Drewling Samantics

All roads lead to Rome

After the last outing saw Drew and Sam happily recalling the beginning (and amazing progression) of a recent journey, and celebrating its biggest milestone to date, this week the boys jump back considerably further to compare the very different paths they took throughout the initial stages of their theatrical  careers.

With one of the chaps pursuing a perhaps more “traditional” route, and the other very much owing coincidental events to his resulting profession, join the dynamic duo in this latest episode of Drewling Samantics as they discuss the right way to go about becoming a performer (if such a thing exists), things to consider along the way, and how the stepping stones can be extremely varied - often unusually and sometimes unpredictably so!

Jobs for the Boys

Welcome to another episode with the hugely grateful and proud Drew and Sam. Why are they feeling so joyous this week in particular you ask? Well today they are celebrating their tenth episode! So their hats are tipped to all the Drewling Samantics listeners, subscribers, fans, downloaders, guests and prize winners, for joining them on their journey, and for making it so much fun!

As they hit double figures, Drew and Sam are thinking about alternative careers. But don’t worry, there is no need to panic as the boys are certainly not leaving the world of show business! No, they are just reflecting on what they may have chosen to do had they not been lucky enough to be able to follow their dreams.

From the worlds of technology and animal husbandry, to carpentry and Her Majesty’s customs they have rejected them and many other “nine to fives”, all to pursue the thrill they get from displaying their skills on stage and screen. And of course to jointly host a Podcast for everyone to enjoy! So join them and celebrate… to be honest you’d be an ass to miss it!

Mindset, Magic and Method to the Madness

The boys are back in town! Yes, Drew and Sam return for another episode. No guest this week, but the gents are in top form as per usual, this time out giving a guided tour of their working minds, specifically focussing on ways of approaching and preparing for a role. With Drew having two substantial projects in the can this year already, and Sam prepping for his two big roles filming this summer, the lads discuss the finer points of their personal work regimes and delve into exactly what happens after they have signed the contract (and highlighted the lines!)

From learning required skills and picking up accents, to thoroughly doing your research and wearing the right pair of shoes (?!) lots of elements go into the shaping of a performance and we find out how Drew and Sam start their process.

Add into that going off on a tangent about football (although what Drew knows about football is dubious - he supports Luton Town!) and the eagerly awaited announcement of the winners of the Stage Door competition, this is certainly an entertaining 40 minutes not to miss.

Take your seats, the house is now open

Yes, Drew and Sam are back again, and alongside their usual recap of the week’s exciting happenings, and the predictable teasing (accompanied by a well deserved beer or two), the chaps welcome guest number two of this season.

Plunge into episode 8 and meet the lovely Julianne Watling-McCarthy, artistic director of the Stage Door Theatre in Southampton. Listen in as she gives a fascinating and informative insight into the life of a venue - from humble beginnings and the importance of a performance space to its audience and the performers,  to surviving the ‘unwelcome guest’ and re-opening as restrictions are relaxed.

There are some truly amazing shows coming up at The Stage Door as well, and to celebrate that Julianne and the Drewling Samantics boys have two sets of tickets for subscribers to win! Press play and listen carefully to hear how you can enter the amazing giveaway.

Transferable skills? Just let me eat cake!

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but can a dogged actor use old tricks for new purposes?! Drew and Sam return for this week’s episode of Drewling Samantics and that’s exactly the question they’re trying to answer.

Sharing more insights and stories from their careers in the ‘business of show’, the boys explain how they use skills picked up from other (sometimes very obscure and unrelated) jobs, to help give authenticity to their various acting roles. Naturally it hasn’t all been plain sailing though, and nobody can be good at everything - for instance Drew may not be the ideal guest at your next family reunion, and green really isn’t Sam’s colour…

Cupboards, Khazis & Caravans

Back on the road again?! Well… no. Not quite yet. But never fear as the Drewling Samantics boys are back with another episode instead, and this week they’re talking all things touring. As the grip of the ‘unwelcome guest’ begins to loosen, Drew and Sam are looking forward to getting back to work out in the big wide world, but until then the boys are reminiscing - sharing stories of past tours and shows, both in the UK and abroad.

Listen in as discussions cover long theatre tours and one-night gigs in faraway places, weird and wonderful venues, and the sheer joy of getting out and entertaining. They even attempt to solve some tricky touring conundrums, such as: When is a dressing room not a dressing room? What is the best mode of transport in the Swiss Alps? And who got the last round in?

P P P P P

Don’t worry subscribers, the Drewling Samantics boys aren’t desperate for the loo, and their keyboards are fully functional! No, the title this week is merely an acronym - Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance! And that’s the main discussion topic as Drew and Sam mull over keeping on top of their game and being ready to work (even if the unwelcome guest has other ideas for now).

Be it during lockdown or under more normal circumstances, an actor is always busy updating, maintaining, researching, and generally making sure everything is sorted, so the idea of ‘Resting’ couldn’t be further from the truth. But they’re not complaining. It’s all part of the job - especially when Sam is asked to get his kit off, or Drew needs new trainers and is told to get on his bike…

Tune in to hear exactly what all that means and also find out who the lucky winner of last week’s giveaway is!

Sandwiches, Shakespeare & Stripping

Episode three of Drewling Samantics is here, and due to popular demand - predominantly from Drew’s mum - the dynamic (or should that be dramatic?) duo sway slightly from their normal musings and take the time to reveal a little more about their careers and themselves in general.

Throwing caution to the wind, questions at each other, and their dignity out the window, the boys treat us to a more personal insight into their working lives thus far, sharing anecdotes and tales peppered with laughter and disaster. Sit back, tune in and enjoy, as they take a thorough probing into their professional depths - all for our information and delight.

Voices in the Wilderness

Join Drew and Sam in this episode as they reflect back on another week of lockdown life as jobbing actors. From balloons to Bond, and vaccinations to voiceover, the conversation bounces between all manner of topics - combined with the usual sporadic interludes of laughter.

Did Jack Nicholson win an award for Batman? And why exactly is Drew drinking non-alcoholic beer?! Listen in to hear these questions and more pondered upon (and maybe answered) in episode two of Drewling Samantics.
