It’s not an exhaustive list, but there seem to be three predominant groups in the evangelical Western American church: prize fighters, secret agents, and ambassadors. Peter’s letter helps us see how we might reflect and respond to the group we see ourselves in while considering persecution as followers of Jesus.

A batting average over .300 is respectable in the game of baseball, but when it comes to 1 in 3 Christian marriages ending in divorce, we can do better. This week in Peter’s letter, we’ll see how our identity in Christ impacts our understanding of marriage. When Peter says submit, what does he mean?

Where does our citizenship lie? How do we submit when we don't agree? How can we embrace suffering? These are big questions, and thankfully, God has given us guidance on how to answer them in 1 Peter. Spoiler alert: We need Jesus!

How is it possible to love Jesus while being unloving? To identify with Jesus and deny Jesus?  To be a united people in Jesus but live like a divided people? This can happen in any believer who stops trusting Jesus and instead looks to something else for significance, security, or satisfaction. 

Today, we begin a new study through 1 Peter. His letter addresses suffering through the lens of our identity. Some work for their identity, but as followers of Christ, we work from who we are in Christ. The difference is a matter of standing firm in true grace.

We've learned anything we believe or respect about Jesus from a group of antiheroes called the disciples. These followers gave their lives for a message of hope in death. Today, many claim something good about Jesus, but few claim the resurrected Christ because of what that means for the rest of their lives. If we are going to bank on anything about Jesus, why not the most important thing?
