Dwellynn Show - Financial Freedom through Real Estate Investing

My real estate journey began when my husband and I were living in a poorly converted garage. It did its best to serve us well, but the building was hanging on for dear life.  We discovered we were expecting our first child, and as you can imagine, this arrangement was not going to work for our growing family. We had to spring into action.

My landlord suggested we buy a house that has a basement apartment. We were short on money but quickly realized by renting out the basement apartment, we could live for cheap or even free. So we dove in!

The next strategy we tried was to buy a broken-down house and live there while we fix it then sell or rent and move on to the next house. It seemed like a pretty sweet deal. Living in a constant construction zone wasn’t exactly comfortable, but it gave us the skills and knowledge we needed. Over time, my husband and I began diversifying our involvement in real estate, going from flips and rentals to eventually group investing in multifamily.

The bigger the properties got, the more I realized there was no way I could do this without a growing network. I had to hone the skill of being intentional with my energy.

Mark has considerable experience in partnership formations and operations, project planning and implementation, asset management and management oversight, landlord-tenant and rent-control issues, risk management, and zoning and building department matters. Before forming his own commercial brokerage and investment business in 1994, Mark worked in the San Francisco office of Marcus & Millichap, subsequently co-founding Property Resource Group (real estate brokerage) and Quantum Land Company (development).

Mark earned a B.A. with High Honors in English Literature from San Francisco State University and an M.A. in English and American Literature from Brandeis University, which he attended as a University Scholar and Fellow.

I was inspired at a young age to work in real estate development by watching my father build and renovate homes. However, it wasn't until I had been working in the VC/PE industry for over 12 years that I actually got to put my passion to work. Throughout my winding journey, I have accumulated knowledge in architecture, financial analysis and construction. Matthew was raised in Round Rock, Texas where he loved playing sports and competing in anything imaginable with his younger brother. It was around the age of 13 that Matt saw his single mother start to invest in real estate and he was immediately drawn to the industry. At the age of 17 Matt became a licensed realtor and worked through college at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. He earned his degree but his mind was made up that real estate was the path for him. He went on to earn a Masters of Real Estate from Texas A&M in College Station and started a career in commercial real estate. In 2015, alongside his wife Lexi, Matt started TRE Homes Property Management and three short years later he left commercial real estate to grow his company full-time. In 2020, he merged his property management company with another industry leader. He then doubled down on growing his brokerage, Teifke Real Estate.
