As parents and caregivers of dyslexic kids, it’s important to try to set bigger-picture and longer-term goals to make progress in moving towards better skills, as well as more independence and self-advocacy. Otherwise, it’s easy to get lost in the busyness of everyday life. However, it can sometimes feel like something pressing is cropping up to deal with in the moment–on a weekly, or even a daily–that is more urgent. How can we resolve this tension?
We're Sonja and Nick, parents of a dyslexic kid and your guides on this journey. We created Dyslexia Journey because we know how isolating it can feel when your child struggles with reading and school isn't helping. Every episode brings practical strategies, expert interviews with psychologists, educators, and reading specialists, plus real stories from dyslexic adults who've thrived. Whether you're a parent navigating diagnosis, IEPs, and accommodations, or a dyslexic adult looking for community, this show is for you. Got a question or a guest idea? We were honored to sit down with Dr. David Hurford, who has researched dyslexia and the science of reading for his entire career, to learn about his research, his books, and his work with dyslexic children.
David P. Hurford, Ph.D. is the executive director of the Center for Reading and is the founder and manager of the Center for the Assessment and Remediation of Reading Difficulties (CARRD, Inc.) a nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals with dyslexia to become competent readers. He has been publishing on the identification and remediation of reading difficulties and related topics since the late 1980s. He has authored reading curricula designed to prevent reading difficulties in kindergarten (Secret Codes) and first grade (Advanced Codes). The Center for Reading and CARRD, Inc. use his identification and remediation strategies to provide high- quality and accurate assessments and successful interventions for children and adults who have dyslexia and reading difficulties. He contributed to the writing of the Kansas Blueprint on Literacy (SB 438) which was passed into law last April. He serves on the Literacy Advisory Committee that was formed from that legislation. Hurford’s interests include dyslexia, reading difficulties, attentional difficulties including ADHD, educational research, statistics, and special education law.
