    Publisher's Summary:
Dr. Jan Pol is not your typical veterinarian. Born and raised on a dairy farm in the Netherlands, he is the star of Nat Geo Wild's hit show The Incredible Dr. Pol and has been treating animals in rural Michigan since the 1970s. Dr. Pol's 20,000-plus patients have ranged from white mice to 2,600-pound horses and everything in between. From the time he was 12 years old and helped deliver a litter of piglets on his family's farm to the incredible moments captured on his hit TV show, Dr. Pol has amassed a wealth of stories of what it's like caring for this menagerie of animals. He has established himself as an empathetic yet no-nonsense vet who isn't afraid to make the difficult decisions in order to do what's best for his patients - and their hard-working owners. Reminiscent of the classic books of James Herriot, Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow is a charming, fascinating, and funny memoir that will delight animal lovers everywhere.

Definitely going to listen to again!
I love the TV show so I figured I'd be entertained by the book, but let me tell you it exceeded my expectations. I loved all the stories most of all, but it was also cool how Dr. Pol got candid and talked about some behind the scenes stuff. I liked how he was honest about how he felt and why when he talked about being reported for treatment another vet thought was wrong. I also liked how he said multiple times that animals are not like humans and should not be treated like humans. it sounds weird out of context, so have a listen and see what he's talking about. most importantly I love how Dr. Pol loves animals and how it really does show in all his stories. I definitely recommend this book for a fun and sometimes educational read!
    Dr. Pol
Stories and opinions of the kind TV vet.
Book sounded like him, even though it was not in his voice.
enjoyable to listen and learn more about him, his family and of course the animals.
What a breath of fresh air Dr Pol is!
This is at least my fourth listen to the book. I wish I had access to NatG these days. I miss the show.
    Good wholesome real life story.
Loved hearing about Dr Pol's real life. We have truly enjoyed hearing it while we travel around doing errands. More
People should love their jobs so -
    Perfect for a pre-vet student
As someone that is pursuing a career as a DVM- like the show, this book offers a good depth of the profession. It's cool to here about Dr. Pol and his life.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Soon after his birthmother contacted him for the first time at the age of thirty-nine, adoptee Gary L. Stewart decided to search for his biological father. His quest would lead him to a horrifying truth and force him to reconsider everything he thought he knew about himself and his world.
Written with award-winning author and journalist Susan Mustafa, The Most Dangerous Animal of All tells the story of Stewarts decade-long hunt. While combing through government records and news reports and tracking down relatives and friends, Stewart turns up a host of cluesincluding forensic evidencethat conclusively identify his father as the Zodiac Killer, one of the most notorious and elusive serial murderers in history.
For decades, the Zodiac Killer has captivated Americas imagination. His ability to evade capture while taunting authorities made him infamous. The vicious specificity of his crimes terrified Californians before the Manson murders and after, and shocked a culture enamored with the ideals of the dawning Age of Aquarius. To this day, his ciphers have baffled detectives and amateur sleuths, and his identity remains one of the twentieth centurys great unsolved mysteries.
The Most Dangerous Animal of All reveals the name of the Zodiac for the very first time. Mustafa and Stewart construct a chilling psychological profile of Stewarts father: as a boy with disturbing fixations, a frustrated intellectual with pretensions to high culture, and an inappropriate suitor and then jilted lover unable to process his rage. At last, all the questions that have surrounded the case for almost fifty years are answered in this riveting narrative. The result is a singular work of true crime at its finesta compelling, unbelievable true story told with the pacing of a page-turning novelas well as a sensational and powerful memoir.

    Wow!
If you could sum up The Most Dangerous Animal of All in three words, what would they be?
    Fascinating story!
    Any additional comments?
I thought this book was amazing. I loved the dry yet emotional voice of Gary, as he went over the story and facts. I got completely hooked and was fascinated the entire way through. I'd read about the Zodiac years ago and saw the Hollywood movie. This is by far the most convincing story I've heard.
    Interesting story, passionately read
An interesting story, a bit laborious at times. Mostly it is a story of one man's dogged determination of personal discovery. Is Gary Stewarts' father really the Zodiac killer? Maybe.
Few authors ought to read their own books, with few notable exceptions, and honestly in the beginning Gary's reading annoying. But after awhile Gary's reading grew on me.
This is a deeply personal story and he conveys as much emotion with tone as does the words. By the end, I rather liked the addition.
    Very Compelling Story and Evidence
Would you listen to The Most Dangerous Animal of All again? Why?
I am re-listening to the book already after just finishing it.
What did you like best about this story?
    The compelling story and evidence.
    Any additional comments?
I just finished the audio version of Garys and Susans book. They did a fantastic job of telling Garys life and research. The evidence is extremely compelling.

