Publisher's Summary:
In 1955, on a visit to South Africa, Robert Ardrey became aware of the growing evidence that man had evolved on the African continent from carnivorous, predatory stock - ones who had also, long before man, achieved the use of weapons.
A dramatist, Ardrey's interest in the African discoveries sprang less from purely scientific grounds than from the radical new light they cast on the eternal question: Why do we behave as we do? Are we naturally inclined toward war and weapons?
From 1955 to 1961, Ardrey commuted between the museums and libraries and laboratories of the North and the games reserves and fossil beds of Africa, trying to answer that question. Eventually, his investigation expanded to include nationalism and patriotism, private property and social order, hierarchy and status seeking, even conscience. All revealed roots in our most ancient animal beginnings and parallels in primate societies.
African Genesis is at once the story of an unprecedented personal search and a story of man that had never before been told. It is a shocking book in that it challenges assumptions of human uniqueness that color every segment of modern thought and every aspect of our daily life.
While evolutionary science has advanced markedly since Ardrey's times, his insights on human behavior have a timeless quality, and African Genesis remains a classic reference for anyone exploring life's biggest questions.
Critic Reviews:
"The most enjoyable and stimulating book on the evolution of man that has been published for some time." (The Nation)

and argues that our greatest worry should be Global Cooling
This is the first book of series of 4, ending with Hunting Hypothesis. They are so readable and informative that I have reread them many times since first read in 1973.
This book was written in 1961, way before the Global Warming controversy, and argues that our greatest worry should be Global Cooling. A whole chapter is devoted to various theories to explain why the weather during the last 2 million years has been so variable. He nearly argues that without the ice ages, during which man became man. Be sure to read ' Audreys theory of Galactic climate change. It makes great sense to me.
I highly recommend it.
I Can't understand why this opinion isn't offered in college philosophy classes. It's A refreshing alternative to Rousseau. Some of the animal world examplesare likely a bit dated. After all the book was copyrighted in 1961, but the overall philosophical opinion compares, in my mind, with the top philosophers of the ancient and postmodern. I highly recommend it.
Must read
"Not in innocence and not in Asia was mankind born" I remember that from when I first read it 48 years ago in college. I wanted to re read it once more. Great little book.
Hardly dated at all
An important book that helped change the field of human evolution. Written in the sixties, but seems timeless. Some great and memorable prose, not just for a science work, but for any form of literature.
