HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano devote this podcast episode to French director Jean-Luc Godard, whose recent death was such a great loss. Godard's first feature film, "Breathless" (1960), qualifies as a landmark in film history. Along with such contemporaries as Francois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Eric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette, Godard was part of a movement known as the French New Wave. It was as if a breath of fresh air was brought to filmmaking in terms of subject matter and style. Godard remained a prolific and provocative film director until well into the 21st century.

There is plenty of satire in "Honk for Jesus: Save Your Soul," featuring Sterling K. Brown as the scandal-marred pastor of a megachurch and Regina Hall as the pastor's wife. HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano talk about a film that tends to work minor variations on the situation without going deeper into character or plot. In terms of the basic subject matter, it's not as effective as an earlier film, "The Eyes of Tammy Faye." Marie and Mike also talk about film and television depictions of Queen Elizabeth II, among them "The King's Speech," "The Queen" and "The Crown." Marie and Mike single out Helen Mirren's Academy Award-winning performance in "The Queen" as an especially powerful depiction of the late monarch.

The very nature of narrative is at the heart of "Three Thousand Years of Longing," in which Tilda Swinton plays an academic who buys a bottle that turns out to contain Idris Elba as a genie. In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano share why they are mildly disappointed about the storytelling in this film. Although they agree that the two actors work extremely well together and also agree that there are nifty special effects, the stories told by the genie have a wandering quality that takes up screen time that would be better spent exploring the relationship between the academic and the genie. Marie and Mike also discuss "Breaking," in which John Boyega plays a disgruntled veteran who tries to call attention to his case by taking hostages inside a bank. Although the film gets bogged down in police procedural matters and does not go into much detail about the troubled protagonist, there are serious issues to consider here. The film also marks the final screen appearance by the late Michael K. Williams
