The story of Elijah's ascension ends with a curious account of 50 men searching for his body for 3 days, yet without success. A Jesus prophecy? Next Elisha cleanses bitter water, reminding us of Moses. Finally, wild beasts come out of the woods and maul 42 young men - a story that should not take the reader by surprise in the same way that it has often done.

Elijah is being taken by God as his time in this life comes to a close. Elisha will get to see it happen. Several occurances throughout this passage give us a glimpse into Jesus' final time with His disciples.

Ahaziah's life ends without fanfare as he tries to seek wisdom from a foreign god. YHWH's prophet, Elijah, pronounces his certain death and no show of force will hinder the Lord's will from being done.

Ahab, King of Israel, goes out to battle even though the prophet of YHWH has clearly stated it will result in his death. As predicted he dies even though he disgueses himself in order to hide from God's judgement. His death fulfills YHWH's word and his son Ahaziah begins to reign in his place. Meanwhile, Jehoshaphat reigns in Judah with a primarily good track record.

The final chapter of first Kings comes into focus with an alliance between North & South Israel, between Ahab & Jehoshaphat. They have agreed to go to war together against Syria. However, although Jehoshaphat is keen on hearing a word from YHWH about the battles' outcome Ahab is reluctant. The reader is given a view into the "heavenly boardroom" as YHWH's Divine Council helps plan Ahab's ultimate demise.
