The Jaguars are the envy of the NFL. Well, that’s kind of true and false. At this exact moment, I would say they are in a pretty enviable spot. They are about to acquire one of the most hyped quarterbacks of my lifetime. They were not always in this spot though, not even by the Jets. Starting in the second half of the season, the Jaguars looked as if they were going to cruise to a 2nd or 3rd overall pick.

The Jets then decided that in Week 15, they didn’t want to be winless on the season. In Week 15 and 16, they won two games in a row, and both teams that they beat made the playoffs. Now, I would never openly root or advise that a team should purposely lose a game, but if there was ever a time to do it, I think this was it. I can guarantee you I would have been wanting a winless season if I were a Jets fan. Regardless, Jacksonville’s lone win came in Week 1 and they are in sole possession of the Trevor Lawrence Lottery Ticket.

You know what else they have? They have the most favorable cap situation of any NFL team. They are 70 million dollars under the cap at this moment. Expect quite a few moves by Jacksonville this offseason and in the off seasons to come. They won’t turn into a contending team overnight or over a year, but they have every opportunity to begin this rebuild and turn it into a success.

One of the top running backs in last year’s draft class until he decided to go back to college, Travis Etienne’s draft stock is a bit more varied this year. Some will still have him as their RB1 or RB2 in the class, but a less-than-stellar season has many pointing out his flaws and dropping him below the new and exciting running backs. Is Etienne being overanalyzed as a prospect or is he actually not as elite of a prospect as some once thought?

Travis Etienne leaves college football as one of the most productive running backs of all time. Over the course of his four year career he amassed almost 5,000 rushing yards, scored 78 total touchdowns, and caught over 100 passes. In 2018 and 2019, Etienne hit over 1,600 rushing yards each season while averaging nearly eight yards per carry. He stayed in college an extra year though, and in 2020 didn’t even hit 1,000 yards and his average fell to 5.4 YpC. Despite worsened rushing numbers, Etienne has a career-high in receptions during the 2020 season with 48 catches for 588 yards. At the end of the day, Etienne was a highly-productive running back and brings a lot of versatility to any NFL offense.

With the start of the new NFL and Dynasty Owner league year only a week away (or less if you aren’t reading this on Friday), we still have time to continue looking at how Dynasty Owners drafted in 2020. Using the data from the 2020 Dynasty Owner drafts from all leagues, we have looked at several measures already to help Dynasty Owners in a 2021 start-up draft think ahead to their Draft Day. The first article (https://dynastyowner.com/2021/02/how-to-draft-a-dynasty-owner-championship-team-part-i/) analyzed data on three measures that didn’t involve individual players, positions or salaries (type of league, when to draft and what draft position to get in your start-up draft). In the second article (https://dynastyowner.com/2021/03/how-to-draft-a-dynasty-owner-championship-team-part-ii/), the data showed that Dynasty Owners who picked a player with a lower salary in the first round were more likely to win their League title than those who drafted higher salary players. Teams who drafted players with salaries under $5 million more likely to overcome having a player miss a significant portion of the season or not play as well as projected than teams who drafted a player in the upper salary ranges.

With this information, we can start to look at the individual players who were the best ones to draft in 2020. This will give Dynasty Owners insight into who they should be considering taking in their 2021 Dynasty Owner start-up draft. Due to new salaries, it may not be the same players this year, but a player with a similar profile as those who led their Dynasty Owners teams in 2020. The three major questions that we are going to answer this week are:

- What players were the “best” first round draft pick?
- Which players were drafted by the most Dynasty Owner league winners?
- Which players were drafted by the fewest Dynasty Owner league winners?

As ironic as this may sound, I believe I just received one of the best orphan teams anyone will see and really defies the stereotype of orphan teams always being bad. The main issue with this is I am wanting to strip the team down to nothing and build it up with all of you and I just don’t see any positives from destroying what is already a phenomenal roster, luckily, I have a backup plan.

Before we get into the backup plan, I want to give you a bit of perspective on why we are going this route instead. I want to first start by breaking down the roster I was given so you can really understand why we are going with plan B instead. Below are the players on the roster by position.

I did leave a few players off the list, most notably Auden Tate and the kickers. As you can see this team doesn’t need much work outside of tweaking a few minor things. The main two moves I am looking to make before the 2021 season are trading Wilson and Golladay for future picks, or young talent. In this league Prescott and Cooper are free agents, so by trading Wilson and Golladay I pick up whatever value I get in return on top of Prescott and Cooper in free agency.

I am hoping trading off these two for Cooper and Prescott will be enough to put this team over the top and make a real run at The Chase for the Ring! Enough about this orphan team, lets jump into plan B. Plan B will be to input my original rebuild team into this series instead of the team listed above. I have mentioned this team in previous articles, the cause of the rebuild is the fact that I severely underestimated the quarterback position in Dynasty Owner and injuries. Below I will go in depth into the team we will be building together by position, as well as listing all of the future draft assets I have acquired for the team.