  • Company Man Audiobook by John Rizzo

    Title: Company Man
Subtitle: Thirty Years of Controversy and Crisis in the CIA
    Author: John Rizzo
    Narrator: Pete Larkin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-13-14
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 80 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1975, fresh out of law school and working a numbing job at the Treasury Department, John Rizzo took "a total shot in the dark" and sent his résumé to the Central Intelligence Agency. He had no notion that more than 30 years later, after serving under 11 CIA directors and seven presidents, he would become a notorious public figure - a symbol and a victim of the toxic winds swirling in post-9/11 Washington. From serving as the point person answering for the Iran-Contra scandal to approving the rules that govern waterboarding and other "enhanced interrogation techniques", John Rizzo witnessed and participated in virtually all of the significant operations of the CIA's modern history.
In Company Man, Rizzo charts the CIA's evolution from shadowy entity to an organization exposed to new laws, rules, and a seemingly never-ending string of public controversies. Rizzo offers a direct window into the CIA in the years after the 9/11 attacks, when he served as the agency's top lawyer, with oversight of actions that remain the subject of intense debate today. In Company Man, Rizzo is the first CIA official to ever describe what "black sites" look like from the inside and he provides the most comprehensive account ever written of the "torture tape" fiasco surrounding the interrogation of Al Qaeda suspect Abu Zubaydah and the birth, growth, and death of the enhanced interrogation program.
Spanning more than three decades, Company Man is the most authoritative insider account of the CIA ever written - a groundbreaking, timely, and remarkably candid history of American intelligence.
    Critic Reviews:
"As insider looks go, this one is about as close-up as you can get." (
    Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
The real CIA, from the inside, no punches pulled
Company Man should be read at two levels, and is successful at both. First, it's a memoir of the CIA's chief lawyer (General Counsel) and his 30-plus years worth of stories, impressions, and characterizations of people he met (Presidents, Secretaries, CIA Directors and many more). As a lawyer, he was often at the center of CIA's most public successes and failures, and everything in between. Note the emphasis on the word "public." All Agency retirees (and indeed, anyone leaving CIA's employ for any reason) is legally obligated (by contract) to submit any written material to a review board to check for classified material, which is usually not permitted. So this is not a journalistic tell-all. But it provides an accurate, honest, and surprisingly well-written view into the organization from the late 1970s through the mid-2000s. If you're a fan of such memoirs, this is for you.
The second level is as a defense of Rizzo's (and the Agency's as a whole) actions during the "torture controversy." If you believe that the "Extended Interrogation Techniques" as described in the press, and in the book as well, are torture and should never have been countenanced, you will find much to disagree with. If you're on Rizzo's side, that the techniques, while most unsettling and problematic, were not torture and were legal (i.e., approved by the government process that was used by all executive agencies to determine legality), then you'll be cheering him on.

Length: 5 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-06-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 460 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Asa Akira (28) has already had an extremely unusual life. Educated at the United Nations International School in Manhattan, she soon was earning a good living by stripping and working as a dominatrix at a sex dungeon. Akira has now built up a reputation for being of the most popular, hardworking, and extreme actors in the business, winning dozens of awards for her 330+ movies, including her number-one best-selling adult film series Asa Akira Is Insatiable.
In Insatiable, Akira recounts her extraordinary life in chapters that are hilarious, shocking, and touching. In a wry, conversational tone, she talks about her experiences shoplifting and doing drugs while in school, her relationships with other porn stars (she is married to one) and with the industry at large, and her beliefs about women and sexuality. Insatiable is filled with Akiras unusual and often highly amusing anecdotes, including her visit to a New Hampshire sex shop run by a mother and son.
In a world where porn is increasingly becoming part of the mainstream, Akira is one of very few articulate voices writing from the inside. She has something important, controversial, and astonishingly interesting to say about sex and its central role in our lives and culture.
    Members Reviews:
    Entertaining. Exactly what you'd expect.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Depends on the friend... The book is the very explicit story of a major porn star.
Would you be willing to try another book from Asa Akira? Why or why not?
I doubt it. Kind of seems like she'd be a one trick pony book wise.
What does Asa Akira bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She reads well and expressively. She'd probably be a pretty ok actress. I believe she likes what she does. I think some of it was just sort of trying to pander to her fans and not really genuine. I found it kind of um... patronizing? but overall ok.
Was Insatiable worth the listening time?
eh It was OK. It had some funny parts.
    Any additional comments?
    eh...
Very graphic biography, needed more editing but ok
As you can see from this blog I am a little fascinated by porn. I still watch (though not as much, I'm 40 as I write this and I find usually it just doesn't do much for me, no substitute for the real thing :) I think the fact that I had never seen any of Asa's movies proves that I'm not much into porn the past few years, still I was interested enough to get this from Audible (with the monthly credit system I just go by ratings, interest and length).
The book starts out with a description of a hard core sex scene from a porn movie (I tried to figure out which one I'll admit, but the answer was nowhere to be found, I might e-mail her and ask). Asa has a nice speaking voice and she can describe a sex scene well but that's not the makings of a good biography. I found that the chapters which focus on her childhood, teenage and pre-porn years were the worst in the book.
Obviously it's very hard to relate to a porn star (unless you're in the industry of course, or lead a really wild life) and you get the impression that her childhood and early teenage years were a mess, filled with crime (shoplifting for years she says), drugs, sex (she gave her first blowjob at 13, which I think is too young) and even a creepy tale of her babysitter molesting her at a young age.

