It's harsh to consider that such an event could well ensure globally for some many.  It's not the 'how to improve your health' kind of information that is easy to discuss, yet it is completely likely according to the Health Agencies that work with indigenous peoples world wide.

This begs the urgent question of: Why is this population of people so affected by processed foods, and of course what can be done to reverse this trend.

The bigger question is, are indigenous people really so different or are they merely the most sensitive to the life-threatening toxicity process foods, and if that is true than aren't we all next in line for the same fate?

Clearly the evidence exactly that given the well documented hyper-increase inf chronic diseases in the US and western economies in general.

Key takeaways here are that you must step up your personal responsibility in terms of knowing your own health status via understanding your labs in general, including your genomomic mutations and other blood work. The days of waiting for your doctor to tell you what you need do are fading away.

I bet you thought it was ENTIRELY about the carbs you were eating that were responsible for your weight gain, or slide into mild cognitive impairment.

Well, you're not entirely wrong, however, having lots of carbs puts an increased demand on your ability use and produce choline. High carbs are one of the reasons for the choline deficiency, the other reason is that some people 25 - 40+ percent are limited in their abilty to use and manufacture choline (from Bile, to acetyl choline a vital neurotransmitter, and more). 

Having high carbs (carbs in general), not consuming enough choline (egg yolks and liver) and having specific SNPs (single nuclear polymorphisms) that predispose you to not being able to use choline well, or at all, puts you unequivocally at risk for cognitive impairment, dementia, and NAFD, if not obesity as well.

The GOOD NEW is that it is correctable without medications through dietary changes.

I kid you not.

This has been asked for often, that is what can I expect to happen with my labs when I start 'keto'.  That is a very broad question, so I have ignored in favor of a more specific narrower topic.

However, it is time to take a shot at creating an overview of what one can expect to happen with their labs. One central theme to this answer is so so much depends on where (ie what metabolic state) one is starting.  We are very different from eachother metabolically, genomically, and nutritionally and those differences should be taken into account. We are not robots, or cars that just need an annual tune up, but we do need an annual evaluation via lab work, in my opinion.

Nothing like learning of a friend's avoidable death, and seeing the devastation it creates in other people lives that were close to him.

What I'm referring to is that I Lost a friend to covid these last few weeks… 
just when we all thought the worst of it had past us by.

Like the last soldier to die in a war after the end of the hostilities, but before it was declared officially over.

He had all of the ‘co-morbidities’ big time in addition to having ethnic pre-dispostion to obesity and diabetes by being Samoan. He lived in a different context of life from mine, followed a different ‘norm’ and now was leaving a different legacy as well. At 49, 5 kids, loving wife, the virus found him.

I write this here, now, because spreading the knowledge of metabolic health (which is really what this FB group is) is NOT a FAD but life saving information, should you choose to use it. It really is

It is on our shoulders to become healthier and to teach, show, our children and friends that it is possible and it a value worth striving for … forever. 

My hope is that you never see ‘Keto’ as a fad to lose weight only. It is so much more than that.

Life, is something which we have a personal responsibility to appreciate, respect, and, learn how to be better for ourselves. Our health is part of that learning.

Wish my friend felt that way.

We often use the expression in research, medicine and science that we 'stand on the shoulders of  giants' which is to mean that all of what we know today was because of those bold doctors, scientists, that did the work that we now accept as true. What isn't often added is that those 'Giants', the pioneers were publicly ridiculed, and disagreed with for years before their work became appreciated. And often when their research and discoveries were accepted it was in silence, without public acknowledgement.

Here is Dr. Artemis Simopoulos who, in my view is one of those 'giants' of medicine and research, and as well as a student Aristotle ... some 2,500 years later. Enjoy this brilliant mind of  a person whose work, truth,  is finally being recognized globally by the World Health Organization, UNESCO, to name a few institutions that know a 'Giant' when they see one.

I was lucky to be able to talk to Dr. Artemis Simopoulos about her life's work on essential fatty acids and genetics. She has been the foundation for much of what we know about the importance of omega 3, and the omega 6: 3 ratio and why that is so important.

She her works, of over 365 scientific papers, and having edited over 50 books in her field is evidence of her overwhelming work she has done over the last 50 years. From arguing with Senator George McGovern  in the 1970s over what was to become the Nutritional Guidelines for nearly all western countries, to ushering in the era of precision personal medicine through genomic analysis. 

This podcast is about the importance of her work, and how the World Health Organization and UNESCO is working with her today on making sure her work will be a 'corner stone' for their future nutritional and dietary recommendations.

If you have had the privilege of ever seeing someone transform their physical appearance by doing a protein sparing modified fast, then you will be wondering, as I am. How can that be possible.

Today we’re talking about the secret to losing weight correctly. Or the reasons why people tend to fail on what they think of as a ketogenic diet.

The popular (mis)perception of keto

We hear a lot about keto currently, and the popular perception is that there are many experts out there who can tell us what to do. The truth, however, is that there is no accountability to the definition of what keto is. About 90% of all the information comes from marketers who have never done keto before, and what they think they know about it is probably wrong.  

The definition of keto

Ketosis gets gauged by measuring your ketones with a keto meter. So the definition of what keto is can only be determined by whether or not you are in ketosis while you are on it.

The start of the ketogenic diet

The ketogenic diet started in 1925. The term ketogenic diet was coined in around 1921 by William Wilder in response to the previous decades of fasting for diabetes and other conditions. 

The term ‘ketogenic diet’

The ketogenic diet was used strictly for epilepsy, mostly for pediatric epilepsy. The term ‘ketogenic diet’ came about because it is a diet that causes people to produce ketones that occur when people are fasting.

A new application

In the past, the ketogenic diet was only about epilepsy, so the application of keto to diabetes or weight loss is very new. Certain things need to be put in place for you to achieve success with it, and for your body to make the necessary changes.

No studies 

Using keto for weight loss is very new, and there are no studies to prove that keto is effective for weight loss.

The common-sense approach

The common-sense approach to keto and weight loss lies in gaining a deeper understanding of how various foods affect the body.

Losing weight

To effectively lose weight, you have to move away from carbs. And you have to be kind to your body while doing that, so you cannot do it quickly. It has to be a gradual process.

The secret

The secret of losing weight on the ketogenic diet is tracking. Education is also vital.

The 1800s

If you look at menus from the 1800s, you will see that they are 90% protein, with very few vegetables.

Misinformation about what you should be eating

There is not much data available currently to inform people about what they should be eating. And a lot of the available information is misinforming people. 

Facebook groups 

Within Facebook groups, there is migration and an evolution towards a low carbohydrate (and eventually no carbohydrates) and a higher protein diet. 

Protein

You cannot overeat protein, in the whole food sense, by itself as you could with carbohydrates, because you would get too full.

Macros

When dealing with the categories of the macros of fat, carbohydrate, and protein as whole food areas, you have to remove the grains and root vegetables from the carbohydrate category. Not because they are unhealthy, but rather because they have very high sugar content.

Changing your diet in stages

If you want to lose weight, your body needs to adapt to a high protein and a low or no carbohydrate diet. That means that you have to change your diet slowly, in various stages.

Structure

The secret to losing weight with a keto diet lies in tracking your diet, educating yourself, being prepared to make changes, and having a structure.
