    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of the Wayward Pines Trilogy, comes this collection of short stories.
"*69" - Tim and Laura West receive a bizarre voicemail on their answering machine that seems to have unintentionally recorded a brutal murder. But what happens when the killer realizes their mistake? This story develops over one terrifying evening, and this young couple will never be the same.
"Remaking" - Tragic events unfold in a snowy, sleepy Colorado town. From the first scene, in which a man sits alone in the cold, watching a father and son in a diner, you know something is about to go horribly wrong.
"On The Good, Red Road" - A group of four hard men trying to reach a remote 19th Century mining town become stranded in an early blizzard and resort to drastic, terrifying measures, to stay alive.
"Shining Rock" - An older couple encounter a strange and menacing visitor during a camping trip in the North Carolina mountains. Friendly at first, this stranger seems to know them, and their secrets.
"Perfect Little Town" - Ron and Jessica Stahl are a power couple from California, on a Christmas holiday in Colorado. When they stop for the afternoon in sleepy Lone Cone, they're charmed by the quaint tourist town. But the folksy hospitality will vanish as the sun drops behind the mountains.
"The Newton Boys' Last Photograph" - At 25 words, the shortest story I ever wrote. But it packs a wallop.
"The Meteorologist" - Peter, a disgraced meteorologist and chronic wanderer, has traveled the country for years in his Winnebago, in search of the only thing that gives his life meaning. He's just arrived in the middle of nowhere - Hokie, Kansas - for the same purpose, but when he meets a waitress named Melanie, another sufferer, he's faced not only with his first real human contact in years, but perhaps someone who can save him.
"Unconditional" - A conversation between two people-devastating, tragic, and beautiful.

YOU CAN'T COME UP AGAINST A WHOLE TOWN
THE MOST DIFFICULT STORY EVER WRITTEN
These are all good stories, not a loser in the bunch. They include a western, a scary town (not Wayward Pines, but similar), stories with nasty twists, and a sad story about unconditional love, plus more.
Narrators are great, and do not be confused by the written by line, Luke Daniels did not write any of these, he should be listed as a narrator only.
Good compilation of his short stories
Some of the stories were great, others not so much. I enjoyed it overall. Good compilation of his short stories .

    Publisher's Summary:
This follow-up to the national best seller A Study in Sherlock is a stunning new volume of original stories compiled by award-winning Sherlockians Laurie R. King and Leslie S. Klinger.
The Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were recently voted the top mystery series of all time, and they have enthralled generations of readers - and writers.
Now, Laurie R. King, author of the New York Times best-selling Mary Russell series in which Holmes plays a costarring role, and Leslie S. Klinger, Edgar Award - winning editor of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, have assembled a stellar group of contemporary authors from a variety of genres and asked them to create new stories inspired by that canon. Authors included here are Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver, Michael Dirda, Harlan Ellison, Denise Hamilton, Nancy Holder, John Lescroart, Sara Paretsky, Michael Sims, and more.
Inside you'll find Holmes in times and places previously unimagined, as well as characters who have themselves been affected by the tales of Sherlock Holmes. The game is afoot - again!

    not made for listening
This compilation rarely features the original Sherlock character, vs an updated or spin off adaptation. Some stories, like the script/play complete with scene direction and cues like "Sherlock Holmes doesn't like this" before each line, were not made to be read out loud in novel form. I enjoyed perhaps two of the stories. The best being Silver Blaze from the horse's POV. Yes, the most enjoyable story was featuring a horse narrator.
It will put you to sleep
What would have made In the Company of Sherlock Holmes better?
I love Sherlock Holmes and was excited to get this book but then I could not finish the book. The narrator was terrible and did not hold my interest. If it had been narrated in a different manner the story line would have been good.
Would you be willing to try another book from Laurie R. King and Leslie S. Klinger ? Why or why not?
Not unless it was narrated with more enthusiasim
How could the performance have been better?
    . See above.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Story line was good if you were reading the book. However, narration plays a big the biggest part when I am listening to audio books and this was terible.
    Where is Sherlock
Nothing Sherlockian about this book other than the use of names and a couple of rehashing of original stories. These cannot be considered as sherlock stories, but rather a school exercise. Not much can be added about the quality of the narrators. One GOOD narrator when have improved it. May be more acceptable to the American reader.
    absolute travesty of Holmes
What would have made In the Company of Sherlock Holmes better?
I was so looking forward to listening to this what a major let down there is nothing about Sherlock at all. This was a horrible audio book do not waste your money getting this.
What was most disappointing about Laurie R. King and Leslie S.

