Verse 12 begins with "But before all this...", making a delineation between what came before and what is coming after. The verses after 12 are all about the destruction of Jerusalem and the days leading up to that in AD 70. What does the disciple need to know?

Jesus condemns the pretentiousness of the scribes and their devouring of widows' homes just in time to look up and see a poor widow putting her last coins into the offering coffers. This leads him to speak even further regarding the outward adornments of the temple itself and their temporary existence. Lesson: Don't judge by what's on the outside!
