The topic for today’s article will be the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins barely missed the 2020 NFL playoffs as they were the final team left out in the AFC. They finished the season with a quiet 10 – 6 record. What also (not so quietly) occurred is the fact that Ryan Fitzpatrick was benched for Tua Tagovailoa after Week 6 when the Dolphins were 3 – 3. I’m not going to comment on what the Dolphins should or shouldn’t have done. Clearly they found success for the rest of the season as they went 7 – 3 after the initial benching. What I am going to say is that I found it to be a strange move. More importantly, this seems to be a theme for Fitz, especially over the past few seasons. I’m not sure what the stigma behind him as a starting NFL quarterback is, but there is clearly something. Remember back in 2018 when Fitzpatrick and Jameis Winston split the season. More accurately, Fitz started seven games and Winston started nine games. Neither were impressive as far as a winning percentage goes. Fitz went 2 – 5 as a starter and Winston went 3 – 6 as a starter. The fact is that neither of these players were getting the job done in the win column, but they were getting it done for fantasy owners. That’s really the most frustrating part. In 2018, Fitz was on pace for roughly 4,700 yards, 34 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. In fact, if you combine both Fitzpatrick and Winston’s stats for the year, this is what they would look like…

The New England Patriots will be the focus today. It would be an understatement to say the Pats had a bad 2020 season. And it’s not even that it was that terrible of a season. The Bills were far and away the best team in the division although the Dolphins had a chance to sneak into the playoffs in Week 17. Most of Buffalo’s success came through the air. They passed almost 62 percent of their plays which ranks 11th among all NFL teams in 2020. The biggest success in their passing game was the newfound connection between Stefon Diggs and Josh Allen. I’m not going to give the full stats for these two because Diggs is going to appear later on in one of my comparisons. I’m going to get through two comps today, but first we have one bit of news.

Apologies to Nigel Tufnel for stealing his line and if you don’t get the title, then please go watch the classic movie This Is Spinal Tap. Dynasty Owner really did have 11 start-up drafts that took place this past weekend and hopefully everyone is excited to learn what happened in them. Let’s get going and take a look at the highs, the lows and everything in between.

In anticipation of the first 2021 Dynasty Owner start-up drafts on May 8th, it’s important that Dynasty Owners are aware of new salary figures for players that will be in effect this year and in future years. There are many ways that players are acquired by NFL teams and sign their contracts, and then there are some that sign contract extensions or restructure them.

With Dynasty Owner rookie drafts two weeks away its time to start thinking about the players that will go in the third round, or potentially undrafted. I like to call these players lottery tickets or hidden gems. As rebuilding owners, you should try and load up on as many of these players as possible because you shouldn’t be holding onto veterans whose ceiling is severely limited. The lottery tickets you want to target are young players who have possible paths to playing time which almost always tend to be rookies on bad teams. If you look at the Detroit Lions roster for example, you will see the wide receiver depth chart is absolutely wide open, which is something you want to attack after the draft, or in the third, if necessary.
