Dr. Al Aly: Leveling Up “Surgery Should Be a Symphony”

Listen Later

In this Leveling Up episode of the PRS Global Open Deep Cuts podcast, Dr. Al Aly discusses many aspects of aesthetic surgery, such as conflicting zones of skin pull, honesty in assessing surgical results, his approach to surgical markings, the difference between the lower body lift and the belt lipectomy, his approach to brachioplasty including placement of the scar, patient positioning, and use of liposuction, his technique for handling postoperative seromas, what he asks residents to focus on when learning a surgical technique, and the importance of making the performance of surgery look beautiful.

Dr. Al Aly is a Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas TX. He completed residencies in ENT as well as Plastic Surgery and a fellowship in facial plastic surgery. He worked at the university of Iowa for 13 years where he pioneered body contouring for massive weight loss patients, and literally wrote the definitive book on the techniques involved. Subsequently he was the vice chair of the division of plastic surgery at UC Irvine and then moved to Abu Dhabi where he was the section head of plastic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic hospital. He has been at UT Southwestern since 2020 as a full professor in the department of plastic surgery. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum and is past President of the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation. In 2008 he received the Aesthetic Society's Lockwood Award, bestowed on surgeons who have made major contributions to the field of body contouring.

Your host, Dr. Puru Nagarkar, is a board-certified plastic and hand surgeon, and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
