    Publisher's Summary:
A passionate naturalist explores what it's really like to be an animal - by living like them.
How can we ever be sure that we really know the other? To test the limits of our ability to inhabit lives that are not our own, Charles Foster set out to know the ultimate other: the nonhumans, the beasts. And to do that, he tried to be like them, choosing a badger, an otter, a fox, a deer, and a swift. He lived alongside badgers for weeks, sleeping in a sett in a Welsh hillside and eating earthworms, learning to sense the landscape through his nose rather than his eyes. He caught fish in his teeth while swimming like an otter; rooted through London garbage cans as an urban fox; was hunted by bloodhounds as a red deer, nearly dying in the snow. And he followed the swifts on their migration route over the Strait of Gibraltar, discovering himself to be strangely connected to the birds.
A lyrical, intimate, and completely radical look at the life of animals - human and other - Being a Beast mingles neuroscience and psychology, nature writing and memoir to cross the boundaries separating the species. It is an extraordinary journey full of thrills and surprises, humor and joy. And, ultimately, it is an inquiry into the human experience in our world, carried out by exploring the full range of the life around us.

Title: I Do It with the Lights On
Subtitle: And 10 More Discoveries on the Road to a Blissfully Shame-Free Life
    Author: Whitney Way Thore
    Narrator: Whitney Way Thore
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 7 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-07-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 388 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
From the star of TLC's My Big Fat Fabulous Life and the YouTube sensation "A Fat Girl Dancing" comes an empowering memoir about letting go of your limitations and living the life you deserve. Right now.
Whitney Way Thore stands five feet two inches tall and weighs well over 300 pounds, and she is totally, completely, and truly...happy. But she wasn't always the vivacious, confident woman you see on TV. Growing up as a dancer, Whitney felt the pressure to be thin, a desire that grew into an obsession as she got older. From developing an eating disorder as a teenager to extreme weight gain in college to her ongoing struggle with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), Whitney reveals her fight to overcome the darkest moments in her life. She holds nothing back, opening up about the depths of her depression as well as her resilience in the face of constant harassment and mistreatment. Now Whitney is on top of the world and taking no BS (body shame, of course). And she's sharing the steps she took to get there and the powerful message behind her successful No Body Shame campaign. She even reveals her favorite F word (it's probably not what you think), the thrill of doing it with the lights on, and the story behind the "Fat Girl Dancing" video that started it all.
Exuberant and utterly honest, I Do It with the Lights On is the inspiring story of how Whitney finally discovered her fabulousness when she stepped off the scale and into her life, embracing herself unconditionally - body, heart, and soul.
    Critic Reviews:
Whitneys story is one of radical vulnerability. She is a vibrant example of what it means to choose confidence when insecurity beckons from every corner. She is cool, funny, and shameless - in the best possible way." (Kelsey Miller, author of Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting & Got a Life)
Soaring above expectations, I Do It with the Lights On delves into the complicated relationship between a woman and her body. With her trademark charisma, Whitney emerges triumphant, plucking from the mire some of the most important realizations one can hope to have. If you have a body, this memoir is a must-read." (Linda Bacon, PhD)

You don't have to be fat to love this message!
Great story and well preformed. Whitney is a very intelligent woman. I found myself smiling many times, and even got teary eyes once or twice. I've recommended this book to many women in my life already. Hell, men should read it too!
    Amazing.
Whitney is a joy to listen to, with her Greensboro background not far from my own (my grandmama lives in Black Mountain!) and her constant sense of humor. Listening to her story is hard at times, making your heart ache with sympathy pains, but she makes it feel like girl's night, laughing at all the right places and righteous fury at others.
Girl, thank you. Thank you for understanding and for being a champion of body positivity in all the right ways and for DANCING.
Wise words from a brave woman
I love books read by the author. And I found her story typical of so many of us. Kudos, Whitney, for learning to accept yourself. Many people of various sizes could benefit from your insight.
    Loved it!
What a refreshing new view on being accepting of self and others no matter what size we are.