The time has come for the start of the series I have been waiting for, the orphan rebuild series. I am really hoping this series will be a lot of fun and a lot of you will join in and provide some input on specific moves. The Tennessee Titans are the next team up for discussion. As I mentioned in my previous video, they finished atop the AFC South, but were eliminated in the Wild Card round. For our speculation today, I have three players that are rosterable in Dynasty Owner leagues that are soon to be free agents. They are…

• Jonnu Smith
• Corey Davis
• Anthony Firkser

One of these last names is not like the other. (I had to take a break from football to look up the stats on this. It turns out Davis and Smith both find their way into the Top 10 for most common last names in the USA. However, Firkser finds itself in the 282,354 spot. Apparently, there are only 63 people in the USA with that last name.) My apologies, but I found that interesting especially when you look at the other names, I’m comparing him to.

So first up we have Jonnu Smith and Anthony Firkser. Both of these players are tight ends, and they both obviously hindered the others' production throughout the season. Jonnu finished the 2020 season as the TE15 with essentially two missed games due to a knee injury. Smith was wildly inconsistent throughout the year. He posted only two games that were above 13.6 fantasy points while he had six games with less than 10. Not exactly the most reliable player you want heading your tight end committee, but I suppose there were very few you could say that about in 2020. Regardless, Smith’s rookie contract is expiring, and he will look to make around $8,000,000 per year according to Spotrac. Smith is 25 years old and seems to be reaching the prime of his career. As I stated, he had a very rocky 2020 season. He was targeted only 65 times, and that ranks 18th among tight ends. The Titans actually have a decent cap situation heading into 2021. While they are below the league average for space (a little over $15,000,000), they should have no problem retaining Smith with relative ease if they’d like to.

In today’s video I want to touch on what I feel is the most overlooked aspect of rebuilding, which is buying players just before they breakout, you know the trendy buys of the fantasy world. When you obtain a player at the perfect time it puts you into a huge advantage as an owner. An example of this would be trading a 2nd or 3rd round pick for a player who finishes near the top of his position the following year.

What this will do for you as an owner Is one of two things, have a solid player/star on your roster that is cheap to acquire, or flip the player and get more draft capital in return, either way it’s a positive advantage for your team. Sometimes these players can be very easy to spot, but often by the time you realize they’ll be a star the owner has already realized it as well and the price you will be asked to pay will be much more significant. Below you will find the 10 players I think are due for massive breakouts in the coming years and my reasoning on why!

An offseason draft riser, Michael Carter was part of a potent college offense at North Carolina and had another top talent sharing the backfield. Javonte Williams may be the current darling in the eyes of the media but Carter is running fast under the radar and rising up draftniks’ Big Boards. Despite his size, he’s an all-around back who has the capabilities to produce at the next level, but how will NFL teams project his next level outlook?

Coming into North Carolina as a 3-star freshman, Carter took on a significant role right away. In his first season he ran for 558 yards and scored 8 touchdowns on the ground. The next year he saw less volume but averaged 7.1 yards per carry and caught 25 passes. Carter really set the scene his Junior year with 1,000+ yards on the ground and 20+ receptions. All culminating with his 2020 Senior season, where he finished with 1,245 rushing yards (8 ypc), 11 total touchdowns, and 25 receptions for 267 yards (10.7 YpR). These efficient numbers are only downplayed because of Javonte Williams’ total touchdown count of 22, which was more a consequence of volume than talent. Williams and Carter are neck in neck in my personal rankings, but they do bring vastly different play styles to their future NFL teams.

Last week, we started to look at how Dynasty Owners drafted in 2020 by analyzing data on three measures that didn’t involve individual players, positions or salaries (type of league, when to draft and what draft position to get in your startup draft). We found that owners in $50 cash leagues were more likely to make it into the Top 25 in the Chase for the Ring, while those in $100 leagues were less likely.

Waiting until close to the start of the season to draft worked for our 2020 Chase for the Ring champion Viktor, but on average, drafting early was actually better than drafting late as June drafts produced the most Top 25 teams. Finally, we examined draft position and found that four spots (#6, #8, #1 and #11) were better to draft from in 2020 as they produced a higher percentage of League winners, while three spots (#12, #7 and #2) were at the opposite end and produced fewer League winners.

None of the data were overwhelming, but they started to answer some basic questions that might help you win your League and score enough points to make it into the Top 25 of the Chase for the Ring.

There is more data to analyze and more questions to answer. Here are the remaining questions and draft evaluation strategies that haven’t been answered yet from the first How To video:

•What position should you draft with your first pick?
•What players were the “best” first round draft pick?
•How much in salary should your first pick make?
•Which players were drafted by the most Dynasty Owner league winners?
•Should you use all of your salary cap during the draft or leave extra cap room to make post-draft Free Agent Auction pickups?
•Are there any draft strategies that worked better than others in 2020?

This week, we’ll look at the positions and salaries of first round draft picks in 2020 Dynasty Owner leagues and see if any position was drafted by more League winners. We’ll also see if the player’s salary made a difference in a team’s chances of winning their League.

Up until this point, I have only written about NFC teams. Well, in March we are going to talk about the AFC South, and we’re going to start with the team that finished tied with the best record. They made the 2020 playoffs thanks to the seventh playoff spot. Of course I am talking about the Colts. Here is a table that shows the entire division…

Overall, this is a pretty typical division. Two teams dominated the season while two others had extremely disappointing years. We will get to the other three teams this month, but today I want to focus on the Colts. Let’s get started because there is a lot to talk about.

The Colts have seven free agents that should/could be rostered in Dynasty Owner leagues. As always, I need to mention that this is a subjective metric that I am using to define each player as “rosterable.”
