  • Supercharge 21st Century Students - Prepare Students for a Lifetime of Collaboration, Problem Solving, and Critical Thinking

This edWeb podcast is sponsored by Breakout EDU.
The webinar recording can be accessed here.

Educators are eager to create 21st-century skilled, self-directed learners—but what needs to be in place for that to be successful? How can educators move from classroom learning that is unconnected from students’ lived experiences and create opportunities for students to use their skills and knowledge to lead their learning?

In this edWeb podcast, educator and researcher Julie Stern and edtech expert and educator Maria Arfanakis discusses how schools can shift their focus from teaching to the standards to teaching for learning transfer. The presenters share more about what learning transfer is and how educators can use it to design equitable learning experiences that are meaningful and engaging. Educators learn how the right instructional moves, such as discussion-focused collaborative games, create a perfect conduit to harness students’ prior learning and experiences, move students toward expertise, and improve students’ social-emotional learning.

The conversation addresses the practical steps educators can take to move from a teacher-controlled to a student-led classroom, how leaders can encourage their staff to prioritize the instructional behaviors that maximize student learning while preparing students to tackle the complex challenges in their careers, and how centralizing learning transfer has the power to transform schools into vibrant laboratories of learning and problem solving.

This edWeb podcast is hosted by AASA, The School Superintendents Association.
The webinar recording can be accessed here.

On April 8th, AASA released An American Imperative: A New Vision of Public Schools. This set of recommendations from an AASA Learning 2025 National Commission presents a series of connected, essential recommendations which will shape American education. Please join Co-Chairs Dr. Bill Daggett and Dr. Daniel A. Domenech as they share the commission’s call for holistic redesign of the public school system by 2025. Learning 2025: Student-Centered, Equity-Focused Education is an AASA initiative grounded in the foundational work of the AASA Learning 2025 National Commission, comprised of thought leaders in education, business, community, and philanthropy.

The time for action is now. Schools must operate as the heartbeat of the country we want and believe in—a country where freedom, justice, and opportunity are extended to everyone, without question, qualification or exception. The recent pandemic has given us an opportunity to finally reshape schools to meet ALL whole learner needs for maximized achievement. We’re calling on educators to seize this opportunity to realize the vision of holistic school redesign.

Dr. Daggett and Dr. Domenech discuss AASA Learning 2025 National Commission’s core components and corresponding essential areas of systemic school redesign. As leaders, teachers, and students work to realize this vision, all must play an active role in redesigning systems, reengineering instruction, and co-authoring the learning journey.

  • 5 Steps for Building and Strengthening Students’ Relationships

This edWeb podcast is sponsored by The Christensen Institute.
The webinar recording can be accessed here.

Like discoveries washed ashore after a turbulent hurricane, the pandemic has exposed like never before both the importance of students’ social and emotional well-being and their need to equitably access supports in order for them to thrive socially and academically. This edWeb podcast reveals strategies that build and strengthen students’ relationships to help ensure schools not only come back, but come back better in serving every student.

On May 4th, the Christensen Institute released a free, five-step playbook that distills decades of social capital research and cutting-edge practices from the field into a customizable roadmap that any K–12 or postsecondary leader can use to begin implementing the tools, metrics, and designs needed to ensure every student’s well-being and access to opportunity.

edWeb podcast listeners understand not only the importance of students’ relationships to their personal, academic, and career success, but also how to incorporate intentional designs that reimagine students’ relationships as tangible outcomes to learning that far outlast one-time interventions. They also discover strategies that help adults who work with young people become both intentional and inclusive in building developmental relationships with all youth. They are introduced to the tools and tactics that could be implemented in standalone programming or courses. However, we encourage listeners to treat relationship building as a system-wide goal, rather than a one-off effort reserved for only a few students.

This edWeb podcast is of interest to K-12 and postsecondary leaders, defined as any innovative practitioner spearheading initiatives on behalf of students.

  • More Than Just a Buzzword - Embedding “Equity-Mindedness” for Concrete Change

This edWeb podcast is sponsored by Scholastic Digital Solutions.
The edLeader Panel recording can be accessed here.

Research has demonstrated that school policy, teacher pedagogies, and educational leadership are directly impacted by broader societal issues. Over a year since its emergence, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to highlight ongoing inequities through its disproportionate impact on communities of color. This has coincided with the rise in frequency of racial violence, most recently targeting Black and Asian communities within the United States.

Put plainly, our communities are enduring multiple crises. It is therefore critical that educational leaders at every level are equipped to address the ways these crises manifest (and have manifested) within K-12 educational settings, in order to define and create a “new normal” rooted in equity-mindedness. This moment calls all educators to reconstruct learning to meet children where they are, and ultimately guide them towards a brighter, equitable future.

    In this edWeb podcast, listeners:
Learn what equity-mindedness means as a way of thinking, working, and living
Concretize recurring conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion that impact our youth
Reflect on “norms” within our schools that are inequitable by design
Devise ways to create more equitable norms and strategies moving forward.

This edWeb podcast is of interest to teachers, librarians, and school and district leaders of the kindergarten through middle school levels.
