Eclectic Soul

Five women singing in this show, five beautiful voices filled with love vibrations.

One of them is a wonderful gifted girl I hosted recently – one of these encounter that

inspires me and convinces me (in case it was still needed) that I’m on the right track when I’m vagabonding, writing, making music.

That’s what my life is about now.

This week I’ll be visiting my friend Barnaby Carter in Bristol.

On the way back I’ll probably stop in Brussels, like last year pretty much at the same time, to meet 72 Soul aka Pierre Citron,

and maybe do a featuring. Then I’ll be traveling around my homeland Italy in April.

After a stop in Geneva, I’ll finally take the road to the west coast of Europe, travel through France and Spain,

before reaching Portugal and find a place to settle for a while near Lisbon, or maybe more South, by the ocean.

New movie samples taken from Youth (Paolo Sorrentino, 2015).

Starting up with a beautiful slam from Saul Williams, into one of my favorite hip hop tune,

discovered few years ago in the Ninja Tune XX Box Set.

This label, and specially this special release celebrating 20 years “of beats and pieces”,

opened me up to a whole new universe where I found myself unable to name which genre I was listening to.

This had a huge impact on my musical journey.

Sometimes people ask “what kind of music do you play ?” I remember saying “I’m quite eclectic.

I play soulful music”.

That doesn’t say much to most people, but I think this is what all DJs should be about – playing all kind of “feel good” music,

with soul, coming from the heart.

It’s our role to spread the love through music and attitude (like being ourselves, smiling, enjoying the moment).

Talk: Lubomyr Melnyk (Ukrainian pianist)

Picture : YuriFineart

Two great records I listened a lot in December:

St. Germain - St. Germain

Contact Field Orchestra - Mapping The Futures Gone By (3 tracks featured in the show)

Don’t miss Fredfades & Ivan Ave’s LP too.

I watched A Scanner Darkly and discovered the beautiful album from Thom Yorke, The Eraser.

The movie features also Radiohead’s songs as well as a Four Tet’s remix.

More reasons to love Linklater’s work (who directed that movie).

With all the music I listened to in my life and the nice collection I’m curating,

I want to do the music supervisor for movies and some kind of media projects.

Looking forward to work on something like this soon.

Doing Eclectic Soul is helping me in that direction.

I’m also willing to do compose some music for a movie. We’ll see what the future holds!

"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action,

and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.

And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost."

– Martha Graham

Well, four months without Eclectic Soul.

Apparently it’s unhealthy for me.

Got sidetracked by thoughts, desires, fears, dreams and family.

Anyway, I’m back, listening to amazing old and new music, and there are already some gems in the playlist for the next show.

Also getting back into music making along learning guitar since two months now.

J'ai compris qu'on cherchant la solitude

Je retrouve un peu de liberté

– JeanJass (Mes jambes)

Haven’t been listening to much music these last months,

which had the (maybe) obvious consequence to delay the creation of this new selection.

To be honest, I was even thinking to stop.

How could I go on if I don’t spend much time listening to music?

I’m in a moment in my life where I ask myself many questions.

I have many desires, many dreams, many potential projects in mind that I start partly before getting distracted by another idea,

so I tend to feel a bit lost at times, not knowing where to put my attention.

I know I won’t be able to do everything and sometimes it’s frustrating to feel I must make a choice.

Then really, it’s just about doing something as long as I enjoy doing it.

I’m not sure if I’m loosing enthusiasm with this or if it was just because of a moment of confusion.

It’s weird sometimes to do all these things online,

sharing with people we don’t know all over the world, we may never meet and still, somehow we have an impact on each other.

You’re invited to the very first Eclectic Soul Live Session at Bravo Bar in Brussels on Saturday 11th April!

I’m co-organising this event with 72 Soul and we’re inviting JeanJass from Charleroi,

who’s going to perform alongside his friends on the trumpet, guitar and decks.

I’ll be in Belgium until April 15 at least and maybe moving around in England and Northern France.

Let me know if you want to meet !

We could set up an intimate event at your place or garder or whatever location you might think of.

Still honouring French hip hop with "Claude le magnifique" aka MC Solaar who was a pioneer in the 90s and is apparently working on a new album.

He's a huge inspiration to me.

France is also well represented with five tracks from Guts in this show.

I'm reading Walden at the moment.

Funny how deep I feel connected to monsieur Thoreau.

I'm developing a similar philosophy and way to live, though I'm not living in a cabine in the wood yet.

I would love to build my own house, away from modernity.

I would love to learn to work the wood.

I found a guy who teaches how to make your own guitar.

I'll start with that.

More and more French rap on the podcast, this time we got Exodarap crew from Charleroi, Belgium.

They're musician too, so you hear their own instrument recordings like trumpet on their jazzy instrumentals.

Then there's Oxmo Puccino and Hocus Pocus from France as well as Basengo, my favourite rapper from Geneva.

2014 is full of amazing music.

Good thing I started to publish a mix per week.

It's even a bit frustrating at times to know there's so much goodness to listen to.

Choosing what to listen to becomes an important decision.

And listening to all these good things inspires too.

So I want to take the time to make more music.

It's necessary to drastically reduce the time of consumption to make more time for creation.

I mean, I actually start to feel a strong need to create.

To write thoughts and share experiences and knowledge, write rap, to make music, to draw, to make films…

The thing I love about this, as the intro quote points out, is that I don't want,

don't feel the need to get more information.

I just want to make things.

What's in my head and on paper – make it real.

In this 25th show, I'm happy to introduce you some more French hip hop,

from Canada with Alaclair Ensemble (with the english singing canadian MoDLee, who sounds just like Erykah Badu)

and Belgium represented by 72 Soul aka Pierre Citron and JeanJass.

Check out 72 Soul mixes on Mixcloud and everything he composes as 72 Soul and Pierre Citron on Bandcamp.

I'll certainly play more from him in the future.

It's one of these artist you stumble on and something resonates in you.

Doesn't happen often to me, but when it does, I know it will have somekind of impact on my life.
