While being an autistic can have its talents like being organized and ritual, we have to remember that this being autistic is of spectrum manner and as such not everyone operates that way. Sometimes we can be the complete opposite.

As I shared on the majority of my social media channels the other day, I received my first dose of the COVID-19 Vaccine. While many who are in desiring to be back to normal life long for a vaccine, they are often the ones to judge, “why do they get to get a vaccine compared to me?” The truth is, we all want to be on the race to herd immunity and yes like many things of life that may seem unfair, we don’t know the true story of why one is getting vaccinated.

On March 10, 2010 I started a new endeavor as a Consumer Satisfaction Team Member. Although I didn’t know it, this job would require me to oftentimes interact with complete strangers. For several years, my work schedule was sporadic at best. I struggled with the days that I had to go to work because anxiety built up continually. Eventually I would become comfortable with my work, it would provide me additional opportunities and now is second nature for me.

When evening comes, I realize that it is time to take my pills because I consciously look at that clock because that certain hour is nearing and I know it. A lot of times I think “What if I just skip this one time?” I am ashamed to admit that I’ve done it and while I spend the majority of the evening on a manic high because of my inability to sleep. I am often reminded how others see the ways I act in the coming days and then I know that I must medicate.

So, this week partly I have been focusing on self-regulation. This topic has sparked an interest in me because I have been hearing about it from other advocates and their autistics have been doing this. I, being diagnosed over twenty years ago and now learning things on my own am discovering these terms as we go along. I had an epiphany of when and why I need to recognize when to self-regulate on a more constituent basis.

In the last few months since becoming independent again, I have noticed benchmarks that I continue to achieve as time progresses. While they may seem little to some, for me they can mean the world because it is proof that I can adult and know how to properly take care of myself. If there is any advice, I can give to anyone raising a autistic child, it simply is that knowledge is power. The more they know, the more sound their future will be.

Loving the sun, and just near a week and a half until Daylight Saving time begins here in the US, the sun is rising before I head out on the days I do and they sun is setting after six (finally). I also think with the snow melted and the clouds opening up some last week has cheered my mood, for the most part. Finally, I experienced a weekend where I didn’t shutdown a lot. Instead I was busy getting things done for once finally! However, I did spend a great deal of time hyper focused on my special interests and that consumed a lot of time, along with straightening up.

As we are nearing a year anniversary of being under the pandemic, many I know are hitting a wall. It is when we are just tired. Tired of daunting the PPE, tired of following additional rules, just plain tired of everything. We, as in everyone want to be back to the way things were, so we can be happier and see a better time ahead.

What a difference a week will make, or a few days for that matter! While here in Southwestern Pennsylvania should be used to rough Februarys, we haven’t experienced them as continually snowy in many years. Being independent, along with being in a national pandemic makes it more unpleasant to experience. However, as I am writing this week’s wellness update, we are making changes to the betterment of my physical health. I am getting more sleep, and good steady sleep.
