    Title: Trident
Subtitle: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader
    Author: John Bruning, Jason Redman
    Narrator: Erik Bergmann
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-05-13
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 721 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Decorated Navy SEAL Lieutenant Jason Redman served his country courageously and with distinction in Columbia, Peru, Afghanistan, and Iraq, where he commanded mobility and assault forces. But his journey was not without its supreme challenges. He was critically wounded in 2007 when he was struck by machine-gun fire at point blank range. During his intense recovery period, Redman posted a sign on his door, warning all who entered not to "feel sorry for [his] wounds." His sign became both a statement and a symbol for wounded warriors everywhere. Vivid and powerful, emotionally resonant and illuminating, The Trident traces the evolution of a modern warrior, husband, and father, a man who has come to embody the never-say-die spirit that defines one of America's elite fighting forces.
    Members Reviews:
    The honesty is overwhelming.
What made the experience of listening to Trident the most enjoyable?
The story is put together well. While starting out at what is a life changing event, it nicely drops back in time to explain how Redman got to that point and what brought him past it.
What did you like best about this story?
The brutal honesty Redman has about his flaws, how he did not see them and why. We are all like him but my flaws don't have the life or death impact a person in a position as him has.
What about Erik Bergmanns performance did you like?
Great! His voice and inflection was perfect at sensitive times as well as heroic.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I would not say extreme, but more riveted. I could not quit listening wondering how Redman would react to his next situation.
    Any additional comments?
Of read a lot of other books from Special Forces Operators, but this is by far the best. I do believe it will be used for years in leadership training. The way Redman identified flaws and then corrected them is supreme, but more telling is his love and honor of his wife. This book is loaded for a spectrum of different genre readers.
Great story, well read! Really affected me.
What made the experience of listening to Trident the most enjoyable?
This is a lesson of personal redemption as Lt. Redman gets a second chance after nearly blowing his career. This is one committed Naval Officer! Erik Bergman is a very talented reader; he sounded really connected to the story which was surprising in its depth.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The most powerful images in the book were when Lt. Redman was traveling for medical attention after suffering devastating facial injuries in battle. The reaction of fellow travelers upset him by the lack of awareness and appreciation for the sacrifice of the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our freedom.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Too many of us take those in our armed services for granted. My outlook has been changed. I am glad there are so many committed men and women out there looking out for us.
    Any additional comments?
Every American citizen that enjoys the freedoms that too many of us take for granted should read this book! You will learn to be a better citizen.
Not Superman - Real Man With Incredible Courage
What made the experience of listening to Trident the most enjoyable?
I read a lot of memoirs and other nonfiction books about American men at war.

  • Bruchko Audiobook by Bruce Olson

    Title: Bruchko
    Author: Bruce Olson
    Narrator: Gary Dikeos
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-24-13
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 214 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
What happens when a nineteen-year-old boy leaves home and heads into the jungles to evangelize a murderous tribe of South American Indians?
For Bruce Olson, it meant capture, disease, terror, loneliness, and torture. But what he discovered through trial and error has revolutionized the world of missions.
Bruchko, which has sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide, has been called "more fantastic and harrowing than anything Hollywood could concoct." Having lived with the Motilone Indians since1961, Olson has won the friendship of four presidents of Colombia and made appearances before the United Nations because of his efforts. Bruchko includes the story of Olson's1988 kidnapping by communist guerrillas and the nine months of captivity that followed. This revised version of his story is an amazing reminder that simple faith in Christ can make anything possible.

    Inspiring!
This is an amazing story of how God can use one person to impact a nation. He had his own connection with God and chose to listen to Him instead of listening to a missionary group who had lost sight of their true mission.
Although I know I am not called to travel deep into the jungles of any country to bring the message of Jesus, I am inspired to seek God in how He wants to use me to bring His love, compassion, and mercy to the lost.
    I highly recommend this book!!!
If you are interested in missions, read this!
Would you consider the audio edition of Bruchko to be better than the print version?
I don't think there's a difference in them, except who is reading.
You can't put one down, and you can't stop listening to the other.
What did you like best about this story?
Seeing how God worked in Bruchko's life and personal development
Which character as performed by Gary Dikeos was your favorite?
    Bruchko. Duh.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. Driving from Logan, OH to Ashland, WI.
    Any additional comments?
GREAT BOOK! So glad it was added to Audible!
Such a faith building, encouraging story!
Fabulous book! I didn't like the narration for the first several chapters... but as the story went in, it got better (or I was so enthralled with the story it stopped bothering me).
THIS BOOK MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON ME
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
YES, I already have recommended this book. This is a very powerful and inspirational book.
What other book might you compare Bruchko to and why?
i DARED TO CALL HIM FATHER. Which I also enjoyed. These are both autobiographies in which both people dared to be submitted to God, and love the people group they were in.
Which character as performed by Gary Dikeos was your favorite?
    Bobby and also Brucho
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, this book made me laugh and cry. It had surprising turns and twists in the story.
Good story. Voice acting was hard to listen to.
The story was good, but the voice acting was hard to hear. I am sure finding someone to pronounce all of the names and words was not easy.

