Last week in Boston nearly 4 thousand Avaya users, distributors and solution

vendors congregated together for the IAUG 2012 Global Education Conference. There were several Avaya DevConnect E911 vendors attending the show, with 911ETC, 911 Enable, Conveyant Systems and RedSky Technologies all participating on The Great E911 Debate, which was held on Sunday afternoon.

What will the NG 911 FirstNet look like? This core network will provide connectivity to the radio access networks (RAN) made up of the 4G/LTE broadband networks in the various states. There will be a backhaul network connecting the RAN networks to the core, and PSAP connectivity via broadband local services

This past week I had an opportunity to present to a group of individuals in Traverse City Michigan. The event was set up by Lori Luegers with TeleComp Solutions, Inc. who aids municipalities and educational institutions with E-rate grants. The session was attended by users from the Traverse City area, as well as people from downstate, and we were fortunate enough to be hosted by the Grand Traverse County 911 Central Dispatch.

Where the NENA MLTS committee stopped, didn't take into consideration the implementation side of the network. While some carriers make this task a simple one to implement, others do not, and costly additional services are required to be activated in order to pass any station specific phone number to the PSAP.

The immediate question was "How could this happen?" The initial suspect being the new VoIP system installed last December by Broadvox. or the VPC provider providing E911 connectivity. As usual, the press sees "E911 failure" and "Voice over IP" in the same sentence, and they immediately draw the conclusion that the two technologies are related and at fault of the problem. Even Manhattan Police Chief Howard Martin responded, "it had nothing to do with us, it was a problem at the school."
