I conceived my fourth child in early 2020 - and we all know what happened in 2020… I very quickly decided I would have nothing to do with a hospital for that birth. My midwife closed shop and I was unable to find anyone else who was willing to take me on. So, I decided to have a “free birth.”  Actually, I prefer the term autonomous birth. 

Autonomous birth is the act of birthing without the authoritative oversight of doctors, state-governed midwives or medical professionals. It's about birthing in your own power and choices, with support coming from companions of your choosing.

I sat down with Nick Tvrdy for a super fun chat about ecstatic dance, somatic healing, parts work, trauma informed yoga and much more in this week’s podcast. We laughed a lot, dumped some trauma, experienced multiple technical difficulties and shared our mutual experience and participation in a door to door sales cult! Nick's bio:

Nick has spent most of his adult life in some form of door to door sales, forcing him to develop a quick wit and charisma (if only as a coping mechanism in the face of rejection). As he grew older, he slowly became despondent and worn out over time. He realized that he developed a habit of glossing over traumas both from work and from family life. Beyond numbness and deflecting pain with humor, he defaulted like many of us do to substance use and isolation as the easiest way to cope with life's struggles. 

In 2022, he discovered Somatic Healing and Parts Work as forms of trauma informed recovery and has since used these modalities to become sober and enact healthier coping mechanisms that ultimately lead to his ecstatic life. 

His part time passion is being a yoga teacher in Gainesville, teaching twice a week, while he works full time as a sales manager for a solar company, EnLight.Energy. His degree in Sustainable Energy from Creighton University brings a philosophical and even theological lens into how one can best view their unique place in the cosmos 🌌
