This conversation with David Klieger, Senior Research Scientist in the Center for Educational and Career Development at the Educational Training Service (ETS) and Daniel B. Rodriguez, the Harold Washington Professor and Dean Emeritus at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, and Chair of the newly created Legal Education Advisory Committee at ETS, explores the history of law schools utilizing the GRE in addition to the LSAT and provides insight into why schools might consider including the GRE following the ABA's recent decision for widespread acceptance of either admission test.  They discuss ETS' partnership with the University of Arizona Law School on JD-Next for aspirants or accepted law students to be exposed to what law study might be like or to prepare them for that study, and the PSQ initiative that is under development and which will assess 14 different soft skill areas and composites. Dr. Klieger and Dean Rodriguez go on to discuss ways that ETS is focused on the advancement of innovation and diversity, equity, and inclusion in legal education, and they both opine on the future of legal education.

Learn more about Theresa M. Beiner, first permanent female dean and the Nadine Baum Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, William H. Bowen School of Law, where she has spent her career in the legal academy since 1994. Following roles that included the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for Faculty Development, Dean Beiner assumed the top spot on July 1, 2018. The Bowen School of Law enrolls about 70% of its students from Arkansas and boasts a Rural Practice Incubator to aid those who want to go back to their rural hometowns to practice law. Dean Beiner discusses the new Center for Racial Justice and Criminal Justice Reform that is in development, and that includes a comprehensive court watching program with funding from Walmart. Bowen School of Law focuses on access to justice, professionalism, and public service, the latter being an extremely significant part of the ethos of the school. The required live client experiences through their 7 clinics and other experiential learning opportunities underscore that ethos, and they offer the opportunity for students to enroll in a number of concurrent degree programs, including the popular Masters in Public Service at the UA Clinton School of Public Service. Dean Beiner shares her enthusiasm about their Business Bootcamp and their partnership with the National Center for State Courts, and opines about the future of legal education.

Rooksby, Dean of Gonzaga University School of Law since 2018, and his colleague Gail Hammer, Associate Professor of Law and Coordinating Attorney in their Clinical Legal Programs, where we discuss the innovative programs at this Catholic law school in Spokane, Washington, a city located inland in the Pacific Northwest. Dean Rooksby also serves as President of the Gonzaga Law School Foundation, and is a Professor of Law and Leadership Studies, and an IP Optimization Strategist, which keeps him connected to the practice of law and the evolving area of intellectual property. A champion of diversity, Dean Rooksby is proud that Gonzaga is the first Catholic law school in the country to have an LGBTQ+ rights legal clinic, which Professor Hammer directs. Dean Rooksby also discussed the unique opportunity for law students to obtain a legal and business certificate from the Gonzaga University Wine Institute.

Professor Hammer joined us from her home, with her parrot, Coco, chiming in on occasion. She has directed a number of clinics at Gonzaga, including the Indian Law clinic, General Practice, and Domestic Violence clinics, and now leads the Lincoln LGBTQ+ Rights Clinic of the Center for Civil Human Rights and teaches litigation and children's law classes. She and her students assist members of the LGBTQ+ community with direct representation, and also aid in policy work. The relatively new clinic has been fully subscribed to by students and welcomed by the community on and off campus. 

We conclude with Dean Rooksby and Professor Hammer sharing their predictions for the future of legal education.

Join us for a conversation with Matthew R. Lyon, Vice President and Dean of the Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law, a position he started in July 2020. Dean Lyon is the fourth dean of the young Knoxville, Tennessee law school that opened in 2009 at Lincoln Memorial University, which was established in 1897 and named for President Abraham Lincoln. Prior to being named Dean, he served as Associate Dean for Academic Programs and oversaw their successful efforts to obtain full approval from the American Bar Association. Dean Lyon shares that Duncan School of Law serves largely the Southern Appalachia Region, and is proud of its student-centered focus and affordable education for many students traditionally underrepresented in the profession, graduates who go on to serve the underserved. Duncan School of Law offers a robust externship program and opportunities for students to learn in local law firms. Dean Lyon opines about the future of legal education and his hope that law schools move beyond the traditional and lockstep model currently available, to more flexible delivery models and training for future attorneys, including limited license opportunities.

Professor Heidi K. Brown joined us for her episode during her sabbatical year from Brooklyn Law School, where she is Director of Legal Writing and Professor of Law. Professor Brown shares her path from boutique litigation practice and brief writer to author and legal educator. She has published four books on predictive and persuasive legal writing and federal litigation and has written two books that help law students and attorneys "find their authentic lawyer voices" and overcome anxiety. A self-proclaimed introvert, her books include The Introverted Lawyer: A Seven-Step Journey Toward Authentically Empowered Advocacy and Untangling Fear in Layering: A Four-Step Journey Toward Powerful Advocacy. Professor Brown is an avid traveler and included on the Fulbright Specialist Roster. She studies Italian, has taught in Italy, and was awarded a Global Legal Skills Award in Verona, Italy. When she's not working on her Italian, she is often attending concerts of U2, whom she has seen 20 times, and we discuss the lithograph of Bono lyrics she has in her apartment. Every time I hear a U2 song now, Professor Brown comes to mind! Professor Brown regularly works with a trainer in boxing and finds that boxing lessons often inform her work. Her latest book, The Flourishing Lawyer, will be out next.

Dean Baynes has been described as a "champion for diversity" and is the recent recipient of the 2022 AALS Clyde Ferguson Award. He was named one of the nation's top 100 most influential lawyers of color, named to the Lawyers of Color Power List, and has received several other awards for his innovative and impactful work on diversity. Dean Baynes initiated the award-winning Pre-Law Pipeline Program at the University of Houston Law Center, which creates more opportunities for first-generation, economically challenged, and under-represented college students considering law school. 

Dean Baynes discusses his law school's upcoming move into the brand-new John M. O'Quinn Law Building and the Black Lawyers Matter Conference that his law school initiated in partnership with SMU Dedman School of Law in 2020, an event that is now held annually and attended by more than 1,000 participants. U of H Law Center also debuted the Aspiring Lawyer Magazine this year, aimed at assisting underrepresented individuals who are considering law school navigate the application process.

Our guest for this episode is Howard Katz, who is Cleveland-Marshall College of Law's first Legal Educator-in-Residence, a position in which he advises the Dean, faculty, and staff on best practices in admissions, academic support, bar passage, curriculum, and pedagogy; he was also a former visiting professor at Cleveland-Marshall for several years. Professor Katz has served in a variety of academic and administrative leadership positions at a number of law schools, including the law schools at Duquesne University and Elon University. Professor Katz co-authored (with Kevin Francis O’Neill) Strategies and Techniques of Law School Teaching, which formed the foundation for a series of subject-matter teaching advice for law professors. He regularly participates in the annual Leading Edge conference convened by Wolters Kluwer and serves as a member of the executive committee of the New Teachers section of the AALS.

Professor Katz discusses the resources available for new law teachers and includes advice for them in developing a strategy that demonstrates care for students while also effectively teaching the material. He is passionate about helping new professors, and improving the curriculum and the law school experience through enrichment of early skills and technology teaching, and improved student advising. Professor Katz opines about the future of legal education and the profession, and the need to narrow the gap of available legal services between those who can afford them, and those who cannot.
