This stand-alone short story illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality populates the pages of the number-one New York Times best-selling series The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. This story in The Bane Chronicles, The Course of True Love (and First Dates), is written by Cassandra Clare.
    Members Reviews:
    Great story, one narration problem.
The story is great of course, but the narrator gave Magnus a sort of NY/Jersey type accent and it REALLY throws me off.
As for the actual narrative, it's everything one could hope for from a first date between Alec and Magnus. The inherent kindness in Alec's protective nature, the implacable goodness beneath Magnus' facade of flippancy... And of course Claire's sarcastic humor throughout. Apart from Magnus' wierd voice, luckily only used when he deals aloud, David-Lloyd's narration is lovely, I love his light Welsh accent.
    A short, fun, pleasant listen.
Sweet story. I laughed more than I expected. GDL's narration is fantastic. The rapping...my word...
    Too sweet!
Would you consider the audio edition of The Course of True Love (and First Dates) to be better than the print version?
I think each version give different feelings. The print version is sweet, and listening it being read makes the story feels sweeter. They "support" each other. ^^
What did you like best about this story?
Magnus descriptions about Alec, to Jace, and about Magnus feelings and hopes for the "Stupid sexy Shadowhunter" ^^
Have you listened to any of Gareth David-Lloyds other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I haven't. This is the first time, and I quickly like it. Thank you for the great job!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, it did. I have a good laugh ^^
    Any additional comments?
I love Magnus. I love Alec. I love it when they are together. Stupid couple hahaha
I love the story and I love the narrator. Thanks!
    amazing
it's such an amazing performance and I love to listen to it again and again :) I highly recommend it !
    Malec
Ive listened to this story atleast a dozen times and it always is a great listen. The narrator's voice is perfect for Magnus and holds your attention throughout the story.

    Great Short Story
What did you love best about Dandy Detects?
I have read the full-length Victorian San Francisco Mysteries, so I was looking forward to listening to this short story. I really like the characters in this story and the interaction between them.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Though I pretty much knew what was happening, it still did keep me at the edge of my seat because Alexandra brought the mystery to life.
What does Alexandra Haag bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She brings the story to life with her voice characterizations.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, it was just a very good story. Can't wait til the next book comes out!
    Great Story but too short!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it was a delightful, engaging story and as a fan of the series it was like visiting old friends and getting to know a minor character better.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not really - it was more of a known conclusion, but interesting to see how it unfolded. After all these are lone women in 19th century America, so they have almost no power.
What does Alexandra Haag bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She brought a warmth to the character, creating a feeling of coziness and intimacy.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
Great story, very good narration, but too short at just 41 minutes!
    Great Dog Great Story!
Dandy is a great little doggie and quite the gentleman! He handles himself well in many situations. This one is quite nasty! Men just aren't to be trusted! This is a good little read! I highly recommend it!
A great little mini-mystery for M Locke fans!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this little gem of a mystery to fans of the Maids of Misfortune series as well as anyone who enjoys historical or cozy mysteries
What did you like best about this story?
I listened to this one while out on a beautiful walk in the sunshine and I enjoyed it immensely. It was an easy story to get into and I was left wondering who-done-it.
Which character as performed by Alexandra Haag was your favorite?
I loved hearing Barbara Hewitt's voice, and, of course, Dandy himself!
Who was the most memorable character of Dandy Detects and why?
All my favorite characters were back from the other novels in the series, so it was like meeting with old friends again. I particularly enjoyed hearing from Barbara Hewitt's point of view, as I connected with her in the last book I read of Locke's.
    Any additional comments?
    M. Louisa Locke has a fine command of her world, her characters, her stories.

    Publisher's Summary:
The first ever collection of Iain Banks's short fiction, this volume includes the acclaimed novella, The State of the Art. This is a striking addition to the growing body of Culture lore, and adds definition and scale to the previous works by using the Earth of 1977 as contrast. The other stories in the collection range from science fiction to horror, dark-coated fantasy to morality tale. All bear the indefinable stamp of Iain Banks's staggering talent.

