    Welcome back to America's leading higher education law podcast, EdUp Legal - part of the EdUp Experience Podcast Network! In this episode, we hear from Meera E. Deo, Professor of Law at Southwestern Law School, Los Angeles.

    Professor Meera E. Deo, J.D., Ph.D., from Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles, is a national expert on legal education, racial representation, diversity, equity and inclusion, and also serves as the Director of the Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE) based at Indiana University-Bloomington. Professor Deo discusses the results of the research for her book, Unequal Profession: Race and Gender in Legal Academia, which examines how race and gender affect faculty and student interactions, as well as tenure/promotion, institutional support and work/life balance. Professor Deo shares her recent work building on her initial studies, research that explores the negative impact that COVID-19 has had on the legal academy, including the disproportionate challenges faced by women and faculty of color. In her role as Director of the LSSSE, she gives a preview of the troubling results forthcoming in this year's annual survey, one that is uniquely poised to provide insight into the experiences of COVID-19 law students. Professor Deo concludes with her opinions regarding what the future of legal education is likely to be, and what it should aspire to be.

    Hari M. Osofsky is the Dean and Myra James Bradwell Professor of Law at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, and Professor of Environmental Policy and Culture at the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, positions she has held since summer 2021. Prior to that, she was dean at Penn State Law and Penn State School of International Affairs, serving as a Distinguished Professor of Law, and Professor of International Affairs and of Geography during her four-year tenure at Penn State. Dean Osofsky discusses her reasons for becoming a lawyer and a dean, and for her recent switch to Northwestern during the continuing pandemic. She shares her deep commitment to issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social and racial justice, and the numerous roles she has played in advancing collaborative projects across universities and law schools that can address those issues on a systemic level. Dean Osofsky describes her leadership style, the efforts that have aided in keeping a sense of community and gratitude at two different law schools, and her exploration of the intersection of law and technology and how it might address access to justice. She concludes with her expectations for the evolution of legal education in the coming decade.

    Join us as Deborah Jones Merritt, Distinguished Professor of Law Emerita, at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, discusses her unusual path to clerking with two historic and iconic justices, Judge (later Justice) Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court, and select lessons learned from each. Professor Merritt discusses her nationwide empirical study with colleagues at the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS) that resulted in Building a Better Bar, funded by AccessLex. The study convened 50 focus groups of legal professionals, educators and students across the country in an attempt to identify the skills needed for practice, and what should be measured to determine entry to the Bar. Professor Merritt opines on the value of clinical education as a measure of readiness to be a member of the Bar, and recounts her own impactful experiences as a doctrinal faculty member supervising a criminal defense and prosecutorial clinic, respectively. Those experiences, the study, her scholarship, and work with the ABA's Commission on the Future of Legal Education make her an ideal guest to share predictions on the future of legal education, what it will be, and what it should be.