    Publisher: Pan Macmillan Publishers Ltd.
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 84 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Mark Webber was at the centre of one of the most captivating chapters in the history of Formula One. In 2010, while racing for Red Bull, he and his teammate, Sebastian Vettel, went head to head for the world championship. There could be only one winner.
Since retiring from Formula One, Mark has concentrated on endurance racing, including the legendary Le Mans 24-hour race. He hit the front pages of newspapers around the world in December 2014 when he slammed into the barricades in the final round of the FIA World Endurance Championship in South America and was lucky to escape with his life.
But the controversy of his relationship on and off the track with Vettel, who went on to win multiple world titles, has never been far beneath the surface. Here, for the first time, Webber tells the inside story of one of Formula One's most intriguing battles - it is a story that goes to the heart of why the sport is loved by millions of fans around the world.
In his trademark straight-talking, no-nonsense style, Mark reveals his amazing life on and off the Formula One racetrack, from his first taste of karting to his F1 debut in 2002, from scoring Minardi's first points in three years at the Australian Grand Prix through to his first win with Red Bull at the 2009 German Grand Prix and the year he should have been crowned world champion. Mark Webber's journey to the top of Formula One was every bit as determined and committed as his racing. Aussie Grit is his searingly honest story.
Includes a foreword by Formula One legend Sir Jackie Stewart.

this story change my perspective of Mark Webber.
I used to really like Mark Webber, now I realize he is just a dumb jock. he blames everyone else for his performances and wouldn't be in the racing position he has been if it wasn't for his partner Ann. the story definitely was not written by him.
    great for any racing fan
great insight into the f1 machine seen through the eyes of one of the best drivers ever
A real look inside a top level drivers life
a great account of the journey Mark took to reach the top and stay there. A true class act and inspiration to sport lovers. The book is delivered in a way that relates to the reader and really brings to light who the man under the helmet is. Great read!
Really fun to hear the inside story and a holistic view
I really enjoyed how this taught me a lot about F1 that I didn't know and in fact, the sporting press had indeed gotten wrong. I hope at some point he updates it to include his WEC overall victory. Fair and balanced, with admissions of his own faults along the way. If only it was narrated by him, but eventually you forget about that :)
    Avid F1 fan; loved it!
I follow F1 very closely and started watching right around the time Mark got in to F1. It was a fantastic book! It was neat to hear familiar names in the current F1 era and about Mark's pre-F1 journey.

    Lack of emotions ,
The stories are very good, but the narration is too poor of emotions, I believe these women deserve more emotion.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 386 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Joseph W. Naus was living the American dream. He'd survived a brutal childhood, graduated from Pepperdine Law School, and become a successful attorney. Then one night his American dream life became a nightmare when his sex and alcohol addictions collided and exploded.
"On Tuesday I was a respected civil trial lawyer making six figures. On Wednesday I woke up handcuffed to a hospital bed, charged with attempted murder...and then it got worse."
Straight Pepper Diet is a book about surviving one's own wreckage. It's harrowing, sometimes hilarious, and surprisingly hope-filled.
    Members Reviews:
    Riveting, Relevant, and Raw
What made the experience of listening to Straight Pepper Diet the most enjoyable?
Joseph's transformation from degenerate to spiritually enlightened is inspiring. He is so honest, so vulnerable and open to judgment, it's truly admirable. It doesn't matter that he'll disgust you at first because you will be able to empathize with the circumstances that led him to deplorable behavior, and you will be proud of him when he frees himself from it.
