Department. Host Doug McVay is joined in conversation by Professor

Kathryn Hawk, MD, MHS. Dr. Hawk is an attending physician in the Yale

New Haven Hospital Emergency Department and an Associate Professor in

the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Yale School of Public

Health and the Program in Addiction Medicine. Dr. Hawk spoke at the

88th annual meeting of the College on Problems of Drug Dependence,

which was held June 13 through 17 in Portland, Oregon. Plus, an

interview with Dr. Fred Oerther, a retired physician turned organic

farmer and political activist. Dr. Oerther was one of the chief

petitioners for the Oregon Marijuana Initiative campaigns in the

1980s. The interview took place at Fred\'s end of life celebration, which was

held at his home in mid-June.

On this edition of Century: The Math of Fentanyl. Host Doug McVay is

joined in conversation by Morgan Godvin, a researcher, writer, harm

reduction advocate, and co-author an article entitled \"Estimating the

daily milligrams of morphine equivalent of illicit fentanyl use in Los

Angeles: Clinical and epidemiological implications,\" which was

published in the August 2026 edition of the journal Drug and Alcohol

Dependence. They spoke at the eighty-eighth annual meeting of the

College on Problems of Drug Dependence, which took place June 13

through 17 in Portland, Oregon. Plus, the Joint United Nations

Programme against HIV/AIDS has released a new report which shows that

a combination of factors is threatening to reverse years of gains in

the AIDS response. Angeli Achrekar, Assistant Secretary-General of

UNAIDS, discussed the report at a news conference June 12.
