Simple and Eye Opening

The book was systematic and took me on a journey. It wasn't a long one but it was an experience. It confirmed I should be thankful everyday and I'm already rich. Generosity keeps you from being taken in by the acquisition of money for what every reasons. But without love giving means nothing. Awesome book great perspective of HOW TO BE RICH.

Clear, Careful, Considerate Confrontation

McLaren knows, from personal struggle, that confronting a paradigm can be a scary thing. Rethinking the central messages of faith can feel, at first, like you are abandoning your faith altogether. McLaren helps us walk this path with a sense of growing confidence. He confronts the set of beliefs and priorities that have re-framed and constrained Christianity in the last couple of centuries - frameworks that have moved us away from a focus on love of God and neighbor toward a focus on getting to heaven through correct doctrine. He helps to turn us back to the message of love - and he does so in a way that embodies that love. HIs message is clear (and clearly challenging) but also carefully grounded in scripture and wisdom and is communicated in a way that graciously invites us to join the journey.

An excellent thought provoking book!

Absolutely loved this book. Recently I have been struggling through a number of disturbing questions about my faith. Rather than just giving up and abandoning Christianity altogether, this book has helped me see a noble quest that I can truly and enthusiastically embrace. I still don't know if I will fit in my church or not but at least now I have a gracious and Christ-like framework in which I can proceed. Thanks for writing this book. I feel like I have hope again.

The idea of the book is fine however, it is written in such a way that it alienates the non scholar reader. The ideas are scattered throughout the the book and seems to be written by a woman with ooohhh shinny...

Has there ever been a time in church history where 'art' has been more neglected and at the same time so despised (and even feared)?

Some of the questions tackled:

Can Christians make art that is religious in nature? Can Christians make art that is NOT religious in nature? Why are there so few pictures of anything in new "outreach" churches? Why are so many churches today made from the material that metal storage sheds are made from? Are stained glass windows unbiblical?

How many churches refuse to hang even a painting in the building!

Schaeffer seeks a Biblical footing for his reasonings. He leaves the reader with an important and balanced perspective about a case for art in churches today. He encourages a mindset for the Christian to take God's commands into account and seperate human traditions that run contrary.

It turns out that the Bible actually has a lot to say on the subject, some of it in exacting language while others can be clearly separated.

Inspiring

I've listened to this book many times. As an artist it's encouraged me to develop an overview and strategy for my work. As a Christian, it's inspired me to live my life creatively.

Easily Read and Applied/Contextualized

Thorn does not take an academic approach or the approach of continual monotonous story telling about himself in ministry.

This trilogy of books are very well written with careful and thoughtful language that cuts straight to topics we all hope to read about.

While not being a ecclesiastical study in tradional terms the trilogy centers on Christ's person and work as the heart of the Church and develops many concentric circles that give a beautiful and complete look at the Gospel's affect on church life and thus the lives of members of churches.

As with Thorn's other books they are as beneficial for teaching and preaching as they are for devotional and discipling purposes. Cannot recommend enough.
