How a Nation got an idea
Classic Dan Dare: The Reign of the Robots (Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future)
Way back in 1950ish as a small lad I awaited each Saturday for the newsagent to open. That was when my copy of Eagle came in from England. I particularly loved space things and of course Dan Dare. I did have a complete collection of copies I had bought, but alas gave them to a children's ward at the local hospital when I was 14. Now at last I can relive the adventures of Dan and the Space Fleet via these excellent books.
This story follows on from the epic adventure that sees Dan defeat the Phants. On return to earth he finds all is not well and his arch enemy, the Mekon, is up to no good. Well of course Dan wins what else?Hardly a spoiler. But 2 important things about this episode need to be stated.
First, as I recall this was the last Dan Dare I read. Second I am told that one Terry Nation was also a Dan Dare fan. Now for those of you who come from another dimension, Nation's great contribution to the world was The Daleks and their inventor Davros.
In this Dan Dare story I see a direct link between the wizened Davros in his little carriage and the Mekon on his . Also the remorseless robots of the Mekon are to me the prototype Daleks.
That aside this is a cracking yarn. Enjoy.
Beautifully presented...
... And a money for value reminiscence of a golden age in comics/graphic novels and SF. Dan Dare was hugely influential, is a lot of fun, totally engrossing, and I'm glad he's been resurrected!
