It was on this day in 1994 that the first democratic elections took place in South Africa. It was the first post-apartheid national election to be held in South Africa where anyone could vote regardless of race and gender.

As a country, we've made remarkable progress since 1994 but some argue that we still have a long way to go in terms of being "free".  The other pandemic in the country is that of GBV. Does the celebration of freedom apply to South African women?

Africa is joined by Paseka Letsatsi, Spokesperson for the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to talk about the reapplication of the R350 social relief of distress grants. 

 

The Department of Social Development has now said that those who have benefited from the R350 social relief of distress grant need to re-apply.

This comes after the lifting of the National State of Disaster earlier this month. The grant is set to be constructed under a new legislative framework.

 

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced during his state of the nation address earlier this month that the grant will be extended for another year from April 2022 to March 2023

Africa is joined by Professor Sethulego Matebesi, Political Analyst at the University of the Free State (UFS) to reflect on the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) calling for a special meeting on Sunday regarding discussions around the last-minute logistics of the upcoming policy conference that is scheduled to take place later this year.

Some of those policies will include changes to the land expropriation bill.

The Sunday Times reported that the ANC wants farmers to donate land for redistribution to emerging black farmers as part of a significant shift in land expropriation policy.

The sudden change in the policy comes after the ANC failed to secure sufficient backing from the opposition to amend the Constitution.
