Dr. Howard N. Langstein: “A Thinker and Tailor’s Journey through Plastic Surgery” – A “Giants in Plastic Surgery” Interview

Listen Later

In this "Giants in Plastic Surgery" episode of the PRS Global Open Deep Cuts Podcast, Dr. Howard Langstein discusses his journey through plastic surgery: from his decision to attend medical school, through his residencies in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, his tenure running a Plastic Surgery department, to his retirement and beyond.

Read a recent classic PRS Global Open article by Dr. Langstein and co-authors, “The Value of a Co-surgeon in Microvascular Breast Reconstruction: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis”: https://bit.ly/Co-surgeons

Dr. Howard N. Langstein is the Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he brings extensive expertise in microvascular reconstruction to the Rochester area. These microvascular procedures involve surgeries performed through microscopes on very small blood vessels, often used for reconstruction following cancer treatments.

Prior to joining the University of Rochester, Dr. Langstein was an associate professor of Plastic Surgery and the director of the Plastic Surgery Graduate Medical Education Programs at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Besides his proficiency in microvascular reconstruction, he has a strong interest in breast, head, and neck surgeries, as well as cosmetic procedures.

In the mid-1990s, Dr. Langstein held various surgical roles at Mercy Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh. He returned to Houston in 1998, where he eventually became an associate professor at M.D. Anderson and led one of the world's leading microsurgical training programs.

Your host, Dr. Vimal Gokani, is a senior Specialty Registrar in plastic surgery in London, England. Your producer & editor, Charlene Kok, is a Year 2 Medical Student in Imperial College London, England, with a keen interest in Plastic Surgery.