What other book might you compare Straight Pepper Diet to and why?
I've read other memoirs about addiction and transformation, but nothing like this. SPD made me feel a gamut of positive and negative emotions, which is what books should do.
What does Joseph W. Naus bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Having the story read by the author makes him feel very real, like I was one of his friends or exes. It was great to have his voice contribute to the overall picture of the narrator. His honest thoughts in his own voice maintain the story's authenticity and, again, make him real and likable.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    YES
    Any additional comments?
I expected to hate this book. I bought it because I was married to someone like Joseph and I wanted to understand him better. In the end, I don't know if it helped me with that--my ex may very well be a sociopath and Joseph is not-- but I found value in the story anyway. I would read it again and strongly recommend it if you like memoirs.
Entertaining read but skeptical of the truth
No doubt this story is a crazy one but the details he goes into make me question whether it's the truth or simply his fantasy becoming real in his own mind. The details of exactly what people said 10 years ago while under the influence makes me wonder as I know there is no way I could recollect such things. He also describes himself as picking up women constantly, a bad ass in martial arts, and successful attorney from day one. Then downplays it with some self-deprecating story. Totally a "humblebrag" so not a big fan of Joseph the person. Yet the story was a fun (probably not the right word) read even if I thought it contained a lot of fiction. Oh, and the music when he was about to have sex was annoying.
    Totally engrossing memoir of addiction
What made the experience of listening to Straight Pepper Diet the most enjoyable?
The straight drive through this turbulent and often terrifying story. Great writing that rings astonishingly of truth.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
When all seems lost, where can hope be found?
Katherine and Jay married right after college and sought adventure far from home in Los Angeles, CA. As they pursued their dreams, they planted their lives in the city and in their church community. Their son, James, came along unexpectedly in the fall of 2007, and just six months later, everything changed in a moment for this young family.
On April 21, 2008, as James slept in the other room, Katherine collapsed, suffering a massive brain stem stroke without warning. Miraculously, Jay came home in time and called for help. Katherine was immediately rushed into brain microsurgery, though her chance of survival was slim.
As the sun rose the next morning, the surgeon proclaimed that Katherine had survived the removal of part of her brain, though her future recovery was completely uncertain. Yet in that moment, there was a spark of hope. Through 40 days on life support in the ICU and nearly two years in full-time brain rehab, that spark of hope was fanned into flame.
Defying every prognosis with grit and grace, Katherine and Jay, side by side, struggled to regain a life for Katherine as she relearned to talk and eat and walk. Katherine returned home with a severely disabled body but a completely renewed purpose; she and Jay committed to celebrating this gift of a second chance by embracing life fully, even though that life looked very different from what they could have ever imagined. In the midst of continuing hardships and struggles in both body and mind, Katherine and Jay found what we all long to find: hope. Hope that heals the most broken places: our souls.
An excruciating yet beautiful road to recovery has led the Wolf family to their new normal, in which almost every moment of life is marked with the scars of that fateful April day in 2008. Now, eight years later, Katherine and Jay are stewarding their story of suffering, restoration, and Christ-centered hope in this broken world through their ministry Hope Heals.