  • A Street Cat Named Bob Audiobook by James Bowen

Title: A Street Cat Named Bob
Subtitle: And How He Saved My Life
    Author: James Bowen
    Narrator: Kristopher Milnes
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-13-13
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 439 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
When street musician James Bowen found an injured cat curled up in the hallway of his apartment building, he had no idea how much his life was about to change. James was living hand to mouth on the streets of London, barely making enough money to feed himself - the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet, James couldn't resist helping the strikingly intelligent, but very sick animal, whom he named Bob. He slowly nursed Bob back to health and then sent the cat on his way, never imagining that he would see him again. But Bob had other ideas.
    Members Reviews:
Three Cheers for Bob and James!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If you love animals, buy this book. If you love cats, definitely buy this book. If you love a story that's gritty but has plenty of hope and joy, oh, please! Buy this book! You'll be so happy you did. This was a straight through, "cover-to-cover" listen for me (which is quite life-disrupting, but oh, well...!)
What other book might you compare A Street Cat Named Bob to and why?
This is in the vein of all feel-good animal books. You'll love this if you're read the books about Dewey the Library Cat. And though they're not quite in the same vein or up to the same standards of "literature," "All Creatures, Great and Small," is just as delightful. But "A Streetcat Named Bob" also brings out elements of how people survive on the streets, what it's like to be at rockbottom, and what it's like to be invisible to society. This is a book about dignity, survival, and hope. And learning to live after making, perhaps, self-destructive choices.
Which character as performed by Kristopher Milnes was your favorite?
Kristopher Milnes so captured James that I was startled to hear the "actual" James when I was doing YouTube searches. (Yes, you can find James and Bob on YouTube if you'd like to see the duo in action). He really conveys hopelessness, conveys joy well. He made this book as authentic as it gets. Mind you, there's a just a sprinkling of profanity in this, and Mr. Milnes delivers it with the anger and frustration with the situation that it deserves. I hope James Bowen was satisfied with the performance because it really, really works well with this audiobook and with the tone of the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were so many moments that moved me, and some would feel like spoilers to write down. But suffice it to say that the bond between Bob and James will move you. My cats adore me, this I know. But walk with me in a harness? Sit by my feet among a crowd, trusting me to protect them? Bob is truly special. But James pretty much rocks too!One scene, when Bob, in absolute terror in an extreme situation, runs off shows the complete breakdown of James, leaving all behind in order to find his beloved cat. This from a man who has as close to nothing as it gets: he's absolutely willing to lose it all to find his buddy, the extraordinary Bob.
    Any additional comments?
Unlike the feel-good animal books mentioned, there's plenty of social commentary here that makes this book unique. You will see what the streets are like. You will see what it's like to be someone struggling to make the right choices when there are few resources.

  • Pastrix Audiobook by Nadia Bolz-Weber

    Title: Pastrix
Subtitle: The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint

    Narrator: Nadia Bolz-Weber
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 25 mins

    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 577 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Nadia Bolz-Weber takes no prisoners as she reclaims the term "pastrix"(pronounced "pas-triks," a term used by some Christians who refuse to recognize female pastors) in her messy, beautiful, prayer-and-profanity laden narrative about an unconventional life of faith.
Heavily tattooed and loud-mouthed, Nadia, a former stand-up comic, sure as hell didn't consider herself to be religious leader material-until the day she ended up leading a friend's funeral in a smoky downtown comedy club. Surrounded by fellow alcoholics, depressives, and cynics, she realized: These were her people. Maybe she was meant to be their pastor.
Using life stories-from living in a hopeful-but-haggard commune of slackers to surviving the wobbly chairs and war stories of a group for recovering alcoholics, from her unusual but undeniable spiritual calling to pastoring a notorious con artist-Nadia uses stunning narrative and poignant honesty to portray a woman who is both deeply faithful and deeply flawed, giving hope to the rest of us along the way.
Wildly entertaining and deeply resonant, this is the audiobook for people who hunger for a bit of hope that doesn't come from vapid consumerism or navel-gazing; for women who talk too loud, and guys who love chick flicks; for the gay man who loves Jesus, and won't allow himself to be shunned by the church. In short, this audiobook is for every thinking misfit suspicious of institutionalized religion, but who is still seeking transcendence and mystery.

