Goals of Care (GOC) conversation issue (hospice plan of care), communication failure on the part of the hospice agency because their patient did not know about 24/7 availability. MAiD has specific criteria (not legal in all USA)
- NOT for everyone, not required to ingest if obtained.
- Available in 10 states and D.C.
- State residency requirement except Vermont & Oregon
- A terminally ill adult with 6 month prognosis AND Decision making capacity to exercise autonomy
- Able to self-ingest medication, NOT euthanasia like animals
- Experiencing immeasurable suffering
- Not depressed or suicidal
Consider limitations and interventions that could improve terminally ill patient’s quality of life.
- Cognitive impairment precludes i.e. dementia
- Neuro degenerative disease (i.e. ALS)
- Family support

MAiD Steps (California)
- Written Request
- 2 visits from attending physician, 2 days apart
- 1 visit from consulting physician
- Obtain medications (minimum 4 days)
- Self-Ingest 1 minute
- Death approx 5-10 hours
