On this edition of Century of Lies: European School Survey Project on

Alcohol and Other Drugs. The European School Survey Project on Alcohol

and Other Drugs, ESPAD for short, is the world\'s largest

cross-national research project on adolescent substance use and other

risk behaviors. The 2024 ESPAD report, released in May 2025, marks 30

years of monitoring adolescent risky behaviors across Europe, with 37

countries currently participating. The focus remains on substance use

behaviors and trends, but this edition introduced a new focus on

mental well-being and prevention activities, recognizing the growing

importance of these aspects in shaping health outcomes. The European

Union Drugs Agency held a webinar recently to discuss the report\'s

main findings. On this week\'s Century we hear portions of that

webinar, including presentations by Dr. Sabrina Molinaro, Senior

Research Director and Head of Epidemiology and the Health Services

Research Department at Italy\'s Institute of Clinical Physiology -

National Research Council, and Coordinator of the European School

Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs; and Dr. Elisa Benedetti, a

Researcher at the Laboratory of Epidemiology at Italy\'s Institute of

Clinical Physiology - National Research Council and Project Manager of

ESPAD.

On this edition of Century of Lies: Support, Don\'t Punish: A Public

Health and Human Rights Based Approach to Drug Policy. The Fifty-Ninth

Session of the UN Human Rights Council took place from June 16 to July

8. A number of side events were held in conjunction with the HRC

meetings. One of those side events was entitled Support, Don\'t Punish:

Advancing Towards a Health and Human Rights-Based Approach to Drug

Policy. Recent developments within the United Nations have

strengthened the call for public health- and human rights-based

approaches to drugs. This side event took stock of progress in

fulfilling the right to health for people who use drugs, particularly

through harm reduction strategies. It also explored opportunities for

reform at both national and international levels. This week on Century

we\'ll hear portions of that side event, including presentations by Dr.

Tlaleng Mofokeng, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health; Zaved

Mahmood, Human Rights Officer at the Office of the UN High

Commissioner for Human Rights; Ahmed Said, Coordinator at the African

Network of People who Use Drugs; and Marie Nougier, Head of Research

and Communications at the International Drug Policy Consortium.
