Show notes: It’s fall, finally. I love fall and Halloween, but it's always a busy time of year for me. This 97th episode is the start of Drawing Funny’s 7th season of podcasting. Our first episode-“Calling All Cartoonists“ and introductory pilot episode "Is This Thing On?" were released during the pandemic on October 14, 2020, and we’re closing in on 100 episodes..! In this mid-late October episode of “Drawing Funny” I go over of some of the upcoming scheduled Mid-South Cartoonists Association fall activity, as well as other Halloween and art related events coming up around town and in the midsouth area.

The RRParksCARDS 13th Annual HALLOWEEN Trading Cards Event’s Kickstarter campaign ended on Friday, October 9 2026 successfully! I did 9sketchcards for this set, and will have artist returns available for sale soon.

I currently have several scare-brushed Monsterpieces, some “Scared Silly” acrylic maker paintings that will be on display and for sale at the Memphis Monster Market through October 25th, including some new exclusive art pieces. I talk to Lauren Holterman aka "Holtermonster" about the Monster Market celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this year, too! I’ll also be set up again at the 3rd annual Memphis Monster Con out at the Agricenter International in November.

I had a case of the "explosive diarrhea" for just about the whole month, and am still trying to get rid of it. I recorded this episode yesterday and last night I was up all night running to the bathroom, so since I was up I just went ahead and edited the episode. Also had leg cramps so bad I had to have my wife help me out of bed yesterday. I get lower leg cramps from time to time, but never upper ones and none so bad that I couldn't move my knee or have it feel like I'm dislocating my hip! Am currently uploading this episode between trips to the bathroom...again. Ugh, I'm hoping all this is gone by August..!

Another artist, Angi Cooper, had their reception the same night/time in the downstairs gallery. I discuss what our team-up of receptions did- or didn't do for attendance. My art show runs from June 6-August 2, 2026 and is in conjunction this month with Playhouse’s production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street“, June 12 – July 12, 2026. All art shows on display are free to attend during Playhouse’s normal business hours at 66 South Cooper Street, Memphis, TN 38104. Show notes: This 92nd episode of “Drawing Funny” features some interviews and panels from the recent 4th annual Memphis Public Libraries Comic Con at the Raleigh Branch Library on May 30th. I was set up there next to the stage between Unbound Comics and Thrill Comics, and just around the corner from the Mid-South Cartoonists Association's table. This year's guest was voice actor SungWon Cho, and the con had a few panels, a costume contest, 501st members, food trucks, crafts, vendors, free graphic novels, and more. I give you my thoughts on the event and space, plus share a couple interviews and panels from the show.

Show notes: This episode is our first "Explicit Content" warning for adult language usage. Normally I avoid dropping F-bombs or edit/bleep them out, but said, "Fudge it!" and left them in as is in my interview with "Feral" and "Stray Dogs" comic artist Tone Rodriguez out at 901 Comics East for his signing appearance for FCBD. Discussed the Image Comics books he's been working on with Tony Fleecs (pronounced "fleece"). Haven't seen Tone in 20yrs..! He's half the man he used to be, and I'm probably a good 40lbs lighter than then myself.

In the news section I discuss this year's Free Comic Book Day in the Memphis area, plus other art/event news. I also did interviews with local artists That Katie Jones and Ryan Ladner at the Mid-South Cartoonists Association Monthly Dinner Gathering at Garibaldi’s Pizza. Katie has an art show out at Playhouse on the Square this month, and Ryan is working on his "Memphis VS Zombies" comic series and will be at the upcoming Beale Street Monster Club's "Bigfoot On Beale" celebration upstairs at A. Schwab's. I'll have a table at the event, too.

My “Featured Creatures” art show reception will be on June 5, 2026 from 5-7pm in the 2nd Floor W gallery at Playhouse – 66 South Cooper St., Memphis, TN 38104. Another artist, Angi Cooper, is having a reception the same night/time downstairs. My art show runs from June 6-August 2, 2026 in conjunction with their production of “Sweeney Todd“. All art shows are free to attend during Playhouse’s normal business hours. I'll have several scare-brushed Monsterpieces, some "Scared Silly" marker illustrations, and wood panel acrylic maker paintings on display and for sale. Whatever doesn't sell there I'll have at the Memphis Monster Market in October, and the Memphis Monster Con in November. Hope to scare ya there!

Show notes: "Drawing Funny" episode 90 is so nice, I did it twice! Due to technical difficulties mixed with my stupidity, I had to record/edit this podcast twice! It's the episode that for a bit- wasn't! Hopefully you'll think it's worth the effort and learn something from it...even if it's how NOT to do something. I discuss some of my history with comic conventions, my opinions on the con scene today, some of my "rules" and advice for setting up at cons, plus thoughts on searching for new revenue streams for my art and making money on an image for years to come. Has the con scene hit oversaturation? Are comics and comic creators becoming a rare sight at "comic cons"? Is consignment and/or print-on-demand worth the effort?

I share news on the upcoming Mid-South Cartoonists Association Monthly Dinner Gatherings at Garibaldi's Pizza (1st Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm), our MSCA "Art Of The Game" art show (now through Jan. 30) and the recent artists reception out at the Memphis Jewish Community Center. Show notes: This is my first episode of "Drawing Funny" for 2026. I usually don't get political on this podcast, but after the last year we all went through, I had to share some of my thoughts and feelings on the state of affairs with the current administration. It's at the beginning of the episode and I promise- it's not too long of a rant. Show notes: This will be my last episode for 2025, and as I record this it feels more like spring break than Christmas here in the mid-south..! It's been between 60-75 degrees this week, and we're currently wearing shorts in late December! We even got some yardwork and gardening done on Christmas day. And of course it's supposed to be be back down around freezing next week, which it was the weekend before last...ugh. Well, I can say that it's been an extremely busy year, as well as crazy and scary, too! If you heard my last episode you know that 2026 looks like it's going to be just as busy for me and other members of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association. In the news section I share info on our upcoming MSCA Monthly Dinner Gatherings at Garibaldi's Pizza (1st Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm), our ongoing "Art Of The Game" art show out at the Memphis Jewish Community Center, and the recent loss of monster kid, ape-man, and original Ghost Buster- Bob Burns. Recently I heard hosts of the Comic Lab podcast, Brad Guigar and Dave Kellett,  talk about attending local comic cons, doing in-store signings, and being part of artist communities- or more accurately, their avoidance of such things. That got me thinking about the importance or necessity of those, or are they worth it..? I love the podcast, and agree and sympathize with some of what they said, but disagreed with other opinions of theirs. In my opinion section I discuss some of my experiences being a "local" artist, some pros and cons for setting up (and paying for) comic conventions, thoughts on being part of an artist or geek community here in town, and joining local or national clubs and organizations, either for fun and/or profit. I share what I think some of the benefits can be for an artist- both amateur and professional, and what my hopes are for other artists in this tough economy and frustrating political times. Even being almost 60 years old now, I still struggle with what direction I want to go with my art, question how long I can continue making art, and desperately seek to make a living as a "professional" artist.
