Sublime to the Ridiculous: A Poor Show from Yalom

I really enjoyed the first few stories of this book. However, I felt that it quickly degraded into a series of extremely flat, caricatured and fantasy stories, written in the third person, instead of from the usual vantage point of Yalom himself.

I felt the narration to be slightly off key in parts especially where the reader mimics the female voice. At this point, it felt as though he were mocking the characters - probably not what was intended.

The book, while sublime in parts, landed up giving me a rather tacky, lacklustre finish.

Having recently been introduced to Irvin Yaloms work, in particular the gift of therapy and liking his style and ease for understanding I thought I'd give this a go and I'm glad I did! Really insightful stories, that have allowed me to reflect more deeply on my own practice and have given me permission to be more authentic in my work. The guy who read the book was excellent, which can be rare on audio books of this nature. I wouldn't hesitate to listen to this book again, but for now, on to loves executioner

Fantastic- I did not want it to end

This audio is riveting. I felt that the beginning was slightly slow and I found it difficult to engage with- but it got better and better the more I listened to it. Not only did I find it interesting but I also found it educational especially since I am a trainee psychologist. I found the indirect and direct teaching Superb. I am looking forward to listening to his next story.

Rienhard Bonnke is one of the most interesting men I have ever read about, and I'm an avid reader. 18th Century industrialist, tech tycoons, heads of state, if it's a bio about someone who has done something, I want to read it. I've read this about 4 times, it's so good! I can't put it down. I've given it to my non-christian friends. It's an entertaining read from running from the Russians at the end of WWII, to being a white German preacher in Africa. If you need to feel encouraged, inspired, and ready to do something big with your life, try this book. It's great!

One of the best books I've ever read or listened to

Reinhart's

detail about the exciting event of happened over the last several decades is a riveting engaging and hard to put down. His personal insights and humility and transparency are so helpful to the readerI think this is a must for anyone who wants to really understand what God is doing today and how we can do the same.

Prepare to be inspired!

I have been deeply moved, encouraged, and propelled toward leading a life fully surrender to the Lord. I want to be both sensitive and obedient to the Holy Spirit like Bonnke does.

Nothing can compare to the satisfaction of staying the course and making impact for the Kingdom, and to witness the love and power that could flow through you and me, when we choose to stick with the calling of our lives!

A great book read by Bonnke, made me laugh and cry and determine to live a life like his!

interesting descriptions of the other side

The f-bombs detracted from the narrative, but I kind of understand where it will appeal to a different audience. Many of the descriptions match up with those in other books. Where physicist Tom Campbell will give descriptions that are scientific in his My Big Toe series, this book is definitely in layman's verbiage and in a story narrative that is easier listening.

I went back to listen to a portion of Tom Campbell's My Big Toe series Book 2 last night after finishing the Medhus' audio book My Life After Death to confirm my thoughts on this matching overlap - and yes - these books do have areas in common. But My Big Toe is a pop-the-hood-and-look-underneath-to-see-how-it-works version in a really lengthy scientific point of view and My Life After Death is a more relatable version for lay people who like to use words like Angel or Guide and get information quick and simple.

The generous number of descriptions in this audio book of creating your own reality also match closely with descriptions found in the Seth books. The descriptions of interactions with electrical equipment, such as telephones, or even iTunes, was fascinating - as was the explanation and discussion of EVP phenomena and how it works. The many varied descriptions of energy and how it is used is exceptionally good and understandable.

This book's strength is in the explanations of how things work on the other side, and how energetic interactions back with the physical work. It's a book worth another listen sometime in the future since there is so much detailed information.

This was such an amazing sharing. The first hour or so was a bit rough to listen to as it details the death of Erik in full sharing mode as is his style from his perspective but how awesome is it to have the perspective of one in the beyond. I have so much respect for Jaime and Elisa for being willing to bring this forth as that must have been so hard to do.

Book is nothing like the excerpt. Amazingly little insight into her own behaviors which she describes but doesn't reflect on.

A good reflection tool

I have mixed feelings about the book, the writer gives a clear description of her experience some of which resonated with me and helped me to reflect on my own experience, other's, not so much. While I have no wish to re-victimise the writer I did honestly get the sense that some parts of the story were dramatised or embellished, for example an account of a pool accident describes how her 7 year old (if I recall correctly?) daughter counted each gulp of water as she desperately tried to keep herself and her sister afloat, I found that implausible, in another part the writer discusses an entry in her daughter's diary, which I didn't feel needed to be shared publicly. All in all it was light on advice, but really helped me a lot and just 'nice' (though nothing nice about narcissism) to know other people are going through similar experiences and you're not alone.

Incredibly Insightful For A White Woman From The Suburbs

This book was so insightful to me as a white woman who knows nothing about the perspective of being black in this country. I feel naive to the inclusiveness I felt we all had, and ignorant to the issues black Americans have to deal with. Though it was sometimes hard for me to hear, I am thankful to Benjamin for having the courage to write it and teaching us that Jesus Christ is the only real way we are going to experience true change within ourselves. I wish ALL my friends and family, black and white, would read this book.

Where he talks about when he decided to have empathy for the cows he had lived off of for decades. The leather couch part was really surprising and beautiful.

I'm a Dawkins Groupie but...

... I had to hang in there before this memoir caught me up.

I am a huge fan of Richard Dawkins - just to be up front about that. But it took a bit of persistence to stay with this second half of his memoir. Rather than lay the book out chronologically, he laid it out in "topics." Unfortunately, his first topic was all about the various conferences and talks and other such events in which he had taken part. Except for his discussion of the Royal Society Christmas Lectures, this was fairly dry and uninteresting to me. I was about to give up on this book but then...

...the DH and I went to an appearance of his in Kansas City and were privileged to both attend a small reception for him beforehand (a fund-raiser for his Foundation for Reason and Science for which we paid a tidy sum - full disclosure) followed by his public appearance. where he discussed his book and told stories from it...

...so I decided to stick with the book and am now glad that I did.

I would recommend this audiobook to a friend who is fence-sitting on whether or not to buy the full audiobook of this memoir. I found the analysis helpful before I listened to the unabridged The Glass Castle. It decreased the likelihood of me getting lost or missing key things when I listened to the full book. The analysis made me more alert when listening to the audiobook and it enabled me to enjoy the book more as well as get more out of it. I highly recommend that you try Instaread summary and analysis before you listen to the book.

This was OK for summary but fell very short on analysis. I was expecting much more analysis of the book.

Rick Bragg IS the voice of the south I think. I have read all his books and he is in a class all his own. His love of his sweet mother is just put out there with no self-consciousness or unmanly shame! He knows where he came from and celebrates it with every story and word. The South IS unique and he shows us why and makes us chuckle at it. He takes you back to your grandma's front porch with an ice cold sweating glass of sweet tea in your hand. His sense of place is incomparable...you feel, smell, and taste the south ....and find it good.Thank you Rick.

I have written reviews for only 2 of the 300+ books in my audible library. One for the creative genius of Heller's Catch 22 and one for a book on the other end of the spectrum. I use books to help me go to sleep but it is now 2:30 AM and I have excitedly gotten up to write a review about this book.

It is about the south. But the layering of the words, the word combinations, the phrases the imaginary are genius. I want to collect each phrase, throw them in a sack, save them, and yet run forward to the next one to collect it as well- all like the cotton pickers who drug their sacks down the long rows collecting cotton boles.

Mr. Bragg- if you read these reviews- 'Saludo'! Your writing is the difference between spraying paint and brushing it on. Spraying delivers particles of spray that when thick enough form a covering on a surface like a film.
