Bought this book for me and my son and absolutely love it! Visted Egypt many many times as a kid and it was nice to revisit it all.

I really enjoy this book. It's explained as a story which makes it funner, and easier to understand! It is for beginners or even children. I'm 21 and don't mind listening it one bit. It's knowledgeable and has well so you can see what they're supposed to look like.

While I wish they used Egyptian rubrics for the artistic depictions, it does a good job of introducing Egyptian mythology without being overly graphic (for example, it doesn't say which of the pieces of Usir was missing). I love that they use the Egyptian names instead of the Greek, as well

: this is a great book that I highly recommend, and even though she left out quite a few gods, I think the ones she left out aren't completely needed. Also, the added feelings and thoughts give more life to the story, making it more engaging for older listeners. I think that you'll love this book.

Simply LOVE IT! The binding, the artwork, the tales, the quality of the paper.. every detail of this book makes it wonderful! I was looking for a book like this since it's perfect for children. It makes it fun for them to read. The only thing is that some of the vocabulary is a bit advance so you will definitely need them.

I bought also the Greek and Norse mythology and will definitely buy the Tales from the Arabian Night too.

Fantastic Audiobook

Fantastic Audiobook for everyone involved in Greek Mythology...Packed with great knowledge on Greek Mythology along with gods and monsters, I completely appreciated explaining this masterpiece. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn more regarding the subject as it is very informative.

A very descriptive guide

The author obviously did his homework before putting this book together. I found it be an intriguing amount of information. Although it was almost in the form on a verbal family tree. It did spark my interest in some of Matt's other books as well.

If you are curious about the Greek Mythology this book is a good starting point. It is concise in the description of the mythology characters and places.

Not only are they cool to consider

Facts about mythology are so interesting. Not only are they cool to consider, theyâll also come in handy when youâre doing the crossword puzzle or playing Jeopardy! If you donât have time to take a class, or read a big book, you can still learn a little about mythology by reading this handy ebook.

The Greek gods were created by man to explain the world around them, act as a means of exploration, provide legitimacy and authority to ancient Greek aristocracy, and provide entertainment for the masses. The religion of the ancient Greeks did not have a single source of written scripture such as the Bible or the Qur'an. Furthermore, the ancient Greeks did not believe in absolute truth as practiced by modern faiths such as Christianity and Judaism. Generally, a Greek city-state would devote itself to a particular god or a set of gods, and depending on the location of the city-state, the characteristics of the gods could vary widely.

What I like most about this book is that it is organized so that it is easy to read and understand. This is a great introduction to the Greek Myths and written in a style that makes it entertaining and not a chore to read. I was in awe through out my journey through the good, the bad, and the gore of the Greeks, with some Norse thrown in at the end. It's a great reference tool, and the stories are amazing in their own right. It covers everything and makes it easy to understand. Great buy.

If you love myth don't myth this one

I'm one of those readers that Roy Jackson, the author, talks about who as had a fascination for Greek gods and goddesses since I was a kid. Instead of playing cops & robbers or cowboys & Indians, my brother and I played Cronos & Zeus. I know a little weird. I was happy to see by reading this book that we were not far off the mark. Crosos was the leader of the Titans and Zeus was a son that Mrs. Crosos hid from him because he had the bad habit of eating his kids whole. It was the only way to get them out of the way since they were immortal. Jackson's book is full of stories of the gods, goddesses, plus primordial deities. It comprehensive and a pretty darn fun book.

They were not a unique phenomenon in Greek religious tradition, and the concepts of secrecy and revelation of mysteries only to initiates had parallels in the cults of Dionysius and Cybele. Similarly, the mystical dimensions of the rites, with their emphasis on a personal encounter with the deity, can be found in other cultic activities.

Nonetheless, for the ancient Greeks the vital issue was that only through the Mysteries could they escape the miserable eternal fate ascribed for them if they were not initiated. Sophocles summed it up neatly, declaring, "Oh thrice blessed the mortals who having completed the Mysteries have descended to the underworld for those only will there be a future life of happiness, for the others there will find nothing but suffering."

The rites comprising the Eleusinian Mysteries formed a Panhellenic event that attracted visitors from all over the Greek world, including Sicily and Cyrene. Ultimately, anyone who spoke Greek, male, female, free or slave, could present themselves as a candidate for initiation, provided that they were free of any sacrilege or untainted by a heinous crime such as murder. The Mysteries became the most sacred of the mystical celebrations that took place in Greece, and today the rites and rituals that made up what was a huge event are still the subject of academic controversy and religious debate.

