DTVC Podcast

In this episode I'm joined by Chris Kacvinsky from Bulletproof Action as we discuss "American Ninja 2: The Confrontation." We get into why this one works, from the Guns N' Roses "Move to the City," to the brawl at the Blind Beggar's Bar, to all the hot, ninja action. This is classic you came for.

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back, this time for our Eric Roberts birthday double feature, as we look at his two Top Gunner films for the Asylum. In the first one Roberts plays a grizzled colonel leading a training base under siege from the Russians; then in the second one, he's the president, trying to avoid WWIII. Finally, in our Spotlight on a Fight, we look at the end fight from the classic "Undefeatable."

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the Predator franchise with the two Alien vs. Predator films. With the first one, I talk about the gap in time between Predator films, and how this was a film Predator fans were waiting for, but maybe not so much Aliens fans. I also chat about Predators that aren't hunters, like engineers and anthropologists. For the second one, I talk about where this one might miss the mark from the first one, but despite the poor critic reception, still did well at the box office.

In this episode I'm joined once again by Mitch from the Video Vacuum, as we look the Brucesploitation classic, "The Dragon Lives Again." What other movie can say Bruce Lee (Siu-Lung Leung aka Bruce Leong) teams up with Popeye, Kane, and the One-Armed Swordsman to take down Dracula, the Godfather, the Exorcist, Clint Eastwood, Zatoichi, and James Bond? Avengers eat your heart out.

Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time 2006's "Attack Force." We get into the history on this one, with how Seagal and screenwriting buddy Joe Halpin made one movie, but the distribution company wanted something else, so it was re-edited, reshot, and redubbed. Was worth it? Especially with the person they had dubbing over Seagal's voice?

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're starting our look at the Predator franchise with the first and second films. With the first one, I talk about this film's influence on me as an action fan, and its enduring legacy. For the second one, I talk about why I love this one, despite it not having the reputation the first one had

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for two more straight to streamers, this time we're looking at a third Daniel Zirilli film, "Hollow Point," starring Luke Goss and Jay Mohr. Is this one closer to "Phoenix" or "Invincible" in quality? And then for the second one, we look at the Tito Ortiz/Cris Cyborg actioner, "Operation Black Ops," and try to see if we can figure out is going on with that one. Finally, for our Spotlight on a Fight, we look at Stallone v Stone Cold Steve Austin in "Expendables."

In this episode I'm joined by Rich Hawes from the DTV Digest to discuss two Gary Daniels PM classics, "Rage" and "Recoil". In the opening hour or so, we discuss the current state of DTV action, and how the shift away from physical media is affecting that. From there we dig in on what makes "Rage" and "Recoil" such great films, from Daniels as the lead, to Spiro Razatos's action direction, breaking each one down individually.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're continuing our look at the MCU Phase 2 with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man." Before that, I talk about the flop that was the 2015 "Fantastic Four" film. Then with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" I look at how that film compares with the first one, and how James Spader as Ultron's voice might be my favorite baddie so far. Finally, with "Ant-Man," I look at this as almost an after-thought film sandwiched between the Avengers film and the first film of Phase 3, "Captain America: Civil War," and then I further my thought from last week about how the MCU audience has aged out some, and how that affected the floor for movies like this going forward.

In this episode Sean Malloy of "I Must Break This Podcast" is back, and we're discussing the Van Damme film "Replicant." We get into a couple different aspects, one being Van Damme's performance and decision to take a role like this--or two roles, as it was. Another is the shrinking DTV action budget, and how a movie like this may not be made this well today.
