The Siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE is arguably the most important event in Jewish history. First, it was the central battle in the First Jewish-Roman war. Second, the failure of the siege on the Jewish side resulted in the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem, a disaster that would eventually prove both permanent and catastrophic, since it was never rebuilt. Third, it permanently altered the diaspora of Judaism in the ancient world. Fourth, because it was indecisive in breaking the power of the Jewish revolt permanently, it was also inconclusive and led to further, inevitable revolts that broke Judean identity completely. The siege of Jerusalem was a classic case of two opposing and incompatible worldviews. It was not the first time the Romans had conquered the capital of the kingdom, nor was it the first time Jerusalem had been sacked by a foreign power. It was unusual for the Romans, however, because it was not the final act that such a conquest generally was.

The Roman Siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE: The History and Legacy of Rome's Destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple is very interesting and quite confusing in some sections. The sources for this book are Flavius Josephus (a Jewish traitor and historian), Publius Cornelius Tacitus (a Roman who disliked the Jews or at a minimum did not understand them), and the Babylonian Talmud (which reflects the opinions of the Jewish population in Babylon who were not present during the destruction of Jerusalem). The book discusses the Babylonian exile and the return of the Jews to Israel. I am troubled about how the authors use the word cult to describe some of the people who were Jewish. In addition, the Cult of the Roman Emperor was discussed, and why the Jewish people refused to tolerate anything Roman in their Temple. The other interesting point is that the Jewish nation was fighting a Civil War during the time the Romans attempted to reconquer Jerusalem. Not sure I understood all the Jewish groups that were involved in the Civil War, but the zealots were the strictest and hated anything to do with Rome.

I recommend this book to anyone whoâs interested in the history of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Second Temple.

Some great facts about the Spartans and Xerxes

This book wasn't as dry as some of his others and I actually enjoyed it. It also gave more facts on the battles the Greeks and Spartans fought against the Persians, not really enhancing them. There were definitely some facts about Spartan women that I didn't know. They were nearly as much warriors as the men. Too bad the Spartans treated their Helots so badly and that they enforced that only original families could become warriors. It bit them in the butt. Overall, a good read and I recommend it for those who are interested in finding out more about the Spartans and Greeks of that period.

Nice book!

I find this book interesting and impressive! Indeed, this has been an engaging read that has given me so much info and facts about Sparta and the Spartan way of life. It has always interest me to read on people who made a big difference on our history. And this book was able to show me a lot of things about these ultimate Greek warriors.

I watched the movie, 300 and the TV series, Spartacus. I've always been a huge fan of these kind of stories. It's really nice to be able to read facts about the Spartans and how they were like in ancient history. This book is pretty good. It is very comprehensive and interesting.

The narrator's voice was monotone the whole time and the book read like a textbook. You are hit with a constant barrage of proper nouns both people and places to the point where it becomes nearly impossible to truly follow.

A Good Starting Point!

The audiobook Greek Mythology, Gods & Goddesses Explained!: Fascinating Stories of Greek Gods, Goddesses & Heroes Revealing the Birth of Ancient Greek Mythology & Its Impact on the Modern World by Jeffrey Houston, Narrated by Mike Norgaard was one I have been looking forward to listening to for some time now. I have taught high school Spanish and English Lit and Composition for the past 18 years, which includes a marking period of Greek Mythology embedded in our Freshmen curriculum, through the teaching of The Illiad and The Odyssey. Let me start by saying that when I was in high school, I did NOT enjoy reading these two texts. I think it may have been because I had a difficult time understanding them. When I began teaching, I learned that not only would be revisiting the two texts I dreaded the most, but I also would be responsible for teaching them to teenagers who were in the position I once was. No! I vowed to do everything in my power to help them feel successful and enjoy themselves throughout this long unit of study. Through trial and error of many different strategies and techniques, I'm proud to say that our 9 week period on Greek Mythology is now a favorite among incoming high school students! Yay! I wanted to listen to this audiobook to see if there were any new ideas, stories, and/or information I could add to my lessons or bring back to the classroom.

An absolute favorite!....

I discovered this book at about the age of 10 (I'm much older now!). I must have checked this book out of the library 100 times. I'm glad to know it's still in print so that my son can read it when his interest in Greek mythology develops. Really, it is a fabulous book.

During the fifth century BC, the Republic's energies were directed toward uniting or subduing her nearby Latin-speaking neighbors. Thus began a grinding five-year war between Greek phalanxes and Roman legions. By 272 BC the last Greek city in Italy had capitulated, and Italy was united under Roman hegemony.

Although Mommsen used the AUC system of Roman years, which begins as the Roman year 1 (754 BC), we have transposed these dates to those of the Christian era. All dates are BC except where otherwise indicated.

We do not recommend Mommsen for those without a firm grasp of Roman Republican history. The work of Cyril Robinson would be a great place to start for the neophyte historian.

Informative and educational

If your kids have an assignment about Greek Mythology, then this book should be your best choice. It is very informative as it discusses the family tree and the history of each and every Greek mythological gods and goddesses in chronological order. It describes each god/goddess in detail and his/her relationship with the other gods and goddesses. It is such a useful and informative book.

An interesting book

Iâve always been enthralled in Greek Mythology because they have a lot of interesting celestial beings and the stories surrounding them are enchanting. Thatâs why when I saw this book, I immediately downloaded it and I didnât regret having it on my kindle archive. The author of this book has described each and every celestial being and what role they portrayed. Though I have read various Greek mythology stories, I didnât know that the celestial beings were divided into three tiers namely: The Titans, The Olympians and The Heroes. The bottom-line is, this book is a good read, and the only thing that didnât suit well for me is there were a few images that were not shown in the book. An âxâ mark was shown there instead. I think it has something to do with the format of the images.

I found this book and at first I am hesitant to purchase this book because I taught this book was the same to the other books that I read about Greek mythology but I was wrong. Amazing Book

It is very interesting to discover the stories surrounding ancient Greece, Titans, the gods, heroes and everything else the Greek mythology is known for. As Greek culture is one of the oldest cultures in the history and as a history buff I love reading about Greek mythology in particular. In this book I found great stories concentrated around Greek mythology. I believe this to be one of the keys in understanding the mindset, not only of these ancient people, but of our modern world as well.

Summarization of Noteworthy Characters From Greek Mythology

Greek mythology was my favorite subject in high school. They are interesting, mystical and captivating, no wonder it is still a favorite topic of certain popular book today. I saw this book while browsing, and bought it just to refresh myself with greek mythology.

It was a very nice read. A summarization of popular stories of each gods, goddesses, heroes and of course who could forget about the Titans. I particularly love the glossary part though. I remember needing this kind of glossary when exam is coming.

Nice short reads, I was actually feeling nostalgic about it. I recommend this book for students who is also taking up Greek Mythology as one of their special subject. This book also contains loads of free books inside, which is a great bonus.

Lots of info about mythology without heaps of research. Would be excellent for younger people to learn stories about demi-gods

I like it but,it was too short.It was over just as I was getting into it.it is a quick read.
