He recreates the experiences of the individuals who fought the battles, the women who served, and the Germans who fought against us.
Ambrose reveals the learning process of a great army: how to cross rivers, how to fight in snow or hedgerows, how to fight in cities, how to coordinate air and ground campaigns, how to fight in winter and on the defensive, how citizens become soldiers in the best army in the world.
A masterful biography of the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations, Citizen Soldiers provides a compelling account of the extraordinary stories of ordinary men in their fight for democracy.
    Critic Reviews:
"Citizen Soldiers [is] a high point in Ambrose's long fascination with the nature of leaders and followers. (John Lehman, The Wall Street Journal)
"History boldly told and elegantly written.... Gripping." (Kyle Smith, People)
"Ambrose proves once again he is a masterful historian.... Spellbinding.... The book captures the bizarre contradictions, random kindness and unexpectedly comic moments of the push to Berlin as memorably as a great war novel." (John Omicinski, Detroit Free Press)
    Members Reviews:
    Required reading, excellent narration
This book conveys the tragedy of war for all. As a combat vet of Iraq I feel that my tour was a walk in the park compared to WWII. All citizens should read this book to help them understand the price that was paid to defeat the nazis.
The narrator also does an excellent job, his various accents help the flow of the book and his delivery, tempo, and tone were perfect.
I Read it Before and Hearing it is Even Better
Would you listen to Citizen Soldiers again? Why?
This is a great telling of WWII from the soldiers perspective. I read it some years ago and hearing it again I learned some new things I had forgotten. Stephen Ambrose has a way of telling a story that bring the words of history to life.
Who was your favorite character and why?
His story telling keeps the listener listening. It's like watching a movie in your head.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wish I could listen to this in one sitting.
    Any additional comments?
Listening to this makes me proud to be an American. Proud of our history and thankful of our past. Some may say our current generation couldn't do the same. Many have said the same of previous generations before. Gertrude Stein called the WWII generation, "The lost generation".
I'm sure history will repeat itself if the current generation is ever called on to defend freedom on a massive scale. It will succeed and we will prevail.
    What a great book.
Only Ambrose Writes So Specifically and So Broad
First, I only gave this book an overall rating of 4 Stars because, although so thorough and wonderful, it doesn't compare to Band of Brothers. I know it's not supposed to be like Band of Brothers, but I can't help but compare the two.

    Loved it!
This book really took me by surprise. I just couldn't stop listening once I started. The anecdotal stories are really fascinating and a little bit comical, but the absolute best part about Nothing Is True and Everything is Possible is that it's non fiction!
I found this book to be superbly written. It flows at the perfect pace and is by no means an information overload. There are a lot of facts, but at the same time there are a lot of stories about different situations with a colorful array of characters. Antony Ferguson's reading is outstanding. It feels like the author is telling you his story, rather than it being a separate person. I would give the performance more than 5 stars if I could!
I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Russia, and for those that love well written and entertaining non-fiction.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher- thank you!
A fascinating read about media in Putin's Russia
A really interesting look at how the Russian central authority has adapted control of the media since the fall of Soviet Russia. It is an important cautionary tale for Western democracies trying to grapple with the rise of authoritarianism, a loss of faith in mainstream journalism and an epidemic of fake news.
    Fascinating and Eye-Opening
What did you love best about Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible?
The book gave me insight on Russia I never knew of. It was a fun, pleasant listen, which opened doors about the country.
What does Antony Ferguson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Great Narration made the book extra enjoyable.

    Publisher's Summary:
Ed "Fast Eddie" Cobleigh served two tours of duty during the Vietnam air war, logging 375 combat sorties in the F-4 Phantom fighter/bomber.
In War for the Hell of It, Cobleigh shares his perspectives in a deeply personal account of a fighter pilot's life, one filled with moral ambiguity and military absurdities offset by the undeniable thrill of flying a fighter plane. With well-crafted prose that puts you into his Phantom's cockpit, Cobleigh vividly recounts the unexplainable loss of his wingman, the useless missions he flew, the need to trust his reflexes, eyesight, aggressiveness, and his survival instincts in the heat of combat. He discusses the deaths of his squadron mates and the contradictions of a dirty, semi-secret war fought from beautiful, exotic Thailand. This is an unprecedented look into the state of mind of a pilot as he experiences everything from the carnage of a crash to the joy of flying through a star-studded night sky, from the illogical political agendas of Washington to his own dangerous addiction to risk.
Cobleigh gives a stirring and emotional description of one man's journey into airborne hell and back, recounting the pleasures and the pain, the wins and the losses, and ultimately, the return.