What makes the Eleusinian Mysteries so important for people studying ancient Greece is that they survived for hundreds of years, well into the Christian era. They celebrated Demeter, a hugely important figure in Greece (particularly in both Athenian and Roman worship), and the whole festival was celebrated by the state with pomp.

This led to multiple violent clashes between the Judeans and the Romans, and the First Jewish-Roman War (66-73 CE) was one such clash (albeit on a larger scale than most). The Roman troops marched through and made their military might felt, first in the northern region of Galilee, then down the coast where they finally laid siege to the capital city of Jerusalem. This left three Roman fortress outposts, including Masada, that had been built by Herod the Great but had been taken over by various Judean factions. Masada was the last of these fortresses that the Romans attacked and proved the most difficult for them to seize, but seize it they did.

However, what made this battle qualitatively different from most was not just the difficulty Rome had in retaking control of it with incredibly disproportional military equipment and numbers, but also the actions of the Judean defenders. In the final hours of the battle, just as the Romans were about to breach the walls of the city, the defenders gathered together and committed mass suicide, rather than being killed or taken captive by the Romans. Josephus, a contemporary historian of the era, vividly described the mass suicide.

I enjoyed The Siege of Masada: The History and Legacy of the Battle that Ended the First Jewish-Roman War, but I wish that the editor would have gone over the text one more time, otherwise this book is probably five stars. I found several simple spelling mistakes and an occasional sentence structure problem. Still this e-book has an excruciating amount of detail about the personalities involved in the first Jewish Roman war.

This battle, which took place in Germany, is also known as the Varian disaster, named after the governor of the Roman province, Germania Publius Quinctilius Varus. Varus was not only the Roman governor of the Roman controlled sections of Germania, he was also the highest military authority, being able to make decisions as to the who, what, where, when, why, and how of military maneuvers and operations. It was Varus, then, who was in direct command of the Roman legions destroyed in the battle.

The battle remains pertinent not only to military historians and archeologists but also to modern military officers around the world as well. As recently as 2009, the United States of America's Army Command and General Staff College published a work that focused upon the Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest. This work was an examination of the battle in order to help understand the failures made by Varus, and how to avoid them. While it may seem unusual for a modern military to examine the mistakes of the past, it isn't; the Army used the battle as an example of how a theoretically inferior force, the Germanic warriors, were able to defeat a superior force in the Roman legions.

Indeed, the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest featured some of the finest fighting forces in the world the Roman legionaries and a group of people whom the Romans didn't consider human at all the Germanic tribes. Nonetheless, the battle between these two forces, in the narrow confines of the Teutoburg Forest, would be a turning point in the histories of both nations. Never again would Rome seek to establish a colony and create a functioning province out of the Germanic area; in fact, the Romans never ventured east of the Rhine River after the disastrous expedition. For the Germanic tribes, while they would later suffer from punishment excursions by various Roman legions following the battle of the Teutoburg Forest, they proved that they could hold their own against the might of the Roman Empire and that their land was indeed their own.

I was really looking forward to this lecture because it was the perfect length for a concise but informative overview of a fascinating topic. Unfortunately, I was bored by this scattered and repetitive mess. You are better off watching a good documentary, especially because you need to see maps of Germany and the battle schematics.

So feared were they in Greece that their very appearance on the battlefield could cause entire enemy armies to flee in terror, and in one of history's most famous battles, 300 Spartan warriors headed a combined Greek force which held off the hundreds of thousands of Persian warriors of Xerxes' invading army for three days at Thermopylae, inflicting an estimated 20,000 casualties upon them before dying to the last man rather than retreating.

Sparta will forever be known for its military prowess, but they had lives off the battlefield as well, and their way of life was also unique. For example, Spartan females were formally educated, which was a rarity among the city-states, and the Spartan way of life was entirely dependent on a class of indentured servants known as the helots. Yet the Laws of Lycurgus, which ordered all Spartans to disregard art (with the exception of song, which the Spartans prized, and some forms of music and poetry), to distrust philosophy, and to abhor excess in all things, were designed to create the perfect warrior society, and they did. As a result, the Spartans became notorious for "Laconic phrases."

The book is both brief and concise; nevertheless, the book contains numerous Greek words and their meaning. Sparta had the freest women in Greece even though their women were not citizens in the same manner has the Spartan warriors who are citizens. The great internal Greek wars sapped the strength of the Spartan armies by the killing of Spartan soldiers.

