Downtown Cornerstone Church

Today we are continuing a set of annual sermons we refer to as our new year essentials. These sermons address subjects to which we must repeatedly return for the glory of God and the transformation of lives. These are different sermons, taking different angles, on issues we need to come back to again-and-again. Today, we consider the question, “Does Christianity diminish women?” Is Christianity ‘anti-woman’ used to ‘control women’ with little concern for their well-being?

Today, we consider the question, “Is Christianity against diversity?” Is Christianity, as is increasingly claimed, merely a white, western, patriarchal religion, used to oppress?

We are beginning a set of annual sermons we refer to as our new year essentials. These sermons address subjects and important themes that we must repeatedly return to for the glory of God and the transformation of our inner and outer lives. These are not, of course, the same sermons. Rather, they are different sermons, taking different angles, on issues we need to come back to again-and-again. We begin our series by considering the significance of the Bible.

The Old Testament lays the foundations of God’s story of redemption. As God’s New Testament people today, the Old Testament is our family history. Today, we will look at the prophet Jeremiah, who was one of God’s messengers in the Old Testament. We will study how God called Jeremiah, and consider how we have more in common with him than we might think.

We continue our One Another’ing sermon series, which looks at the countercultural character of Jesus' church, through the 50+ "one another" commandments. We are empowered by the gospel to love one another, to serve, to encourage, to forgive, to disciple, to pray, to show hospitality to one another, and much more. Today, we’ll look at Paul's urgent instructions for us to patiently do good to one another, in all of our relationships - especially in the church.

We continue our study of the most influential, life-changing, worldview-shaping letter ever written: Romans. It is a timeless, divinely-inspired masterpiece on the joy-filled-life-as-it-should-be freedom found in Jesus alone. For eleven chapters, Paul unfolds the heights and depths of Jesus’ gospel. In chapters 12-13, he then applies God’s gospel-forged mercies to our many relationships. Finally, in closing, 14:1-15:13, he surprisingly turns to address the importance of hope-filled harmony among Jesus’ people amidst our many differences.

It is a timeless, divinely-inspired masterpiece on the joy-filled-life-as-it-should-be freedom found in Jesus alone. For eleven chapters, Paul unfolds the heights and depths of the gospel of Jesus. Then, in chapters 12-16, he applies God’s gospel-forged mercies to our many relationships. In 14:1-15:13, surprisingly, he turns to address issues of the conscience and Christian freedom. What do we do when we disagree with one another?