Have you just ever been really surprised by a book? I was on the fence about this book thinking it was perhaps too contrived...tattooed edgy pastor makes her mark in mainstream religious america, telling them what it's all REALLY about. Ohhhh...not so at all. She is brutally honest about her life and shortcomings. She is the real deal. And she talks about her relationship with Jesus and the Gospel in ways that bring it all to life. I have read this book twice and am on my third time. (I have NEVER read a book more than once...EVER). There are so many buried, insightful treasures in this book. We need more voices like hers to make Christianity relevant again in our times.
    Fabulous , Entertaining, Honest.
All Christians don't look a like , act a like or worship a like , THANKS BE TO GOD.
I am an Anglo Saxon wasp. A Southerner, no less. I am Episcopalian. I was born a Baptist and had parents just like Nadia ,that unlike the rest of the majority of their church didn't judge.
I am 68. Straight , married, professional. God loves me too. He loves us all .
If you think you don't fit the mold. GOOD NEWS ! You don't have to.
Thank you Nadia , for your ministry, honesty, and being real.

    Inspiring, thought-provoking, and edgy
Pastrix is an inspiring, thought-provoking, and edgy description of the Christian spiritual journey of Nadia Bolz-Weber, who is a Lutheran pastor and a nationally recognized figure in the Emerging Church (Liberal Christian) movement. Bolz-Weber clearly has a very fine mind and a remarkable personal spirituality that has survived her previous life as an alcoholic and standup comic, her scarred conservative church upbringing, and several years as a searching, lost soul.

Length: 11 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-13-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 223 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Written with the same brilliance and boldness that made Buddhism Without Beliefs a classic in its field, Confession of a Buddhist Atheist is Stephen Batchelor's account of his journey through Buddhism, which culminates in a groundbreaking new portrait of the historical Buddha.
Stephen Batchelor grew up outside London and came of age in the 1960s. Like other seekers of his time, instead of going to college, he set off to explore the world. Settling in India, he eventually became a Buddhist monk in Dharamsala, the Tibetan capital-in-exile, and entered the inner circle of monks around the Dalai Lama. He later moved to a monastery in South Korea to pursue intensive training in Zen Buddhism. Yet the more Batchelor read about the Buddha, the more he came to believe that the way Buddhism was being taught and practiced was at odds with the actual teachings of the Buddha himself.
Charting his journey from hippie to monk to lay practitioner, teacher, and interpreter of Buddhist thought, Batchelor reconstructs the historical Buddha's life, locating him within the social and political context of his world. In examining the ancient texts of the Pali Canon, the earliest record of the Buddha's life and teachings, Batchelor argues that the Buddha was a man who looked at human life in a radically new way for his time, more interested in the question of how human beings should live in this world than in notions of karma and the afterlife. According to Batchelor, the outlook of the Buddha was far removed from the piety and religiosity that has come to define much of Buddhism as we know it today.
Both controversial and deeply personal, Confession of a Buddhist Atheist is a fascinating exploration of a religion that continues to engage the West. Batchelor's insightful, deeply knowledgeable, and persuasive account will be an essential book for anyone interested in Buddhism.
    Members Reviews:
    Deeply informative, refreshingly honest.
Most of my life I've been agnostic. While I've never found a reason to abandon my skepticism, I'd have to admit that it has never been an easy intellectual position for me to find a sense of comfort or satisfaction in. Batchelor's book may well become a cornerstone in the psychological construct I use to view existence.
I am very impressed by Batchelor's deeply personal knowledge and experience of Buddhism. I am even more impressed by the way he offers this up to the listener. The book is not a sermon or a polemic, or even an argument, but an account of his lifelong exploration of Buddhism. His account of living and working with some of the central figures of the practice, (religion/philosophy), his own experiences of practice, and his deep, disciplined, and I must say skeptical, research into the historical roots of Buddhism have provided a wealth of information to my exploration of mindfulness.

