Remote Area Medical is coming back to Tennessee at the end of the month. They have clinics coming up in Jefferson County and Fentress County. But, they need volunteer dentists, eye doctors, and more. Girls can now join the Boy Scouts! The Great Smoky Mountain Council will be out recruiting kids for the 21 counties it represents. Executive Director, David Williams of the SMC of the BSOA along with Scout Master Kelli Edds from Troop 508 join Michele Silva in the studio to talk about how the organization  made this move to accommodate today’s families.

It is July – but the Emerald Youth Foundation is getting

ready for Christmas. The organization is starting their Christmas in July

campaign from July 23,-27, 2018.  now.. collecting gifts and donations for the Emerald youth Christmas

store in December. John Crooks, of the EYF says the Christmas store allows parents to shop and purchase gifts at a discount price and therefore, be able to make their children's holiday extra special. Emeraldyouth.org/Christmas.

The Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley recently took in 71 cats when the Cumberland County Humane Society was dealing with air conditioning problems. Teresa Underwood, the Marketing and Development Director explains the shelters needs for the cats as well as the other pets up for adoption. You can repel 16 stories from a building in Knoxville, safely and to benefit the Restoration House of Knoxville. It's the 4th year for raising money for the village that helps single mothers and their children get back on their feet. This year on August 25th, participants will take on a taller building than last year's 12 stories of brick and mortar. Daniel Watson, Executive Director shares more on this thrilling event, along with a single mom who graduated from the Restoration House program and is going Over the Edge for others! 

If you have kids, you have three chances to get a free ID kit for them. Shoney’s Restaurants KidCare Photo ID events will take

place in August, in partnership with

the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

The events provide FREE KidCare Photo IDs for children, which enable parents to have

information readily available for authorities in the event their child is ever reported missing. The

IDs include a color photograph; fingerprints; important information such as: height, weight, and

date of birth; a medical profile; the “Seven Rules for Safety;” and a 24-hour NCMEC hotline

number.

This week's "East Tennessee Now" is all about the kiddos, starting with the Burger Bash to benefit East Tennessee Children's Hospital. World's Fair Park in Downtown Knoxville is the place to be on August 11, 2018. From 11-4, you can make your way around the park and sample sliders... as dozens of teams compete for your vote! Seth Linkous, Communications Director for ETCH explains how the money generated from $10 ticket sales and the team entries will provide alternative treatment options for the hospital's little patients. Some of those treatments include essential oils to relieve pain, as well as massage therapy for pain management.

Yes it is the summer, but for the Emerald Youth Foundation, it's almost Christmas in July! The organization is running this campaign to get a kick start on Christmas, so city kids will have an extra special holiday when it does roll around. They are collecting new gifts to stock Emerald's Christmas Store where parents shop for deep discounts. It helps families provide Christmas for their children and teens. "Bridge the Gap" is a fund set up to help seniors at a non profit assisted living community, (Renaissance Terrace) who may not be able to make their monthly payments. Carrie Jordan, the Marketing Director and Melody Jones, Community Relations Liason explains how this subsidy will help people find their way to receiving the community and care they need.

 On June 30th and July 1st, people in Tennessee can get free health care... including dental, vision, and medical at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Thanks to Remote Area Medical. Dr. Chris Sawyer, the Medical Director on the board for RAM and  Richard Lambert,  the Public Relations Director for the organization, explain the quality of care patients receive when Remote Area Medical sets up their clinics all over the world.

A sell out competition is coming to Bridgewater Event Center

in Knoxville from 6:30-9pm on June 22, 2018. Trivia night puts doctors

against lawyers, answering trivia

questions. Money raised from table sales goes to Interfaith Health Clinic which

provides care for the working poor. Missy Standifer, public releations and

marketing specialist explains how to get involved and how to get care through

the clinic.

Volunteer drivers are needed for the Volunteer Assisted

Transportation program in Knox County. Volunteers will utilize agency-owned

hybrid sedans while accompanying seniors or persons with disabilities to

appointments, shopping, and other errands. Program manager, Nancy Welch tells

us about the guidelines and requirements as well as what training is provided.

Smoke detectors save lives, 24/7. But, only if they are working! Maryville Fire's Administrative Chief, Mike Caylor tells us you need to check them more often than twice a year. He also explains where smoke detectors should be placed in our homes and how many need to be installed. Plus, the chief shares a program that provides the smoke alarms and installs them for you!

Get Off Your Glass... and recycle! Sierra Nevada and Keep Knoxvilel Beautiful is making it fun and easy with an event on Wednesday from 5-8 at Hops and Hollers in Knoxville. Bring your glass bottles, baby food and pickle jars, etc, drop them in the bins provided and keep them out of the landfills.