    Helpful, thought provoking book.
One of my favorite attributes of the book Is the raw honesty this couple exhibit. They are not self seeking, but they are real. If you think you're having it tough, and you probably are, this is the book for you. I gave it 5 stars because it kept me engaged throughout the reading, and I don't how how they could have improved on it.
Powerful, intimate, tear evoking, inspiring! ! !
This book, biography, was so powerful for me. I too have suffered many of the same tragedies. So many of the same emotions. This book was healing in so many ways. Katherine is such a beautiful soul. Suffering well is a blessing. I never understood why people would complement me for the what I have gone thru and kept my spirt up. I would this, what the heck are they talking about? I would say to my husband "Why are they saying these things? All I have done is stay alive and I had no choice in that." Now I understand, I have inspired people by not being angry, sad, bitter, well at least not often. I love hearing from Jay's point of view. Both Jay and Katherine are so elequint. To be ably to articulate the horrific events and emotions puts so much perspective and validation to the way my family has felt. Knowing that I, my family, Jay and Katherine are God's children.

    Title: Worth Dying For
Subtitle: A Navy Seal's Call to a Nation

    Narrator: Rorke Denver
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 50 mins

    Release date: 04-05-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 699 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In a fast-paced and action-packed narrative, Navy SEAL commander Rorke Denver tackles the questions that have emerged about America's past decade at war - from what makes a hero to why we fight and what it does to us. Heroes are not always the guys who jump on grenades. Sometimes, they are the snipers who decide to hold their fire, the wounded operators who find fresh ways to contribute, or the wives who keep the families together back home. Even a SEAL commander - especially a SEAL commander - knows that. But what's a hero, really? What do we have a right to expect from our heroes? How should we hold them accountable?
Amid all the loose talk of heroes, these questions are seldom asked. As a SEAL commander, Rorke Denver is uniquely qualified to answer questions about what makes a hero or a leader, why men kill, how best to serve your country, how battlefield experiences can elevate us, and most importantly, why we fight and what it does for and to us.
In Worth Dying For, Denver tackles many of these issues by sharing his personal experiences from the forefront of war today. Denver applies some of his SEAL-sense to nine big-picture, news-driven questions of war and peace, in a way that appeals to all sides of the public conversation. By broadening the issues, sharing his insights, and achieving what civilian political leaders have been utterly unable to, Denver eloquently shares answers to America's most burning questions about war, heroism, and what it all means for America's future.
    Members Reviews:
    An Analysis of Recent History
This book is not a review of war memories but an analysis of the current condition of American. I was impressed by the wide range of reading Denver has accomplished. Denver provides a history of the Navy SEAL program along with a review of the training and goals of training. The SEAL training emphasizes teamwork and leadership skills and to never quit.
As I read Denvers list of requirement of what makes a hero, I could think of a number of people I know that fit the requirement. Somehow this made me look at society in a different way. I found that I read this book in sections as I had to stop and ruminate on what I had read. Denver makes one stop and analyzes the country from your own viewpoint.
I think this is a must read book for everyone but particularly for politicians. He reveals that we have a leadership vacuum in this country. In the last part of the book he discuss how the average citizen has grown soft over the years as life is easy as compared to 50 or more years ago. He thinks people need to overcome challenges and difficulties to become better citizens. I was impressed with his analysis of Americans military, civilian and political disconnect and he gives suggestions as how to correct it.
This book is well written and easy to read as well as provides food for thought. Denver is a decorated Navy SEAL. The author did a good job narrating the book.
I didn't want it to end.
What made the experience of listening to Worth Dying For the most enjoyable?
There's just something about getting advice from a Navy SEAL in his own words and voice that makes it impossible not to pay attention to what he's saying.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 155 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A moving and revealing exploration of Hasidic life and one man's struggles with faith, family, and community.
Shulem Deen was raised to believe that questions are dangerous. As a member of the Skverers, one of the most insular Hasidic sects in the US, he knows little about the outside world - only that it is to be shunned. His marriage at 18 is arranged, and several children soon follow.
Deen's first transgression - turning on the radio - is small, but his curiosity leads him to the library and, later, the Internet. Soon he begins a feverish inquiry into the tenets of his religious beliefs until, several years later, his faith unravels entirely. Now a heretic, he fears being discovered and ostracized from the only world he knows. His relationship with his family at stake, he is forced into a life of deception and begins a long struggle to hold on to those he loves most: his five children.
In All Who Go Do Not Return, Deen bravely traces his harrowing loss of faith while offering an illuminating look at a highly secretive world.
    Members Reviews:
An eloquent and fascinating look into a secretive world
Shulum Deen is a very gifted writer and his reading was both powerful and pleasant. He was telling a story, not reciting a text. Ironically, it was probably the upbringing that he escaped that allowed him to craft such a beautiful story as he comes from a culture with a strong textual and oral tradition. His story is much more of a Bildungsroman (personal growth tale) than a juicy tell-all. I highly recommend this book.
    Gorgeously written, fascinating
Bravo! I couldn't (in the audio sense) put it down, and hope for a sequel. I recommend this eye-opening, poignant, heartfelt, honest memoir wholeheartedly.
    Very well done
    Any additional comments?
I'd quibble with the Publisher's Summary on the Audible page, because I didn't come away from the book feeling like Shulem was "raised to believe that questions are dangerous."
It sounded/read to me that he chose, for very personal reasons, in his teen and early adult years, to join a community that believed that questions are dangerous. And that this was the community he was married and had a family in.
The trajectory of his loss of belief is a very tragically beautiful read, as he desperately looks for answers to the questions that his community doesn't want him to ask. He seems to have specific answers in mind that he needs to hear, and when he doesn't get the answers he wants, he takes it very hard.
The tragedy is in the community's response, and what happened with his exwife and his children in response to his personal evolution. The beauty is in his birth family's (his mother's and his siblings') unconditional love and acceptance, as they remain believers (notably not in the same community that he chose to live in).
The audio performance is very well done.
    Poignant,
Very compelling, descriptive and authentic account of his formation in and then abandonment of his faith. He is sensitive to those he left, and narration was good.
    very moving book
this book was very insightful and moving. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to read it again right away.