From a fellow Vietnam fighter pilot
Outstanding writing into the deep emotion of
Combat flying in a war where most all warriors attempting to deal with returning to face an ungrateful nation. Returning were more pissed at their own government than the enemy sent to fight.
    Well done!
I was stationed at Udorn RTAFB - his stories took me back to the crazy times. This is the real deal, really well told.
Wish we required military service as a prerequisite for political office - Vietnam Vets would have kept us out of the Iraq mess.
    I am jealous
this book is very similar to viper pilot. If you liked viper pilot you will enjoy this book!
    Vietnam from the cockpit
There are a lot of books written about the war in Indochina and I have read many. However their are few from the perspective of that of a pilot. That is what I found intriguing about the book.
I liked the characterization of what it was like to pilot the F4. The loss of fellow pilots and the inner workings of what was felt flying , bombing and then coming back and having to go from danger to a safe place in a matter of hours.
The frustration of politics both in D.C. as well as military. The secret wars.
This is a book I can recommend if you are interested in the war as a combatant or a citizen and witnessed the changes in the USA as a result.
I was given this book to review and the opinions are my own and my honest thoughts on the book .
What would happen if Emerson was a fighter pilot
    Any additional comments?
Ed Cobleigh is a very gifted writer with extraordinary descriptive powers. He also has a gift for simile. It doesn't read like any other war memoir that you have ever read and Eric Martin does a great job reading it. Although it has some campy fighter pilot snark, it is kept at a minimum and he tells a very internal story.

Her story. His story. The love story of Joey and Rory.
By inviting so many into the final months of Joeys life as she battled cancer, Joey and Rory Feek captured hearts around the world with how they handled the diagnosis; the inspiring, simple way they chose to live; and how they loved each other every step of the way. But there is far more to the story.
My life is very ordinary, says Rory. On the surface, it is not very special. If you looked at it, day to day, it wouldnt seem like much. But when you look at it in a bigger contextas part of a larger storyyou start to see the magic that is on the pages of the book that is my life. And the more you look, the more you see. Or, at least, I do.
In this vulnerable book, he takes us for the first time into his own challenging life story and what it was like growing up in rural America with little money and even less family stability.
This is the story of a man searching for meaning and security in a world that offered neither. And its the story of a man who finally gives it all to a power higher than himself and soon meets a young woman who will change his heart forever.
In This Life I Live, Rory Feek helps us not only to connect more fully to his and Joeys story but also to our own journeys. He shows what can happen when we are fully open in lifes key moments, whether when meeting our life companion or tackling an unexpected tragedy. He also gives never-before-revealed details on their life together and what he calls the long goodbye, the blessing of being able to know that life is going to end and taking advantage of it. Rory shows how we are all actually there already and how we can learn to live that way every day.
A gifted man from nowhere and everywhere in search of something to believe in. A young woman from the Midwest with an angelic voice and deep roots that just needed a place to be planted. This is their story. Two hearts that found each other and touched millions of other hearts along the way.

    This Life I Live
I thought I KNEW about Rory and Joey's life, after all, I am one of their biggest fans! But Rory opened up so much, about his girls mother (which I had never heard) and about his past, which knowing him NOW seems so unlike the man I know him to be.
I love him for so many reasons, one being how he and Joey really loved each other. Through good times and bad, they had the glue called faith.
I can't wait for everyone to read this amazing book! If your heart isn't stirred, you don't have one!
Rory, God is still writing your chapters. I cannot wait to see how He finishes the book of your life!
I love you, as a sister in the faith. I can't wait for us to be with Joey on those streets in heaven.
Grace to you. Always, and then some...Dee Bradley
    P. S. I was there at the taping of "Hymns". So proud I saw a Grammy in the making.
    Such a beautiful story
Grab your Kleenex and fall in love with this heart breaking love story.