All authors worked together for a series that is really great! I can't wait for the next book.
Awful narrator. Truly one of the worst on Audible.
Arika Rapson sounds like a over-blown caricature of a mid-western housewife from an SNL skit. There, I said it. I know it's mean, but it's all I can think of when I hear her sour, grating voice.
I don't know if the book is good or not, because I can't get past the first 5 minutes of her voice.

Buy it, read it, gift it! NOW!
I stumbled upon Breece Pancake while perusing a copy of Vice magazine. Noted the name and went on about my business. Then one day, that iconic fox head jumped out at me while meandering the fiction isles at Strand. I bought it and read it cover to cover. My jaw nearly locked in the open position. Breece Pancake just soared to the top of my favorites list.
His command of the language to engage the reader in his setting is unlike anyone's I've ever read. You feel the dirt on the back of your neck and the humidity in your throat as you read his stories. If you're not from the southern working class, you'll feel a de facto attachment to the people and lifestyle after read his works.
Terse sentences brim with weight the likes of which I've only seen achieved in the works Cormac McCarthy or Faulkner. If you're a fan of these gentleman, Pancake will find great company with you. Dark, dark stories are a glimpse into this troubled soul. Like many of the greatest writers we've ever known, life was too much to keep living. This small but brilliant collection is all we have from this brilliant young writer.
    Five Stars
Excellent book delivered 4 days ahead of the scheduled window of arrival. Ex-library just as described. Thx!
    Simple mastery
There are tributes from three successful writers of literary fiction included in this collection, probably because it is always a paradox when a truly gifted soul takes his own life at such a young age. He is a writer's writer. Each story deserves to be read more than once.
    Unrecognized and unfulfilled genius.
This is the most compelling fiction I have read in some time: perhaps not since Faulkner has an author captured the essence of a region while revealing the character of the human beings that populate the area. I was both moved by his passion and captured by the despair of his emotion. The sparsity of his prose only serves to enhance the beauty of his story-telling. What a tragedy his death was for literature.

On more than one occasion while reading this book I said to myself, "Man, this guy was good." Pancake's narratives are tightly woven, sucking you into the world he is describing. He has that knack for writing stories with a degree of detail and a pace that invites the reader to fill in the spaces that aren't being described effortlessly. I am from West Virginia so many of these stories resonated strongly with me, but you don't have to be from the region to enjoy this book. I highly recommend it.

    L'Amour's as his usual greatness
Can't say enough about his writing ability. He just had a gift for it. His books can bes read over and over and still be enjoyed. No unnecessary or wasted words from Lewis. I highly recommend this novel and all of his other books.
    Four Stars
Louis L'amour is always excellent. This is a compilation of short-stories. If you like Louis, you'll love it.
    Very good book.
Keeps you riveted until the end. As is typical for Lewis L'Amour, he paints good word pictures that takes you there.
    Short Stories
Bought this short stories book, as a gift, along with many others. The legend goes that Louis L'Amour started his impressively long career writing short stories for a paper. Later in life, he expanded many of his short stories into novels. After he passed on, his family had much of his unfinished work published in his honor. If it's not BANTAM, it's not official.
    An Enjoyable Read
I have been reading Louis LAmour novels for years and I haven't read one yet that I didn't enjoy. This book ranks up there with the rest of them.

Great Stories - First Rate and Old-Fashioned
If you're looking for a dose of the Old West's mythology before it got re-written to include second thoughts and anti-heroes, this is a great collection of stories. No, they aren't particularly realistic. The good guys are really good, the bad guys are pure evil, and the guy in the white hat almost always draws faster than the guy in the black hat.
In other words, when he wrote these magazine pieces, L'Amour was writing within the confines of a well-established genre, and you'll find nothing here to make you think particularly deep thoughts. However, these stories are just great. Well structured, well written, suspenseful, and full of vivid action and great characters. These stories were written to entertain, and that they still do!
Great writing, great stories, true Western flavor.
This "novel" is a collection of stories by Louis L'Amour. I had read one or two of his western novels growing up, but never knew about the individual stories. These are all easy reading, "the good guy wins" tales of the Old West, albeit fictional tales. The stories deal with struggles on the plains, hard work, sorrow, facing your fears - the same themes as his novels, but in more compact form. Highly recommend these to Louis L'Amour fans or fans of the Lonesome Dove type tales.
    Good western for sure.
I liked that the book is a compendium of a dozen or so short stories and concludes with West of the Tularosa. Personally I like the Sackett series better because I'm into historical fiction. But this book was quite entertaining.
    Oater
As an early Louis L'Amour you can follow the lead and style that became his trademark in the Sackett sagas. These short stories will keep the fans of pulp fiction entertained.
A Well Written Story of the West Typical of Louis L'Amour
A story of the west when the country was growing and those that were there had to depend upon themselves a whole lot more than on the government.
Well written with a story line that keeps the attention of the reader.
A typically good story and one of many by Louis L'Amour.
Although there are many of his books out there and available it's sad that he is gone and there won't be more from him.