    Wtf
Really liked the first two books in the series. The third one was not available on audible so skipped to this one and the onlly reaction is WTF is this. A couple of short stories are OK, the rest is best ignored. Hope the next book is more like the first 2.
    May require hospital grade painkillers...
Had been quite some time since I had read this collection of short stories, I'd forgotten about it's existence. But I managed to get this downloaded shortly before being wheeled in for an emergency appendectomy. So please consider my review through the eyes of post-operation medical quality opiates.
    First story, isn't that nice.
Second story, what? Listen again. Oh yes that is good.
A few more stories which are rather good, but as I find with Peter Kenny's reading, he is the unsung star of this generation of Banks' publishing. Even if one doesn't necessarily *enjoy* the story, of which there was one in here that honestly after my hospital release I can't recall which one, Kenny's reading is a joy to listen to (and trust me, even more so under the influence of opiates). His attention to tone, character and timing is I think impeccable.
I must give a warning about the title short story. There is one scene, the dinner scene, where you may laugh so hard that you do yourself an injury. Sure, I had recently been sliced open and should have controlled myself. But, the extra morphone that was required due to the additional injury was not unwelcome.
This review is rambling? Sure, I'm out of hospital and still on painkillers.
The book? Oh yes, I'm reviewing the book and not the opiates. The book's a must have for the Banks completist. And a great little introduction of the differing styles for which Banks was well known. Kenny again delivers. My only niggle would be that it sounded like it was recorded in a small room and not a acoustically dead (ie, no reverb) room. However I'm fairly certain this was only noticeable at 4am on the ward with headphones when the only noises to be heard was the nurses footsteps checking on the patients. This isn't to say it's bad, but more to say why the 'overall' score I've given it doesn't match the performance and story scores.
OK, I'm out. Not editing this review. I need some more codeine based stuff...
    My 2nd Audible Experience!
I recently began work at an organization that let you listen to your mobile...so I downloaded my 2nd book...'State of the Art' by Iain M Banks. Just like the first book, I loved it.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 21 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
What would you think if you were confronted by a very old man who told you that he was you-only sixty years in the future? What would you do if he said he had traveled back in the past to warn you-that you were in great danger-and unless you did exactly as he instructed you, you would soon die in a horrible accident?
This is the spine of this new short story Lonely Pines, a suspenseful science fiction tale set in a an emergency room in Lonely Pines Hospital in Ohio, circa January 1981. The engaging, dedicated Dr. Hayley Gardner spars with his tempestuous, geriatric self-a patient-turning his life upside down for one grueling evening, with only his romantic interest Nancy-an attractive, smart, and caring young charge nurse-to share his ordeal with.
This conveniently short and engrossing drama will leave you with a sense of wonder and warm satisfaction.

    Great entertainment
Would you consider the audio edition of Lonely Pines: A Medical Short Story Wherein the Future Rescues the Past to be better than the print version?
The audio is great. It feels more real than the printed version, because the voice of the reader is so rich and powerful. It is such a pleasure to listen to. I liked the printed version, but really enjoy the ease of an audiobook. It is so relaxing to listen, rather than read.
What did you like best about this story?
The ending. It is so uplifting. It also flows really well throughout the story.
What about Kenneth Campbells performance did you like?
His voice and attention to detail is superb.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I found it very enjoyable. It was moving in some parts.
    Any additional comments?
I recommend it strongly. It is great.
    Time travel anyone?
It's an interesting story, a bit strange to get your mind around. A man travels into the past to save his own life. It raises so many questions in my mind and I find myself thinking around and around in circles and not going anywhere and yet it's quite interesting. It's a bit of a chicken or the egg situation.
The narration was OK, a bit stilted in the scenes where the characters are showing strong emotions, but overall OK.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher in exchange for an honest review.
If you found this review helpful would you please take a moment to click yes below.
    A really enjoyable short
    Any additional comments?
Wonderful narration and a gripping story are all packaged in a perfect length for maximum impact. I cannot believe how much I enjoyed this and I will listen again.

A young librarian receives a request for an obscure Hebrew book from a sinister gentleman, unaware of its contents.
Montague Rhodes James was a noted British mediaeval scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge (19051918) and of Eton College (19181936). He is best remembered for his ghost stories which are widely regarded as among the finest in English literature.
One of James' most important achievements was to redefine the ghost story for the new century by dispensing with many of the formal Gothic trappings of his predecessors, and replacing them with more realistic contemporary settings.
"Montague Rhodes James has an intelligent and scientific knowledge of human nerves and feelings; and knows just how to apportion statement, imagery, and subtle suggestions in order to secure the best results with his readers." HP Lovecraft.
Actor David Suchet is best known for his definitive portrayal of Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective created by the legendary mystery author Agatha Christie, in a number of international television productions. He narrates his story in Poirot and Me.
    Members Reviews:
Fun ghost story about relatives no one wants.
There are relatives no one wants to have. What's even worse is if they can't quite manage to die. This is very fun and very much a case of that. Enjoy.
    not engaging enough
5 stars for David Suchet reading, but the story really didn't hold my interest enough.
LIGHT ON FRIGHTS, BUT WORTH A LISTEN
What did you like best about The Tractate Middoth? What did you like least?
The Tractate Middoth is one of the least scary of M. R. James's tales and it's to David Suchet's credit that he has resisted the temptation to ham it up. His precise, understated delivery ensures that such disquieting moments as the story has do not leap out at the listener but slide insidiously into his or her mind.Only the burst of music at the start of this recording strikes the wrong note. It's neither eerie nor ominous - just irritating!
Ghost story typical of the 19th genre
Would you listen to The Tractate Middoth again? Why?
Possibly, if i had a little time to kill. Nothing in the story to warrant a rereading but classical stye writing and a good reading would stand repeating ( Since the book is well under an hour long)
If youve listened to books by M. R. James before, how does this one compare?
Read several of the authors shorts, this one is very typical. I wonder why they are published as seperate books rather than as a collection - i have five and in total they do not add up to even a short novel, under four hours.
What does David Suchet bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Suchet is unobtrusive, i read to myself unobtrusively ergo . . .
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Necessary to listen to in one reading due to it nature and length
    Any additional comments?
Good classic style writing and fine reading. Very typical of the genre and the other stories by James. This review to be attached to each of the other short stories by the autor, vis a vis their reviews to this. Ah.. had they be published as a collection i would only have to write one!
    The tractate midohte
David suchet has a wonderful voice that is perfect for conveying the sinister air of this one of M R James greatest ghost stories.

