This week's episode, we are discussing River Horse's Imperial Pumpkin Ale aka Hipp-O-Lantern.

I am joined by the wonderful New Jersey brewery's head brewer Chris Rakow. We had a good time talking about drinking bold beers with lots of warming alcohol in them like RH's spectacular pumpkin brew.

'Tis the season to drink pumpkin ales and Hipp-O-Lantern is always my first thought when the leaves fall from the trees. I know some stay away from the pumpkin for fear of a light beer with an artificial squeeze of flavor in it, but River Horse does not mess around with their fresh pumpkin puree mixed into this 8% plus, hearty brown.

I wrote a quippy paragraph - not unlike the one above - about Hipp-O-Lantern for that short lived men's site I scribed for. Here's what I wrote...

If Oktoberfest had sex with a pumpkin, this beautiful beer would be its love child. Trenton, New Jersey's River Horse brewery has given birth to easily one of the best fall beers one could hope to imbibe with their Hipp-O-Lantern Imperial Pumpkin Ale. This warming mess of malt tops over 8% in alcohol and every inch of it will make your body feel good. With such a rich honey like sweetness blended into the brew its wealth of pumpkin puree, Hipp-O-Lantern can taste almost like a fine mead one would generously sip by a roaring fire. Buy a case or five of it as soon as the temperature drops and enjoy it merrily through 'til Spring.

This week's episode, we are discussing Firestone Walker's Union Jack IPA.

I am joined by FW's brewmaster and partner Matt Brynildson. He is the man, the myth, the legend who breathed life into the nostrils of Paso Robles' dirt to give us Union Jack IPA.

We had a wonderful talk about the evolution of IPAs, how beers change over time, and the endless battle of "bottles vs. cans". Matt's a super interesting and talented guy who has cemented Firestone Walker's reputation as one of the best breweries going.

My wife and I had the chance to see Firestone Walker's ever-expanding setup on our recent trip to Paso Robles, California. FW is growing by leaps and bounds and pretty much own an entire neighborhood in the town.

Paso Robles is rad. It's a hilly, desert with a tough, rustic vibe. The night's cool coastal winds sweep through the area providing a perfect climate to grow wine grapes and olives.

Wine, olives, and badass beer. Go visit Paso Robles. Go visit Firestone Walker. Get your ass to California already!

I am joined by co-founder and brewmaster of Victory - Bill Covaleski - to talk about his warm-weather beater, which has a unique origin story as a joint venture between the Pennsylvania brewery and VisitPhilly.com.

Besides a fascinating convo with Bill where he talks about his time learning to brew beer in Germany, I do ramble on about how I love the beer as the summer seasonal it is, but I also have great nostalgia for Victory's beers as I went to college in Philadelphia - SJU THE HAWK WILL NEVER DIE - and was taught what craft beer could be through Victory's catalogue.

I also tell a slightly embarrassing story that involves me having purple teeth and the former Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter - who was then my councilman. Nutter is the best. Remember when he rapped Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" at his inauguration? Big fan of Mr. Nutter.

Today, we are discussing the fantastic summer seasonal out of San Francisco known to the world as Hell or High Watermelon.

I had the pleasure to talk about said wheat beer with one half of the dynamic duo who made it - Shaun O'Sullivan of 21st Amendment Brewery.

As mentioned in the last text post, I wrote a few articles for a short-lived men's site. My first idea was to write about an article about all the weird people you meet at scotch tasting events. Did that. My second idea was to write an article where I said how much I loved this delicious watermelon beer. And I did just that.

This is what I wrote then...

There are a thousand beers marketed for "summer" drinking, but this is the refreshing twist on backyard barbecue boozing we have all been waiting for. Watermelon is the epitome of seasonal fruit as sweaty men, women, and children gorge on its juicy goodness to cool themselves from Memorial Day to Labor Day. And it's San Francisco's rising star - 21st Amendment Brewery - who, finally, paired that sweet watermelon kick with their delectable beer to provide the must-have drink of the season. What it is in the can is already worth the effort, but 21st Amendment also has the best can artwork out there.

Naturally, when I decided to do this podcast, I had to talk about this beer first and I got to do that with Shaun and I'm delighted that worked out.

If you're not familiar with 21st Amendment Brewery, check out their site 21st-Amendment.com. They have a litany of great IPAs and they're getting wilder by the day with outside of the box beers like Toaster Pastry. It's a catalogue worth your time and tastebuds.
