‘Croc’s on a Saturday was one of the first clubs we started goin to on a regular basis’

who would’ve imagined a little nightclub in darkest Essex, becomes the place to be- attracting kids from all over Essex an London…..

‘i remember going on the opening night, tho I think it was just a soul/jazz funk club then? you had to get your tickets in advance. i got up to the door an the bouncer said “what have you come  as, Co Co the clown?”

with Gary Turner on a Saturday night ?……….

    out come the freaks!….

‘I like to think of the start being more specifically 16/8/80, when DM played the first ever night of ‘The Glamour Club’, not sure what went on in there prior to that

  • DTB3

3rd episode of ‘Drop the Biscuit’

These magic machines (the Voice-O-Graph was probably the best known) were very popular in penny arcades of the 1940’s and 50’s, and like photo booths, they gave players a little something to walk away with. For about thirty-five cents, a songbird in training (or just a kid being a kid) could record a song or a short message. Two minutes was all that technology granted in those days, and voices were laid down on a six-inch cardboard record that kids could then play at home. Believe it or not, a lot of real-life crooners put voice to permanent record this way—before they knew they were real-life crooners!

The International Mutoscope Company manufactured the last recording booth coin-ops in 1968. When portable cassette recorders caught on in the 70’s, the booths started to lose their novelty value. Besides, it was embarrassing when the whole arcade overheard your so-very-unlike-the-King Elvis impression.

Just like a photo booth, you’d plonk your coin in the slot, but instead of posing for some snaps, you’d start speaking.

The idea was that those who were travelling could send a voice message from the location they were visiting – a bit like a sonic postcard!

  • The Grasshopper Mix

No windscreen Kevins or Sharons or Dancing Handbags!! EPIC….

One of my fave venues ever, so many happy memories

Ah yes. Remember it well. Slippery People. Tom Tom Club, erm… ok, well maybe not that well

I think I’m almost certain to have played something by Trouble Funk, plenty of James Brown, and the likes of Stevie Wonder “Superstition”, Stretch “Why Did You Do It” etc (basically all the stuff I still occasionally play out nearly 30 years later!!). Sam Butera’s “Bim Bam” would have been in there too. I also shamefully recall playing Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and Mel & Kim “Respectable”. I fondly remember the night some greasy-haired biker came up to the DJ box and said “Scuse me mate, have you got anything else apart from this disco rubbish? How about some Grateful Dead?” Speechless.

    Road block….

And “Roadblock” by Stop Aching and Waterme (thanks Clare)

DJ Fast Eddie came over to play once..

Yes that was probably the best night of the later aciiiiiieeeeeeed house days. And he was a very nice guy.

the first two tunes me and eugene played were “lets stick together” bryan ferry. and then blondies “heart of glass”. lovely. XX

Ive still got my signed Fast Eddie album!!

Spoonie Gee The Godfather, and then I put a pint of beer in the mixer and that was it..

Two for one drinks! Try getting that anywhere now!

After looking at the date i think my club membership has expired…

Maceo macks across the tracks :)))

Thats the one….epic grasshopper track! Love it.

remembers Sam Moffett 20 min mixes of can you feel it……

I also remember cramming as many people in my mini as humanly possible to get there. Who’s that in the boot? Why, it’s Derek Bennett!

Gwen McRae – all this love that I’m giving

Do u remember the Vivienne Westwood platform shoes loads if people used to wear?

Clare: “Nights” was the actual name of the Grasshopper’s “club” – hence the very clever chess logo. More tunes: Jackson Sisters – I Believe In Miracles, Classical Two – Rap’s New Generation, Schoolly D – Satutday Night, Big Daddy Kane – Wrath Of Kane, Lil Louis – French Kiss, Fast Eddie (again) – Acid Thunder

1st episode of ‘Drop the Biscuit’.

Sweedlund showed me around one day, and in shouts explained how a record is pressed. A pair of stampers, one side for each record, is set into the hissing mouth of a large press, roughly similar in dimension to a small car flipped onto its rear bumper. The bottom of the press’s jaw, holding one stamper, remains fixed, while the roof of its mouth drops closed. Above and behind the mouth, in a plastic tube, round pellets of vinyl whirl around like lottery balls. They then drop into a metal arm containing a screw. Ground up and heated, the pellets are mushed together into a sticky vinyl biscuit that plops out the other side. Twitchy robot arms slap labels to both sides of the biscuit before it’s dropped onto the centre of the bottom stamper. The roof of the mouth slowly closes down and the vinyl is squeezed flat between the stampers.