His outrageous sense of humor, however, rages unabated.

    Story and inexpensive
This reads more like a long journal entry of a recovering alcoholic that is completely disinterested the achievement of recovery. As though he simply exchanged one vice for another, from drinking to running. The voice of disinterested young as a disinterested adult.
I got the chills a couple of times!
So, I make a list of books that relate to each month's awareness/observance/etc. I came across this one while looking for books about addiction and bought the audible right away. I am so glad I did!
The story is raw and real, brutal in its honesty, and unapologetic. The lifelong addiction is sommething I understand all too well. While I did have the problem myself, I come from a family of alcoholics and have known several people with drug addictions. And it's hard. Most don't understand what goes through the minds of an addict, and Mr. Shubaly walks through his battles like a bull in a fine china shop; no tiptoeing, just laying it out like it was.
When he speaks about depression, I shook. I have always suffered from it, and had trouble explaining what I was going through. He put words to so many of the feelings that I just couldn't articulate, and I actually had tears at the relief that yeah, someone knew EXACTLY what was in my mind.
It's very well done, and he reads it himself, so you get a feel that it's more personal than if he had had someone else do it. I highly suggest this for anyone who might like a look inside the psyche of an addict and/or person with depression.

This was a FANTASTIC book and I'm so sad it ended! Funny, heartbreaking, motivating, and just effing great. Highly recommend.

    Title: In My Skin
    Subtitle: A Memoir of Addiction
    Author: Kate Holden

Length: 8 hrs and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-01-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 67 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Called "Quite simply in a class of its own... the work of a stunningly talented writer who both graces and surpasses her material" (Guardian), this is the frank, harrowing, and true story of one young woman's descent into heroin addiction and prostitution and the long, arduous struggle to redeem her life that made her stronger. A shy, bookish college graduate from a solid middle-class home, Kate Holden was uncertain of her way in life. When she decided to try her first hit of heroin as a one-time adventure with friends, she did not anticipate that the drug would take over. She lost her job and apartment and stole from her family. Desperation drove her first to offer her body on the streets and then in high-class brothels, where she discovered hidden strengths as well as parts of herself that frightened her. With the acceptance and unyielding love of a family that never abandoned her, Kate Holden ultimately defeated the drug and left her netherworld behind.
    Editorial Reviews:
Narrator Christy Lynn shows off her versatility as she performs Kate Holden's harrowing memoir of her descent into heroin addiction and prostitution. Lynn uses a bright, open voice to show Holden's sense of invincibility during the first stages of her heroin use, evoking the allure that the drug had for the young woman. But as Holden's drug use spirals out of control, Lynn adds a subtle edge of desperation and brittle cynicism to her performance. Lynn does not sensationalize Holden's sexual encounters, but chooses to render them with rueful straightforwardness. Listeners will find Holden's story powerful in its depiction of humanity and love amidst squalor and self-destruction.
    Members Reviews:
    NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING...
So it turns out there's a very different reaction when an attractive, college-educated woman turns to prostitution and heroin addiction in Australia than the one people use where I'm from (U.S.). There is much less shame, much more matter-of-fact acceptance (her parents told the neighbors!) and much more detail provided on her life working in the brothel and her clients than I was prepared for.
The book hooked me though, because I didn't realize there was another way of looking at heroin/prostitution than hopeless/shame/despair. Kate Holden doesn't adopt that tone and I have to admit, it made the book really stand out to me. On the other hand, she doesn't exactly recommend the lifestyle. She's a reporter - here's what I did, here's why, here's how I felt, here's what I did next, etc.
It is written from the addict's point of view and I can see how it might anger some family members or others who've suffered from the addiction of loved ones. But it did make me think. And I never once doubted her story was true (Looking at you sideways, James Frey.)
All in all, if you're looking for a tour through the guts of addiction, here you go. But it wasn't what I expected - in a good way.
    Appalling narrative voice
Nearly gave up on listening to this audiobook due to the narrator's unintelligible accent; somewhere between a US southern drawl and a Kiwi accent. Very hard to understand. Shame, because the story was interesting.
    Not Addiction, pride in prostitution
What disappointed you about In My Skin?
I thought this would be a personal journey on a way out of drug addiction.