    Members Reviews:
    Good read
Not too long ago I started reading Blake Crouch. I have read about 5 of his books. So far I have not been disappointed. I started with a couple of his novels, then I tried one of his short stories. I am really enjoying them, as I work full time and don't always have a lot of time to listen and/ or read books. I must admit the short story *69 was one of my favorites. The narrator was really good. And anyone who listenes to books knows a bad narrator can totally ruin a great book. I will continue to be a Blake Crouch reader and fan.
    Fabulous Quick Thriller
What made the experience of listening to *69 the most enjoyable?
I'm generally over critical but I keep coming back to BC for stories like this one. OK it started out cheesy but in an enjoyable way. Then, I was "in" in the story immediately and the momentum was realistic and then it all gets thrilling.
    And then its over.
That's my only problem with this book - it ended too soon. Would have loved more.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
YES. I though he was going to let her get away in a totally unrealistic way which I was already groaning about...and THEN HE DIDN'T.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The whole story is engaging and twists around you. I was really enjoying it and walked an extra 3kms because I didn't want to go home and unplug from the story!
If you could rename *69, what would you call it?
Names are hard, I think *69 is perfect. Although its true, the name didn't grab me, I only purchased it based on BC's history and the reviews.
    Any additional comments?
I find these mini books so annoying because they are tantalizingly short. But this one is well worth the credit.
    Great Short Story "*69*
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes, it was a great premise. Written very well. Not much else to say without giving story away.
Would you be willing to try another book from Blake Crouch? Why or why not?
Yes I buy almost all Blake Crouch's books. Even if the idea seems familiar, there's always a great twist .
What about Luke Danielss performance did you like?
I really like Like Daniels as a narrator. He has a way of reading different characters to make them distinctive.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I'd love to see it. But not dragging out to 90 minutes. Something like the old "Tales from the Crypt ".
    A quick read
While i thought this story was a little bit predictable the ending was a very big surprise to me.
If you like blake crouch or are looking for a quick read, this is definitely a good one.

So-so set of short mysteries featuring U.S. Grant
This is a collection of short stories with U.S. Grant investigating murders. They're in no particular order, the first taking place after the Civil War, and the rest at various points during the war. In one, it's not Grant, but his horse, investigating the murder.
Honestly, I liked that one the best.
The characterization is mostly good. There's good attention to the mores and social assumptions of the time. The plots, sadly, are just a little too pat, and seem like a waste of a great character like Grant, and of course his horse.
Not bad, but, really, nothing special.
    I bought this audiobook.

REIGNING KING OF THE ANTHOLOGY WORLD
I have tooted Adams' horn before. That title should be reigning king of the original anthology world. Dozier is the reigning king of the best of anthology world. I would think original anthologies would be harder. Your not picking from he best, you are picking writers and hoping they will not let you down. Adams is starting to get competition from George R.R. Martin and this book did not help his efforts. While this was a great subject, Adams was let down by some big names. I was expecting some good stuff from Lansdale, Card, Reynolds and Howey, but there stories were just phoned in. THERE WEREN'T NO BRAINS IN THIS OPERATION.
    DEAD WHITE MEN ARE GENEROUS.
Seanan McGuire a.k.a. Mira Grant wrote the best story. There were also some strong showings by Resnick, Winters, Yu and Williams. I am finding that at least in the short story genre, Tad Williams can always be counted on to write something interesting and entertaining.
IF YOUR GOING TO KILL ME, DO IT TO MY FACE
I have read all three of Frederick Douglass' biographies, but in Tobias' Sundown I heard some exciting stuff not included in any of these biographies.
    EVERYTHING STARTS WITH ONE PERSON
While Gigante is a good narrator, I would have liked to have heard a lot more narrators. Ross did good, but in my favorite story by McGuire, her male character had a tendency to drop his words at the end of a sentence and often I could not tell exactly what he said. The story was still good enough to make this a minor problem.
    Fun good collection
Lot of good stories, some better than others most worth listening to. Narrators are fantastic. Overall great collection
    Superb for fans of Deadlands!
Great collection of stories of the weird and macabre set in the American West. There is something for everyone, including Steampunk, Weird West and even a well written homage to Batman!
    Nice pastime
Would you listen to Dead Man's Hand again? Why?
Yes, There were several of the stories that could be heard more than once.
Because of the humor in some and some was entertaining strange.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
More stories, but that's only because I'm greedy.
It is a good wide collection of stories
What about Phil Gigante and Natalie Ross s performance did you like?
They had separated the different stories excellent. Without exaggerating their voice change.