Though the world came to know of the Norse and their legends through Roman interaction at about the time of Christ, most of what we came to know were handed-down from folk tales gathered by native writers like Snorri Sturluson (c. 1179 - 1241). This was from a time when the Norse had already been converted to Christianity. Some of what Sturluson wrote was clearly influenced by Christian beliefs of the time. As with all sources, we have to assume at least a little bit of bias was involved. The age of belief in the Norse gods had ended. We can only guess how much of those old beliefs were left out because they may have been incompatible with the new beliefs of Christendom. Sturluson gathered the tales in a work now known as the Prose Edda.

Several anonymous writers of the pre-Christian era created poems which have collected in what is now called the Poetic Edda. These pre-date Sturluson's work and thus are far more likely to give us insights into the thinking and attitudes of the early Norse people.

Danish scholar Saxo Grammaticus gave us a Latin language version of Danish history, Gesta Danorum, written in the twelfth century. But even earlier, we have more matter-of-fact writing of Roman historian Tacitus in the first century, discussing the tribes of the region they called Germania.

As with most stories, it's best to start at the beginning. And as with any story of gods, we start with the Norse version of creation.

The city was frequently mentioned in the great archives of antiquity, but its origins lie in the depths of prehistory. Its strategic location, with plenty of shipbuilding wood coming from the nearby mountains, made many powerful states eager to control the territory. Over time, Byblos and its surrounding area were occupied by the Amorites, Canaanites, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Arabs, Crusaders, Mamelukes, and Ottomans.

From the earliest of times, Byblos was an active commercial center, trading extensively with Egypt, where it exported cedar wood from the Phoenician homelands in exchange for papyrus. As a result, Egypt would have a significant influence on the art and culture of Byblos, and the city quickly assumed a position of supremacy in the Mediterranean, thanks in part to its early use of writing. Archaeological evidence uncovered at the city show the existence of a Phoenician alphabet being used from as early as 1200 BCE, and the remains of Phoenician cities along the coast of Lebanon bear witness to the important role they played as a meeting place between the east and west, making it a focal point for the fusion of cultures in the ancient world. The Phoenicians did not generally seek political advantages or territorial expansion in their homeland - their interest was primarily in international trade.

Much of the coastline of the area is heavily urbanized, which likely obscures many further interesting structures that might completely change the narrative of the site if they were uncovered. Moreover, many of the archaeological remains are openly exposed to the elements. The construction of a modern jetty has modified the coastal configuration, which has exacerbated the problem of wave energy from the strong storms that regularly batter the coast.

This great monumental tomb was completed in the middle of the fourth century BCE so that the name of Mausolus would be famous forever, as indeed it has been ever since. Like one of the other wonders, the Temple of Artemis, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was huge for its type of building, being about 150 feet tall and possessing 36 columns of marble on its four sides, nine to a side. Also like the Temple of Artemis, the site of the Mausoleum includes ruins that have been excavated in modern times. Using this, an accurate scale replica has been successfully constructed in Istanbul, Turkey, and pieces of the beautiful sculpture on the Mausoleum have been retrieved. Therefore, it is one of the few wonders that survived in some form and have directly inspired modern artists and architects.

On top of it all, this is the only known major architectural Hellenistic work devoted to a secular theme (the burial of two mortals) rather than religious art dedicated to the Greek pantheon. The themes of the carvings even included many mythical enemies of the Greeks, such as the Amazons and centaurs, and the architecture was a marvel of engineering that was copied by neo-Classical buildings.

The ultimate fate of the Mausoleum itself is unknown, though it was known to have survived the city's conquest by Alexander the Great in 334 BCE intact. Pirates who occupied the city in the first century BCE also left it unharmed, and though a series of earthquakes had reduced it to foundations by the 15th century CE, it was still intact enough to be considered a "wonder" by a Christian pilgrim, the Archbishop Eustathius of Thessalonica, in the 12th century.

Unfortunately, the arrival of the Knights of St. John (the Hospitallers) in Rhodes and Bodrum spelled doom for the great structure. They used materials from it to reinforce their castle at Bodrum when it was threatened by the Turks in 1522 and burned the marble for lime, though at least they did retrieve and install the best of the sculptures in their castle. The burial chamber of Mausolus and Artemisia, which had been underground, was also looted at some point over the centuries, though husband and wife were likely cremated in the Greek fashion and buried in urns.
