This week, host Eamon spoke to Lisa Smith, a veteran from the United States Air Force and Councilmember At-Large for Arvada, Colorado, with a focus on housing and multi-modal transportation, who graduated from the Boston College School of Social Work in 2018. Lisa recently spent two weeks helping Ukrainian refugees evacuate into Poland to escape the ongoing war with Russia.

This week, host Eamon interviewed Dr. Bob Keane, an assistant vice president at Walden Behavioral Care serving as a part-time faculty member of the Boston College School of Social Work, and Kameron Mendes, the clinical director of inpatient units at Walden Behavioral Care and licensed mental health counselor. Dr. Keane and Mr. Mendes recently co-authored an article outlining the importance of adolescents limiting social media usage and shifting their perception of happiness, which was published in the Boston Globe. 

In this episode, Dr. Keane and Mr. Mendes discuss the rising uptake of social media use in adolescents, citing the increase of isolation and remote learning amid the global pandemic as its cause, and how social media users must pursue “contentment” rather than fabricated levels of happiness that they see projected online.

This week, host Eamon interviewed Dr. Emrah Altindis, an assistant professor of biology at Boston College. Professor Altindis specializes in research about microbe replication of human proteins, including human hormones, and how such replications affect a variety of human diseases. Dr. Altindis' recent publication concluded that a gut microbe may contribute to developing type 1 diabetes.

In this episode, Dr. Altindis discusses the effects of the microbe “parabacteroides distasonis” and its relationship with type 1 diabetes, his experiences testing the microbe in clinical trials, and the increasing rate of type 1 diabetes diagnoses in the future.

This week, host Eamon interviewed Dr. Theodore Papageorgiou, the Felter Family Associate Professor of Economics at Boston College. Dr. Papageorgiou specializes his research in labor economics, macroeconomics, and economics of transportation, and his article published in March, 2020, titled “Geography, Transportation, and Endogenous Trade Costs” was awarded the Frisch Medal of the Econometric Society for the best applied paper published in the Econometrica. 

In this episode, Dr. Papageorgiou discusses the overlooked economic importance of the trade sector, his process of modeling the efficiency of bulk ships in the global market, the factors that cause countries to be mass net exporters and importers, and even the possibility for an “Uber-like” app for freight shipping.

This week, hosts Eamon and Seeun interviewed Professor Gregg Sparkman. Dr. Sparkman specializes in research on the psychology of social change, including research on interventions to address social problems related to the environment, health, and social inequity. He recently co-published an article in which he found that Americans’ support of climate change is widely underestimated across the country, with around 80-90% of Americans underestimating the concern their fellow Americans have for support of transformative mitigation policies.