    Publisher's Summary:
In Wildlife Wars, Terry Grosz serves up fascinating stories - alternately hair-raising, hilarious, and heart-wrenching - from his 30-year struggle to protect wildlife in America. A natural storyteller, Grosz writes about the remarkable characters he met - on both sides of the law - as he matched wits with elk poachers, salmon snaggers, commercial-market duck hunters, and a host of other law-breakers. Best of all, though, these stories are so remarkably entertaining you won't want to put them down. Wildlife Wars is the winner of the 2000 National Outdoor Book Award, Nature and the Environment Category.
    Members Reviews:
    Comically bad writing
The stories are fine, but the writing is atrocious. The stories should just have been told orally. The writing definitely takes away from the stories.
Author is his own biggest fan.
Couldn't finish this book. If you like listening to a guy praising himself, referencing his "impressive size no less than 200 times, and mistake writing tickets for "hunting his fellow man", then go for it. Not terrible stories, once you get past all the self-praise.
    Good stories, annoying author
Overall the book was interesting and I learned a lot about the duties of fish and game enforcement officers, but I can't overemphasize how often the author mentioned his enormous size. It was disgusting. Literally hundreds of times he says how huge he is and is so proud of it that by the end of the book I was tired of hearing from him. If you can live with that it's worth a read.
Title should be: "reckless egomaniac tells lies"
What disappointed you about Wildlife Wars?
The author is an unabashed egomaniac and tells stories of his wreckless and overzealous pursuits while he views himself as a divine hunter of man. What a joke.
What was most disappointing about Terry Groszs story?
The fact that Terry can't get over himself. Ridiculous.
What about Pete Simonellis performance did you like?
Good narration. No complaints at all about the narrator.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Wildlife Wars?
I would have stuck to truthful stories and less talk about the author's perceived divinity and greatness. A glaring example of an overzealous, self righteous almost lawman putting multiple human lives in danger to satisfy his insatiable ego.
    Any additional comments?
This author would have been in prision if the stories he tells were true. Firing 30 times at unarmed kids running away isn't something to brag about. Idiot.
    Interesting perspective
I enjoyed this book, probably won't be one that I re-read. The book is a collection of memoir essays by a California game warden so it was an interesting perspective on conservation from someone completely dedicated to preserving nature but, as he describes himself "not exactly a tree-hugger." I don't think it's meant to be bombed right through since the stories can get a little repetitive, so I would suggest listening to a story or two between other books.

    Publisher's Summary:
As a SEAL on combat deployment in Iraq, Mike Ritland saw a military working dog in action and instantly knew he found his true calling. While the SEAL teams had used dogs in the past, they never had dogs trained specifically by SEALs, for SEALs. To fill this void, Ritland started his own company after he retired, training and supplying dogs for the West Coast SEAL teams. He knew that less than 1% of all working dogs had what it takes to contribute to the success of our nations elite combat units.
He searched the globe for animals who fit this specific profile. These specialized canines had to pass rigorous selection tests before their serious training could begin. The results were a revelation: highly trained working dogs capable of handling both detection and apprehension work in the most extreme environments and the tensest of battlefield conditions. Though fiercely aggressive and athletic, these dogs develop a close bond with the handlers they work side by side with and the other team members. Truly integrating themselves into their units, these K9 warriors are much like their human counterparts - unwavering in their devotion to duty, strong enough and tough enough to take it to the enemy through pain, injury, or fear.
For the first time ever, listeners get an inside look at these elite K9 warriors - who they are, how they are trained, and the extreme missions they undertake saving countless lives asking for little in the way of reward. From detecting explosives to eliminating the bad guys, these powerful dogs are also some of the smartest and most highly skilled working animals on the planet.
    Members Reviews:
A unique story written and read very well
This book is definitely worth every penny. It delivers a unique story that is both written and read very well. I'm really not sure why one of the other reviewers says this is a boring history book. There is some history in the book, but(as the author states) it really serves the listener, as to really understand what goes into the "making" of these dogs, you need to know some of "military-dog" related history. But this book is by no means only this(history). It delivers exactly what the title says, giving many different accounts/stories of the dogs and their SEAL handlers, both state side and down-range. And, just as the books title states, you also get some of the authors background along with detailed accounts of his training of the dogs as well as working them.
The narrator of the book(Jeff Gurner) does a great job reading, putting just the right amount of emotion into it. Mr.Hurner has also clearly done his "homework", since he pronounces the military-terms correctly. I point this out because, most unfortunately other "Navy-Seal" book narrators have not.