What about David Suchets performance did you like?
Suchet reads with consumate ease and clarity well suited to the book
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This is a "short" story, well under the hour. The length and genre means it needs to be a single listen
    Classic mystery
A short but enjoyable listen. Not terrifying but supernatural, with elements of the gothic tradition to make it darker and with a clear moral lesson so favoured by writers of the period.

    Shiner has the polish
This author has both a lyrical style and a nice tight storytelling ability. I've bought all of his books, and he never disappoints.
The dangerous visions of Lewis Shiner
I first discovered Lewis Shiner about 16 years ago. I was looking for nothing more than a nice escapist book I could read. Wandering through the library I some how ran across Glimpses; being a Doors fan and a Rock `n' Roll fan in general I checked out the book (literally) and it was great! I found myself reading the book once a year for the next two years and discovered something new in it each time. As new books came out, Say Goodbye, Black & White, I haven't been disappointed in a book written by Lewis Shiner yet.
Reading the stories in Collected Stories, I find myself thinking of it as something like Harlan Ellison's, Dangerous Visions. It's hard to say that comparison comes to mind, both books have a lot of science fiction stories in them. Both books have a paragraph or two written about the story; Shiner in an author's notes section following the stories, and Ellison as a preface to each story. The books don't feel similar in tone or content, all the stories in Collected Stories are Shiner's; in Dangerous Vision's Ellison acted as editor. So what makes me compare the two? Maybe, it's the personalization infused in each book. In Dangerous Vision's, Ellison had a preface of a paragraph or two on how the author came to write the story.

This is a story from the The Innocence of Father Brown - Volume 2 collection.
Here are the six final stories from The Innocence of Father Brown relating the crime-solving adventures of a rather unconventional detective. Having accumulated wisdom and empathy from years of listening to the dark confessions of his parishioners, in a flash Father Brown is able to solve mysteries that confound all others. Here is an eccentric and loveable character that will appeal to fans of the legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes. The stories are engagingly read by David Timson: "The Wrong Shape", "The Sins of Prince Saradine", "The Hammer of God", "The Eye of Apollo", "The Sign of the Broken Sword", and "The Three Tools of Death".
    Editorial Reviews:
A reverend warns his brother, a lustful colonel, that God will strike him in the street if he does not reform. Within the hour, the military man is dead. The Almighty is quickly ruled out as the one who struck a small hammer through his skull, and it turns to G. K. Chestertons quirky cleric and masterful detective, Father Brown, to unravel the passions behind the crime. A veteran of more than 1,000 BBC Radio Drama broadcasts, David Timson is a delight - providing the perfect mix of cheek and concern to all the characters - in his performance of Chestertons tales which are not so much expositions of mysteries as they are entertaining inquiries into human nature.

The Innocense of Father Brown Vo. 2 (complete classics)
Father Brown brings a Christian voice to his stories but in a quiet manner that is not in your face.
These stories have such a twist and turn that they keep you dangling until the end. It always appears that
the bad guy didn't do it until the end and sometimes he didn't do it. It is my type of mystery -keeps you on your toes, without much blood and gore! This last set of CDs, we purchased for our 95 year old priest who loves reading but has problems with his eyes. He is loving them. I give them 4 stars.
    Wonderful stories
Love the Fr. Brown stories! The reader is great and really makes the story come alive! Definitely recommend this recording to others!
Excellent - The Hammer of God
This, "The Hammer of God", is a short story in audio format. It s an excellent narration of what is, to this point, my favorite "Father Brown" mystery. The short story is written by G. K. Chesterton. The protagonist is Father Brown who was inspired by a friend of G. K. Chesterton. To my knowledge, there are approx. 53 Father Brown stories. This is possibly favorite one. I cannot really tell you why without risking spoiling the story. Thank You...

    a short and sweet classic
This classic short actually has a short but profound message. It uses a lot of words to get there, but that is to he expected given the year written.

Good narration. Easy to tell characters apart. It's a fun Poe story. Enjoyed the story and would listen to these readers again.
