  • "Ditch the Ditty: Doing what matters instead of doing it all"

Dr. Lindsey Godwin and Miriam Novotny, co-authors of "Ditch the Ditty," dive right into our discussion by first telling us how to become more aware of "ditties," those unwanted and unnecessary asks and tasks that so many of us take on each day, often without hesitation. It's anything you agree to out of politeness, obligation, or fear of letting someone down. They're the "yeses" that don't feel like a choice. Especially women, the authors explain, have been conditioned from the get-go to get it all done while also making it look easy. This societal dynamic further perpetuates the cycle of the ditty-doing-expectation, which all too often expands beyond home and family to our work and social environments as well. Once we become aware of the ditties that land in our laps we become better able to ditch them, freeing up our valuable life-minutes to do more of what we really want to do.Miriam Novotny, MPOD, and Lindsey Godwin, Ph.D., are two of the three global change and strengths-based leadership experts behind Ditch the Ditty: Doing What Matters Instead of Doing It All—a #1 new release in Women’s Studies on Amazon. Along with their co-author, Molly McGuigan (who was with us in spirit for the interview), they help individuals break free from overcommitment, challenge unspoken expectations, and lead with intention. • The Magic of Making a Difference

Dr. Marlena Uhrik, author of "The Magic of Making a Difference: One CAN Make a Difference," grabs us with her heart-warming story of how one can of bamboo shoots wound up feeding thousands of children and their families. Uhrik's story not only tells the tale which began with a child's desire to feed hungry children, but also how it ignited a spark within for Uhrik to expand upon this effort by starting "The Kids' Breakfast Club" in a community in northern California. Uhrik speaks to us on how giving rewards us with a genuine feeling of empowerment by knowing we are making a difference, as well as being a part of something larger than ourselves. Now 30 years later, the nonprofit organization is still going, and the original story involving a child and one can of bamboo shoots is now a published children's book. Uhrik leaves us with the empowering message that what we do for others, we also do for ourselves.*Uhrik was asked to carry the torch in the 1996 Olympics as a national community hero, was presented with the United States Presidential Award for Service from President Obama, and recently received the California Woman of Distinction award for Women’s History Month in 2024.The Magic of Making a Difference: One CAN Make a Differencehttps://www.amazon.com/Magic-Making-Difference-One-Make/dp/B0CHKY6V1T
