Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Dead Will Tell comes a new short story offering a glimpse into Chief of Police Kate Burkholder's past and her Amish roots.
It's autumn in Painter's Mill, and 14-year-old Katie Burkholder has been tasked with picking apples in Zimmerman's Orchard with her brother. It's just another day filled with chores - until her best friend, Mattie, arrives to help. Somehow boredom transforms into fun and games whenever the girls are together. The innocent fun comes to an end when Billy Marquardt and his gang of friends interrupt. Katie is no prude, but she knows better than to associate with the older English boys, especially since they're known troublemakers.
Mattie has no such compunction. Thumbing her nose at the Ordnung and all of the Amish rules, she disappears into the old barn with Billy. Moments later the Zimmermans' barn is consumed by fire. Katie suspects Billy had something to do with the blaze, but he denies it. When the facts don't add up, Katie begins her own investigation - and she doesn't like what she finds. Will her friendship with Mattie survive the truth?

    An enjoyable glimpse into childhood...
Chief of Police Kate Burkholder grew up Amish â Painterâs Mill was her home town, and she lived with her Datt, Mamm, brother Joseph and sister Sarah where they worked the farm from early morning until late at night. When Katie was fourteen she and Joseph went to the nearby Zimmerman farm to pick apples for Mammâs cooking. With the arrival of Katieâs best friend Mattie, her day immediately looked brighter. But her Mamm and Datt didnât approve of her friendship with Mattie â she was a bad influence, a âwild childâ according to them.
The arrival in the orchard of the English boy Billy Marquardt made Katie uneasy, but Mattie was up for some fun. When they headed to the barn, Katie refused to follow â but she was worried for her friend. The ensuing fire which engulfed the barn had the police investigating Mattie, Billy and Katie â what would they find? Katie was sure her friend was innocent and she was determined to find the truth. But was there trouble ahead?
Seeds of Deception is a short story by Linda Castillo which is part of the Kate Burkholder series. Itâs an enjoyable little glimpse at part of the tough police chiefâs childhood, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love this authorâs work, and had no hesitation in purchasing it. Highly recommended.
Short Story View of Kate's Teenage Life
"Zimmerman's Orchard was the last place fourteen-year-old Katie Burkholder wanted to be, especially with her older brother, Jacob."
FINAL DECISION: An intriguing little story that gives more background and depth to Kate and her family and friends, this short story gives readers a glimpse into Kate's life as a young teenager.
THE STORY: Fourteen year old Amish Kate Burkholder is avoiding her chores with her best friend Mattie. When a barn burns, Kate is torn between the evidence and believing her best friend's version of events.
OPINION: This short story taking place in Kate's teenage years gives some interesting insights into Kate and her relationships with her Amish friends and family.

    Better than I expected
Normally there are one or two stories I like, but in this case I liked them all. Some were better than others but they were all interesting enough to listen to. The best collection of short stories I have listened to.
    Great Collection
I enjoyed listening to this collection of short stories that allowed me to see into the mind of the main characters. They grabbed my attention from beginning to end of each story. All of the performances of this collection were brilliantly executed.
    Dreadful
Was expecting murder mystery stories. Got strange boring stories. Very disappointed by this book. Wouldn't recommend.
    A bit dissappointed
I was enticed into reading this book by the free story which was superb. This volume has a half dozen good stories but the rest left me cold.
Best format for regular long distance travel
Thoroughly enjoyed the depth and range of stories, perfectly aligned with the dulcet tones of the narrators.
An absolute joy from beginning to end, including the last chapter, which gave us a sleek peak into the minds of the authors, none of whom sounded remotely psycho! Which begs the question, how do such placid minds write such twisted fiction.
worthy of a second, any third and fourth series, please.

    Release date: 09-13-16
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
From the celebrated author of You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine, a thought-provoking, often unsettling story collection that consists broadly of narrative diagrams of the three main stages in a human life: birth, life, and death.
Alexandra Kleeman's debut novel, You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine, earned her comparisons to Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, Ben Marcus, and Tom Perrotta. It was praised by The New York Times as "a powerful allegory of our civilization's many maladies, artfully and elegantly articulated, by one of the young wise women of our generation".
In her second book, a collection of 12 stories irresistibly seductive in their strangeness, she explores human life from beginning to end: the distress of birth into a world already formed; the brief and confusing period of "living" where we understand what is expected of us and struggle to do it; and the death-y period toward the end where we sense it is ending and will end only partially understood, at best.
The title is taken from one of the stories ("Intimation") but is also a play on Wordsworth's "Intimations of Immortality" - only in this case it's not clear exactly what is being intimated, but it's nothing so gleaming and good as immortality. The middle section of the book, "Living", is fleshed out with a set of stories that borrow more from traditional realist fiction to illustrate the inner lives of the characters.
At once familiar and mysterious, these stories have an eerie resonance as its characters find themselves in new and surprising situations. An unnamed woman enters a room with no exit and a ready-made life; the disappearance of people, objects, and memory creates an apocalypse; the art of dance is used to try to tame a feral child; the key to surviving a house party lies in knowing the difference between fake and real blood.
Elegant, surprising, wondrous, and haunting, Intimations is an utterly transporting collection from one of our most ingenious and brilliant young writers.

