  • Daily Fill: Drum Lesson - Turn Your Beat Around
Hey Everyone! Welcome back to another Daily Fill Drum Lesson! In this week's episode of Drum Lessons with Scott Jackson, Scott explains some simple methods on how to learn from your mistakes. Furthermore, he talks about not dwelling on mistakes as a negative, but rather embracing those mistakes.

This lesson is more about your mindset. I titled it "Turn Your Beat Around" because that phrase is a metaphor explaining that you can't be negative. You need to turn that around and be positive. Also, it's a clever way to hopefully make Gloria Estefan's song "Turn the Beat Around" relevant again... Hahaha! Okay, serious talk time... As musicians, we automatically pick out all of the "BAD" things we do, and we beat ourselves up about it over and over. Instead, we should do the opposite. Let me tell you a short story. The brain can control anything we do, and how we feel. The brain controls our focus, our heart beat, our lungs, our eyes, ears, and everything else. So, if we constantly beat ourselves about about mistakes. What do you think will happen? I can tell you. I ran into this about 5 years ago... I was getting hypercritical of my playing, and I was being pulled in a lot of different ways. I wanted to play drum set, but I was learning all of the other percussion instruments too. I did not have the time to invest behind the drum set. On top of that, I was hypercritical and beating myself up which leads to two things. Worrying about time constraints leads to stress, and beating yourself up leads to self-doubt. I quickly spiraled into depression. Nothing serious... but for about a month I was feeling really down, burnt out, and struggling to find the passion I once had for music. How did I overcome that? First, I looked at my mistakes and realized they are things I can fix. Second, I stopped beating myself up.

    Key Points From Today's Lesson:

    1. Positive Attitude: This is the NUMBER ONE RULE to being good at anything. Be positive ALL THE TIME! You do not suck, it just needs more time.

    2. Use Recordings:  You can coach yourself out of it by listening back to recordings of yourself performing. Realize your mistakes and just fix them because mistakes can be fixed.

    3. Seek Guidance: Find a teacher or a coach that can help you through those concept that are effecting you. We are available here at Drummers I Like for coaching calls and lessons. We are more than happy to help you.

    4. Commit: You have to commit to the change that you are seeking. It will take time, effort, and work, but in the long run when you achieve your goals. You will realize it was worth it.

That is it for today's lesson! Enjoy! Go Practice!

  • Daily Fill #121: The side hustle struggle

Welcome to the Now Wednesday edition of the Daily Fill with our Owner and founder Richard Ducat! Every Tuesday Richard gives us a dose of motivation, guidance, life hacks, marketing tips, and more!
WHATS UP DRUMTREPRENEURS! We are back with another entry into the drumtrepreneur artist series as we chat side hustles with my close friend Darien Guy. Darien and I have been friends for the past 6 months and since getting to know him I have begun to get his true sense of entrepreneurship as he slowly let me into his world of side hustles and cymbal operations.

    Big Points from today's show:

One step at a time: Darien gives us a quick breakdown into his childhood and the inspiration behind his entrepreneurial ways. We also get a deep sense of his drumming background and skillset as he breaks out his arsenal packed full of drum knowledge and experience.

Career Overload: As we begin to dig into Darien's story we start pulling out a laundry list of career paths and accolades including being a high school teacher, touring with national recording artists, and managing a cymbal company

The negotiator: As we get into Darien's current side hustle Smyrna Cymbals we start to get a true understanding of the in's and out's of acquiring, developing, and launching a cymbal company.

Darien's ability to manage a multitude of companies, relationships, and passions with a clear track for success speaks to his true level of competence in business. I really want drummers to get a clear idea of the big picture which is that drumming is not going to pay the bills. It's going to take multiple jobs and a inventor type mindset that's not afraid to work 21 hour days. You have to prepare for the big things like failing, getting things wrong, pissing people off, and feeling like quitting. The idea is to not let those things stop you and be prepared to fail 100 times without giving a damn. That's a drumtrepreneur.

We will be back next with the final installment of the artist series. I have big plans for this show going into 2018 with a handful of new series to explore and new journeys to take!

  • Daily Fill 120: Drum Lesson – How and Why To Record Your Practice
Hey Everyone! Welcome back to another Daily Fill Drum Lesson! In this week's episode of Drum Lessons with Scott Jackson, Scott explains why to record yourself and the steps you can take to make recording yourself part of your practice.

Recording Yourself is the most efficient form of analysis out there. I preach on this because it gives your real time instant feedback! You can find some great devices for low cost that can set you up for success in every aspect of what you do. The process, your routine, how you sound, what you play, your challenges, and your successes. Here are 4 reason what you should take away from analyzing your recordings. Formulate HOW you sound example: the tone of the drums and cymbals. Formulate WHAT you play on the drums example: grooves, fills, chops, soloing, etc... You get feedback on CHALLENGES you are trying to overcome example: maybe making your paradiddles more articulate and cleaner. Feedback on your SUCCESSES example: your time and groove was solid during that drum cover you are working on.

    Key Points From Today's Lesson:

    1. Where to Record Yourself: Record EVERYTHING you do! Personal Practice, Rehearsals, Concerts, Recording Studios, and Recording yourself within a recording studio.

