Dr. Brian Giordano was told not to bother applying to medical school because he wasn’t “pedigreed enough” and while he suffered from imposter syndrome early in his journey, this successful NY-based orthopaedic surgeon has built a booming sports medicine practice focusing on achieving peak performance and resilience to injury. He’s an Assistant Professor and founder of the Hip Preservation Program in the Department of Orthopaedics, at the University of Rochester Medical Center, going from treating pro athletes while based in LA to healing high school competitors and “weekend warrior” athletes in upstate NY. Brian says what he lacked in privilege growing up, he made up for with a strong family foundation in hard work, fearless commitment to being comfortable with things that are uncomfortable, and servicing people in need. In this episode, we dig into the headspace of a successful surgeon and dedicated father, what it takes to flourish in the highly competitive and ever-evolving field of medicine, and Dr. Giordano opens up about the urgent need for increased professional focus on mental wellness in today’s medical community.