    Contrived
For me, a big test when I read works of fiction is, to what extent am I aware of the writer's efforts. If the writing is good in a way that shows the author has natural talent and a vision worth sharing, I am not aware of the writer at all, instead too absorbed in his or her words. When the writing is not good in that way, I am often uncomfortably aware of the writer. It's as if I feel them standing over my shoulder, pointing to certain sentences or passages and saying, "See? See what I did there?" The latter type of experience was the one I had with this collection of stories. I found the writing to be contrived, the stories uninteresting, and I was all too aware of the writer's labors. I like fiction about the strangeness of the human experience. But if I'm reading such works, by a Shirley Jackson or someone more contemporary like Pascal Garnier, I need the writing to feel like it came naturally to the writer, and I need it to draw me in so much that I'm too busy drinking in the words to think about the person who wrote them. This collection of stories felt forced to me.
    Originality is something to embrace!!!
I am writing the tenth review for this collection of short stories and feel that the majority of the reviews on here are harsh.

    Title: Chance Developments
    Subtitle: Stories
    Author: Alexander McCall Smith
Narrator: Robert Ian Mackenzie, Graham Rowat, Davina Porter, John Keating, Jamie Jackson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-12-16
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 23 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
It is said that a picture may be worth a thousand words, but an old photograph can inspire many more. In this beguiling book, Alexander McCall Smith casts his eye over five chanced-upon photographs from the era of black-and-white photography and imagines the stories behind them.
Who were those people, what were their stories, why are they smiling, what made them sad? What emerges are surprising and poignant tales of love and friendship in a variety of settings - an estate in the Highlands of Scotland; a travelling circus in Canada; an Australian gold-mining town; a village in Ireland; and the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.
Some will find joy and fulfilment - others would prefer happier endings. Each of them, though, will find love, and that is ultimately what matters.

Several "I wish that I had written that..."
What made the experience of listening to Chance Developments the most enjoyable?
It makes commuting so much less hellish, to the point where, with certain books, I don't want to arrive at destination.
What did you like best about this story?
The multiple stories. Probably as romantic as you will find McCall-Smith. Several of the stories were quite remarkable.
Which character as performed by the narrators was your favorite?
Always loved Davina Porter but there were no duds. Robert Ian McKenzie is always a standout.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Old Photographs and Pictures disclose some remarkable tales. ( I was already casting characters for some of them.)
    Any additional comments?
Had to listen to a couple of them two times. So many remarkable asides on the human condition ...
    Enjoyable Read!
Each story had well-developed characters and an interesting plot. Smith carried the theme of love throughout each unique story.
    Charming stories!
I love stories by Alexander McCall Smith. Happy endings! Perfect for my thirty minute commute.
Short stories from old photos...with no photos
What made the experience of listening to Chance Developments the most enjoyable?
Each reader seemed specifically chosen for the story and characters - so glad AMS went with a collaborative approach! The familiar narrators from all the AMS series were a pleasure to hear from again.
What did you like best about this story?
The approach of starting with an old photo is incredible. As I listened, I imagined the photos and what details let AMS down the paths he chose.
Which character as performed by the narrators was your favorite?
    Sister Flora.
If you could take any character from Chance Developments out to dinner, who would it be and why?
    Harry. Such a fascinating life.
    Any additional comments?
Given this book's tight tie to the inspirational images, it would have been fantastic for Audible to find a way to share those images. I have managed to find a couple of them online, but I'd still really like to see the rest!
The "Good"; The "Bad"; The "Otherwise"
Where does Chance Developments rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Among all the Alexander McCall Smith books, this collection of Short Stories falls a bit short -- in that most all the stories were very good, but a few were just "so so".

    Interesting lead character!

    Keep the episodes coming!
Leydy Otero continues to hold my interest with this second installment where we find Camille in more trouble, and Jason coming to her rescue. We are able to find out some background information on both of these characters, but not enough to know exactly what is going on yet!!! So many thoughts go through your head trying to figure out the next step and where it will lead these two. With Aaron Shedlock's narration, it's easy to get lost in the suspense and romance of this episode and hope that the series will continue!

    Narrator: Clive Johnson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-05-16
    Publisher: Labyrinthe Press
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 6 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
Fairy stories have captivated the hearts and minds of children over many centuries. With their stories of witches and fairies, enchanting castles, and beautiful princesses, they contain all the right ingredients for exciting a young mind. But as is well known, the truths that can be found within these timeless compositions are rich in meaning and metaphor.
In this innovative book, narrated by the author, seven traditional tales are beautifully retold. Appealing to children, these are also intended to inspire new meaning for adults. Combined with each classical retelling is a short story that aims to maintain the spirit and messages contained in the children's versions.
These parallel stories are specifically written for adults, set in a wide range of environments, and featuring characters who encounter a whole host of very real human challenges and dilemmas. Loan sharks and wife-beaters, compulsive gamblers and manslaughterers all feature here. But, so too, do stories of transformation and redemption, and journeys of self-discovery and unlikely friendship.
Each pair of stories is accompanied by a commentary on how they might be interpreted. The result is a collection of wonderful tales that may continue to enthrall children, whilst offering fresh levels of meaning that might be appreciated by an older audience.
Please note: The traditional tales that are included in this title (and having familiar titles) are suitable for children. Each new, parallel tale is intended for an adult audience.

    Good, enjoyable story
This is a good book to read and relax with. The narrator did a great job reading the story. The story was cute and enjoyable.
OK story about a town of shifters & 3 human girls.
OK story about a town made just for bear shifters that allow 3 human sisiter to have a bakery. Of coarse they keep the shifter pupulation a secret till one day. The secret is out. This story is cute and I was surprised that there was diversity. A mommy and her little daughter were of asian decent. They were pandas.. OK purchase and listen. Hope there is more to the story via another book.
    Okay
this story was full of redundant dialogue with minimal movement forward. I do like the concept so I'm hoping that the series picks up after book 1