    2. How To Record Yourself: Scott talks about how to select a device that can help you get great audio quality for a low cost. Also, audio is a must have, but if you can get a video recorder with great audio then you are set for multiple avenues in your career. You can start posting on social media, YouTube, and start promoting yourself.

    3. Why You Should Record Yourself: You start to find out HOW you sound. You start to recognize WHAT you like to hear yourself play. Example Fills, grooves, chops, etc... Feedback for overcoming Challenges. Feedback for finding SUCCESSES. Successes will help you fine tune your process of learning, organizing your time, and ultimately will help you streamline your routines.

That is it for today's lesson! Enjoy! Go Practice!

  • #77: Mike Ciprari - The Stepping Stones To Success
What's up Drumtrepreneurs! Welcome back to another episode of the Drummers I Like Podcast! This week we are chatting with Mike Ciprari, Co-founder of SJC drums and the epitome of what we here at Drummers I Like consider a true "drumtrepreneur".  Coming from an Entrepreneurial family that had plenty of experience creating success Mike was built from the ground up to handle the serious up's and down's of business. From creating his first warehouse for drum building in his grandma's basement to sneaking into Vans Warped Tour for almost two weeks straight pretending to be a paying vendor Mike has done it all. On today's show, we really dig deep into Mike's background, SJC's rise to success, his journey being on the television show the Profit and everything he learned from super entrepreneur Marcus Lemonis.

    About our guest:

Mike Ciprari is the Co-founder of SJC drums, an entrepreneur, and most importantly a loving Father and Husband. His work ethic and attention to detail for each and everyone of his customers has been the beating heart behind SJC drums and their rapid growth over the last 15 years.

    Key Points from today's episode:

    * You've got to trust your instinct: Mike takes us back to the beginning days of his musical career as he found punk rock, fell in love with 311 and started to invest his adolescent time into understanding the in's and outs of starting his first punk band.
    * Take me away from the norm: As he and his brother grew up it was a true competitive spirit that defined their ability to truly succeed when two brilliant minds started building the company that would change the percussion game for the better.
    * You got to come original: Mike takes up deep into his experience on The Profit, meeting Marcus Lemonis and refresh being on that show really gave him. Something that really stands out in this section is Mike's deep appreciation towards the idea that when he met Marcus it felt like his journey had just begun.

Mike was hands down one of my favorite guests of all time as we truly bridged the gap between drummer and business owner gauging a true understanding of what it takes to an entrepreneur and most importantly a drumtrepreneur

Welcome to the Now Wednesday edition of the Daily Fill with our Owner and founder Richard Ducat! Every Tuesday Richard gives us a dose of motivation, guidance, life hacks, marketing tips, and more!
WHATS UP DRUMTREPRENEURS! Today we chat with a very close friend of mine, a serious inspiration, and a big part of the reason I had opportunities in the music industry. @devjent gets into some pretty dirty details as he breaks down the pitfalls he endured and the protection he didn’t give himself when he decided to sign his life away for an opportunity that was not what he expected.

    Big Points from today's show:

The Deal of a lifetime: Devin breaks down the story behind his swift rise to stardom as he wheeled and dealed with some of the industries biggest power players.

Read the Fine Print: Devin gives us some insight into contractual obligations and learning to read people in the moment. He emphasizes that artists need to keep emotions aside and really focus on the fine print if they want true career longevity.

Paying it forward: I dig deep into the passions involved with Devin's career change and decision to start managing and guiding up and coming artists.

Our hopes with today's show were to give our drumtrepreneurs a true insight into what happens when you don't cover your tracks and protect yourself from the bigger challenges that may come with any decision you make in this extremely volatile industry. I want to thank Devin once again for coming on and telling his story to our listeners and allowing us some real insight into the darker side of the music industry. Since those days Devin has spent his time coaching bands and artists on the methods and practices behind the bands of today. His true passion to help guide others from making the same mistakes he did and truly show them a path to success and growth in this ever-evolving music industry.

  • Daily Fill #118: Drum Lessons – Organize Your Practice Time
Hey Everyone! Welcome back to another Lesson! In this week's episode of Drum Lessons with Scott Jackson, Scott explains how to stay focused while you are practicing to make sure your mind stays SHARP and FOCUSED the entire time you practice each day!

Breaking up your practice time into smaller or larger time segments is a great process to have in your practice routine. Each day the amount of time you spend on a concept might change, however; the key here is to organize that time. This organization of time into segments will keep your mind focused. How? Why? Well, because our mind is wired to detect nuance, so if we are changing up what we practice ever 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. This will help our brain stay IN the moment so we don't get side tracked. As drummers, it is easy to get distracted or be overwhelmed with what to do. Well, this concept of creating Time Segments for your Practice will help you not feel so overwhelmed. Also, it might take sometime to create longer segments for yourself just remember to put away any distractions that will get in the way of your practice. The reason longer segments may take time is you have to train your mind to focus for that amount of time

    Key Points From Today's Lesson:

    1. 5 Areas of Practice: Technique, Coordination, Fills/Solo Chops, Improvise, Recording Analysis

    2. Analyze Recordings: Remember to set aside time to analyze your recordings

    3. Take Short Breaks: In between each segment, remember to take a short 2-5 minute break to reset the mind.

That is it for today's lesson! Enjoy! Go Practice!