    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 432 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
From the popular sidekick on the Guinness World Record-breaking Adam Carolla Show comes this candid, comical, and uplifting memoir of the author's courageous battle and recovery.
At 30 years old Bryan Bishops life was right on track: as the sidekick on The Adam Carolla Show, his career was taking off and, newly engaged, his personal life was soaring to new heights. Then he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.
Suddenly Bryans promising future was looking at a troubling schedule of radiation and chemotherapy. But having found refuge in comedy, "Bald Bryan" recounts his alternately heartbreaking and hysterical experience of cancer treatment and recovery, from writing his will with the bravado of a pulp novelist, to taking chemo in a strip club, to achieving his life-long dream of getting another woman in the shower with him and his wife (even if it was only for physical therapy). These and other charmingly twisted scenes make the serious truly a laughing matter. Now four years since his initial diagnosis, Bryan celebrates how his aggressive treatment shrunk his tumor and gave him a new lease on life.
Through odds and obstacles, blunders and dilemmas, Bryan radiates through his narrative with wonder and humor. This profound, honest, and surprisingly funny recovery audiobook is a Cancer Schmancer for the Jimmy Kimmel Live! crowd.
Length: 8 hours and 01 minutes.
    Members Reviews:
Damn funny. Especially considering the subject.
I like books that make me laugh out loud in the car. "Shrinkage" got me on the first minute. The story is inspiring, but the writing is masterful comedy.
Bryan Bishop is the author as well as the reader and he is brilliant. His career as Adam Carolla's radio/podcast sidekick has trained him well. His timing is good and his voice is clear. The emotional side of the book is much more powerful knowing the man reading is the one that experienced the story first hand.
I listen to a lot of audio books. This is one of the very best.
Great - even for those who don't know Adam Corolla
A great read. Let me begin by saying I had to Google Adam Carolla. I generally don't read books about people with terrible diseases but happened to listen to an excerpt and liked what I heard. So, even though I had no idea about this author's work in the entertainment industry, I truly loved this book. It doesn't sugar coat a battle with cancer but it is a great story about the power of family, related and not, in difficult times. It is honest, well written, well read and, dare I say, a fun read? So, I can only imagine how fans would enjoy it! And after reading the book, I am now both a Bryan Bishop and Adam Carolla fan. So, maybe now I should listen to the show?
    So VERY excellent!
What made the experience of listening to Shrinkage the most enjoyable?
Listening to the Adam Carolla show for many, many years, I was already familiar with Brian as a extremely intelligent and quick member of the show. I remember hearing and feeling the struggle with his health from the initial onset. This book is such a beautiful exploration of such a tragic and aggressive time. Excellent!
Almost feel guilty using a credit
I laughed and cried so many times. Adam only makes me laugh so more bang for your buck. Thanks fir sharing your story Bryan.