From the beloved #1 New York Times best-selling author comes an intimate look at the driving forces in one man's life.
With Augusten's unique and singular observations and his own unabashed way of detailing both the horrific and the humorous, Lust and Wonder is a hilariously frank audiobook memoir that his legions of fans have been waiting for. His story began in Running with Scissors, endured through Dry, and continues with this memoir, the capstone to the life of Augusten Burroughs.
Funny, sweet, alarming, and ultimately, moving and tender, Lust & Wonder is an experience of an audiobook that will resonate with anyone who has loved and lost and loved again.
    Critic Reviews:
"Burroughs has lived this story, so his delivery perfectly matches the tone and pacing needed. Focusing on a series of failed relationships, Burroughs lets his voice rise in both tension and tenor as he analyzes the reasons, with help from analysis, that some relationships work and others are doomed by the personal quirks of both people." Relentlessly Tedious
What disappointed you about Lust & Wonder?
Let me preface this by saying that I was so excited to see a new Augusten Burroughs book coming out, that I actually put a note in my calendar to purchase this title on the release date. That said, this book was a huge disappointment. This book reads like a series of long journal entries, but not in an intimate or entertaining way. Rather, it feels like the author sits in front of his computer all day (he actually admits as much) and then writes down EVERY SINGLE THOUGHT that comes into his mind. Some of it is funny, mostly because the author is a very funny writer, but much of it feels like a big, "So what?" For example, long sections detailing conversations about nothing that go nowhere. Dog walks, boring dates, random thoughts -- all of these are given equal weight. Additionally, there is much too much here that is rehashed from previous books, notably "DRY."
What was most disappointing about Augusten Burroughss story?
Toward the end, he writes that he has squandered much of his fortune on online shopping. This is funny (for the reader) and also well within bounds for the Augusten Burroughs many of us have grown to love over the years. BUT long before he revealed his financial problems, I found myself wondering if this book was simply a way for him to make a quick buck. There is simply no story here -- nothing at all that needs to be told.

    Publisher's Summary:
Filled with stories of strange medical cases and unforgettable patients culled from a 30-year career in medicine, Cook County ICU offers listeners a peek into the inner workings of a hospital. Author Cory Franklin, MD, who headed the hospital's intensive care unit from the 1970s through the 1990s, shares his most unique and bizarre experiences, including the deadly Chicago heatwave of 1995, treating the first AIDS patients in the country before the disease was diagnosed, the nurse with rare Munchausen syndrome, the only surviving ricin victim, and the professor with Alzheimer's hiding the effects of the wrong medication. Surprising, darkly humorous, heartwarming, and sometimes tragic, these stories provide a big-picture look at how the practice of medicine has changed over the years, making it a must-listen for patients, doctors, and anyone with an interest in medicine.
    Critic Reviews:
"Franklin provides an excellent firsthand perspective on life in the medical trenches." (

    Subtle, funny and compassionate
Doctor Franklin explains through stories of patients and himself or his colleagues, how Medicine has devolved from a covenant between patient and doctor, to a business, in which everybody is treated like "corn or coal". The writing is serene, but the subject makes the good doctor furious, and with a good reason. The hospitals where he once learned and practiced, places where doctors were proud of the virtue their trade represented, are now places where only one thing matters: money.
What a great read/listen. John Pruden does a good job of telling it all.
    Very impressive..
Made me laugh a lot, even though im not in the medical field, I have found this book exciting and had to listen in one sitting.. Definitely recommend it..
    Disappointing
Self indulgent, moderately interesting, anecdotes where the author is the falsely modest hero of each one.
    Basic
I would recommend this book to young adults considering a career in medicine; however, experienced practitioners who have likely experienced many of the same situations throughout their career or gain little insight.
    Worth a Listen!
What made the experience of listening to Cook County ICU the most enjoyable?
I really enjoyed listening to all the interesting cases that Dr. Franklin wrote about in his book, and the interplay between his work life and the affects (positive and challenging) it had/has on his personal life. Dr. Franklin is extremely honest about everything; this book isn't gory or disgusting, but it shows that doctors really are people and have strong feelings and emotional connection to their patients.
    Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite scene in this listen was when Dr. Franklin wrote about a patient he saw in the clinic who ran a barbecue restaurant during his career. The description of the emotional closeness of Dr. Franklin and his patient, whom he saw many times over the course of a few years, was beautiful. The patient would bring the doctor a container of barbecue ribs at each of his clinic appointments and, later, an annual barbecued turkey (!) each year at Thanksgiving.
