Professional and amateur athletes exercising their First Amendment rights, and showing support for social causes, in large part the rising tide of violence against African-Americans. It has caused people in droves to swear they will never again watch a sport, support a University's athletic effort, or spend another nickel in tickets. It has also boiled up plenty of hate toward the athletes, much of it racially based.

John Elway will always be known for more than passing yards and Super Bowls. He was the first player out of college who had the audacity to not only turn down the most powerful franchise in Major League Baseball, the NY Yankees, but to be so brazen as to tell the might NFL where he would and would not play! Elway became the face of a franchise, the sporting soul of an entire State, and a legendary football Hall of Famer.

It seems no matter where you turn, there is a level of fierce anger at professional athletes for taking a social justice stand and delaying a few games. The NBA, NHL, MLB, WNBA and MLS all decided making a point about violence in America at the moment was more important than a mere game. For that, they are in many corners being excoriated. WHY?

High schools are opening, sometimes closing, just as quickly, and colleges are planning also on fall sports. All this while COVID19 cases continue to roll up frightening numbers. Is anyone actually listening to the warnings?

At the moment, there will be both college football and high school football, along with other sports, played in America despite the still-growing COVID-19 pandemic. Medical experts are pleading with administrators, athletic directors and those in charge to think extremely hard about their choices.

One thing has become evident in the summer of COVID19: there is no more powerful athlete than the college football player. Led by the Pac-12 and Big 10, the game has been turned on its head and will never be the same. Players are now dictating to conferences, and next up is the money play.

Finally, there appears to be some common sense from certain high school associations to save their athletes from any dangers of COVID19. At the same time, plenty of parents are falling for the fraud of football camps that will do NOTHING to get their kids into college, and they are completely failing to consider who is going to pay the extra cash for their kids to play in ANY sport.

Try as they might, the sport of boxing is unable to stop COVID19 from impacting their sport. Veteran promoter Bob Arum would seem to be the only person smart enough, and with enough pull and cash, to keep fighters and those around them from contracting the disease.

The summer of COVID19 has been a financial tsunami for so many businesses, but perhaps none more so affected than non-profit organizations and charities. Depending so heavily on donors and sponsors, all of whom have felt the financial pinch.
