Rachel de Simone is an Integrative Physical Therapist, who integrates Ayurvedic yoga with modern "pain science" in order to treat the whole person, rather than simply treating the symptoms. de Simone begins by explaining to us that pain is greatly misunderstood in the US, and that there needs to be a shift from a perspective of pain leading to a place of hopelessness to one of solution. She informs us that the body is communicating with us all the time, but we are culturally conditioned to override the body's messages and to power through (ex-when we are hungry, tired, burned out, mentally/physically not well). By continually ignoring the body's pleas, the nervous system loses the ability to locate and push the "power down" button, eventually leading to a decrease in concentration, mood, motivation, relationship health, and disease. By helping people to integrate body and mind awareness, the intimate mind-body connection is then supported, and communication is strengthened. This can lead to more effective pain management and wholistic well-being becomes possible once again. de Simone winds up this important and timely conversation with a calming breathing technique, demonstrating the importance of mind-body integration.