    Title: Cathedral of the Wild
    Subtitle: An African Journey Home
    Author: Boyd Varty
    Narrator: Boyd Varty
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-11-14
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 166 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Boyd Varty had an unconventional upbringing. He grew up on Londolozi Game Reserve in South Africa, a place where man and nature strive for balance, where perils exist alongside wonders. Founded more than 80 years ago as a hunting ground, Londolozi was transformed into a nature reserve beginning in 1973 by Vartys father and uncle, visionaries of the restoration movement. But it wasnt just a sanctuary for the animals; it was also a place for ravaged land to flourish again and for the human spirit to be restored. When Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years of imprisonment, he came to the reserve to recover.
Cathedral of the Wild is Vartys memoir of his life in this exquisite and vast refuge. At Londolozi, Varty gained the confidence that emerges from living in Africa. "We came out strong and largely unafraid of life," he writes, "with the full knowledge of its dangers." It was there that young Boyd and his equally adventurous sister learned to track animals, raised leopard and lion cubs, followed their larger-than-life uncle on his many adventures filming wildlife, and became one with the land. Varty survived a harrowing black mamba encounter, a debilitating bout with malaria, even a vicious crocodile attack, but his biggest challenge was a personal crisis of purpose. An intense spiritual quest takes him across the globe and back again - to reconnect with nature and "rediscover the track".
Cathedral of the Wild is a story of transformation that inspires a great appreciation for the beauty and order of the natural world. With conviction, hope, and humor, Varty makes a passionate claim for the power of the wild to restore the human spirit.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is a gorgeous, lyrical, hilarious, important book. Boyd Varty is as brilliant a storyteller and as kind a companion as youll ever meet. He describes a life that has been spent forging a new way of thinking and being, in harmony with both Nature writ large and the human nature that is you. Read this and you may find yourself instinctively beginning to heal old wounds: in yourself, in others, and just maybe in the cathedral of the wild that is our true home." (Martha Beck, author of Finding Your Own North Star)
"Cathedral of the Wild is the captivating story of the joyful, occasionally terrifying, but always interesting life of Boyd Varty. It is also a tale of healing, and of one familys passion to restore our broken connection to nature. Be prepared to fall in love with Varty, his sister, his parents, his uncle, the ideals they fiercely hold to protect the African bush, and the wild animals and people that surround them. With his campfire wit and poets ear, Varty is a wonderful new voice in adventure writing." (Susan Casey, author of The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean)
"[An] intense, insightful memoir that brings together several wise observations about the relationship between nature and humanity.... Varty faces his own trials...leading to a spiritual renewal that elevates this memoir above the usual wilderness narrative." (Publishers Weekly)

    Publisher: Random House Audio

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Told by a former high-level member of the Peoples Temple and Jonestown survivor, Seductive Poison is the "truly unforgettable" (Kirkus Review) story of how one woman was seduced by one of the most notorious cults in recent memory and how she found her way back to sanity.
From Waco to Heaven's Gate, the late 20th century saw its share of cult tragedies. But none was quite so dramatic or compelling as the Jonestown massacre of 1978, in which the Reverend Jim Jones and 913 of his disciples perished. Deborah Layton had been a member of the Peoples Temple for seven years when she departed for Jonestown, Guyana, the promised land nestled deep in the South American jungle.
When she arrived, however, Layton saw that something was seriously wrong. Jones constantly spoke of a revolutionary mass suicide, and Layton knew only too well that he had enough control over the minds of the Jonestown residents to carry it out. But her pleas for help - and her sworn affidavit to the U.S. government - fell on skeptical ears.
In this very personal account, Layton opens up the shadowy world of cults and shows how anyone can fall under their spell. Seductive Poison is both an unflinching historical document and a riveting story of intrigue, power, and murder.

    Brilliant, Haunting, Chilling
Would you listen to Seductive Poison again? Why?
Definitely! For years I have been curious about Jonestown - more about the people who followed Jim Jones to their deaths than about the man himself. A couple of years back I read Julia Scheeres' "A Thousand Lives" (a brilliant book in its own right), a thorough journalistic look at Jones and his followers. Deborah Layton laid herself bare in "Seductive Poison," detailing how she herself got drawn in to Jones' orbit, her rise to power in Peoples' Temple, her disillusion, escape, and putting her life back together.
I must also say that Kathe Mazur's performance was superb! Her depiction of Jones - in either his caring or brutal persona - was chilling and believable. Deborah's fear, sorrow, and fumbling are portrayed realistically.
What other book might you compare Seductive Poison to and why?
it is a great companion piece to "A Thousand Lives". ATL is more journalistic and deals more with the suicides themselves; "Seductive Poison" is more personal, about one woman's own journey of self-discovery and deprogramming.

Good book but theatrical music unecessary
Good book I've read before but would rather have not had the theatrical music in background... just distracting.
    REFUELED
If you are not a believer you take a terrible risk in not surrendering your life to the Father. I enjoyed the read.
