A Different Kind of Vampire Tale
This is an interesting take on a vampire story, giving the vampire myth a creative spin.
It's about a man who, after a strange near-death experience, begins to see things that just can't be. Shadows of human figures are following him and watching him, yet he tries to ignore the unreal as long as he can until the mounting evidence makes him finally dive into this dark reality. Holbein does a good job of depicting a man in the real world who slowly is forced to accept things that he would before only have believed to be fictitious.
Note - this book is not for readers looking for romanticized vampires (think Twilight, Interview with the Vampire, etc... ). The vampire of this book is gritty and violent and determined to survive.
I could hardly put this book down. The plot picks up right away in the first few pages without any long intros, and the suspense just catapults you through the rest of the book.
What I didn't love about this book (even though I did enjoy reading it):
* Some of the main characters seemed rather one-dimensional.
* Even though I felt I couldn't put the book down at times, I kept wishing something important for the storyline would happen already. Details of the plot could have been more elaborated on to make it a little more complex.
* Sometimes the dialog seemed somewhat unnatural.
* Without giving anything away about the story I will just say that the fighting scenes at times were a little unbelievable.
All in all a good book for some entertainment from a famous German writer of science fiction, fantasy, and horror.
